Sony is planning on releasing a firmware update later this year for the PS3 to make the console 3D compatible. Only time will tell if this technology will become the next big thing or become a forgotten gimmick.
3D is no gimmick. Playing through Flower, I was always having trouble judging my distance away from a particular target. There's no camera controls, so there's no way to rotate around the flower petals to feel out your surroundings like you can in a platformer like Ratchet and Clank/Mario Galaxy. 3D gives you the knowledge of depth to help you make better decisions that directly affect your gameplay performance.
Well, it's on PS3 so of course it's a "gimmick". If any other console spearheaded this it would be the second coming...
