The situation he describes is not something to take lightly. Mike Fahey should be ashamed of himself for using this mans situation and the deaths of his bodyguards to get hits for his site, to get a laugh, and as flame bait against Sony and Playstation or even as a console article at all.

I didn't read it as him making a joke but merely pointing out a discrepency between the guy's treatrment and the supposed teachings of Islam, no? The "one" I think referred to whether this guy was a prisoner of war and not whether a PS represents torture, no?

That said, Kotaku need a slap down(figuratively) for this kind of insensitive idiocy, imo. Also us westerners with little understanding of Muslim culture and the different ways the Koran can be interpreted by leaders of different Islamic sects should look at the way oour mainly Christian nations manage to have people reading the bible and coming up with totally different ideas about what it contains-these are books of ancient teachings and if read literally full of contradictions. that's exactly why we have a lot of the trouble with religion AND people getting the wrong idea about theology and what the tenets/boundaries of other religious orders can be.

It would serve us well to remember, also, that religious extremists causing havoc and distruction and acts of terror don't need to be Islamic by any means and every religion has had it's zealots following hard line expansionist policies before-and with similarly nasty results to what we've seen recently and with what happened to this guy and his poor associates. Maybe, if we all tried to understand positions that at first look completely indefensible to us we might all be one step closer to avoiding things like what has happened resulting in 9/11 and the subsequent "war on terror".

Kill the ignorance on both sides and the arrogance will follow and maybe even the uncaring idiocy displayed by Kotaku here.

I mean, I realize that this a sensitive issue, and I sympathize, but I find the headline more cute than controversial. Maybe it's just too soon, but it's valid to point out that the last thing you expect to hear when you're told that someone was held captive by islamic terrorists is that they were able to play Playstation. It just seems ironic that they would be so accommodating, especially after they slaughtered his companions and in the midst of constant threats to his life. I wanna know whether the terrorists were playing with him. I mean, how can they assail western values when playing video games, which in a way epitomize indulgence and consumerism. Honestly, it was probably an attempt on their part to cultivate stockholm syndrome, very intriguing.

Another thing about the headline, it's not meant to suggest that Playstation is torture, it's meant to exaggerate the irony of the fact that whereas you might expect him to be made subject to torture, instead he was given something fun to play with.

He was treated "well" (given access to the Playstation etc.) just a few months before he was released. Before that, he was treated VERY badly (he was held for two and a half years). I suspect the scum who did this realised they were going to release him (maybe some deal was going on the background) and they wanted 'good press'.

Nice of Kotaku to give them that 'good press' by making a joke of this and ignoring the murders this group committed.

I can understand if you have a problem with Kotaku, but the article does point out that he was abused for two years before they let up on him. Sure, they're making a joke, but to go from there to implying that they support terrorists is dangerously hyperbolic; you're bordering on mccarthyism there and that's the last thing we need right now. I agree, terrorism is horrible, but so were the holocaust and slavery (I'm gay and black by the way), but every once in a while I hear a good joke and I have a laugh. If you're personal life is wrapped up in it, for someone to make light of these things can really seem like their sticking their thumb in an open wound, but laughter comes from pain; we laugh to over come the pain. I'm sure when he first walked into that room with the TV, Playstation and lap top he probably started cracking up out of joy and relief and the realization of the nigh cosmic irony involved there. And as I pointed out, even this was possibly an attempt on the part of his captors to induce a stockholm syndrome effect, though obviously too little too late. I hope for his sake that he will be able to look back on it and laugh, be happy that he still has his life, and feel like a stronger more resilient person because he did make it through a horrifying experience but can still laugh at some aspects of it. It's the only good thing that could come of the experience. I'd rather that, than that the man feel cursed, crippled and traumatize for the rest of his life, though unfortunately that may be inevitable. All I'm saying to you, though, is lighten up.
