Sessler's Soapbox: A Decade of Gaming

G4TV writes:

"It's the end of the year. The end of a decade. The end of an era. What better time to sit down and look back at what the past decade of gaming has brought into our homes. Such is the subject of the last Soapbox of 2009. Adam sits down to talk about all the games and gaming trends that have come and gone since the year 2000. Some good, some bad, but mostly good. So sit back, press play, and enjoy the nostalgia. Happy New Year!"

I like Sessler. I always think what he says is relevant and truthful. Never really strikes me as a biased kind of guy.

That said, in reflection, its amazing to think how far games have come in ten years. Going from something like Halo in late 2001 to Uncharted 2 in 2009 really makes one wonder how far we'll be along in the next decade. Also, the emergence of gaming as a more accepted mainstream medium will make things interesting too. I just hope gaming as a whole doesn't go the way of the Wii...

I would 2nd that I don't want nor think gaming should go the way of the Wii. Ask anyone who bought a Wii how much they use it. The vast majority of buyers bought the console got a kick out of it for about a week or two and then stopped using it.

I myself have only plugged mine in for Muramasa: The Demon Blade and before that No More Hero's.

Really I don't think this motion control stuff can be anything more then a gimmick. At least with the tech we have now. Until games can be something like the Matrix where you jack in and are unaware that you are playing(which is probably never gonna happen in our life times) old fashioned controllers will be needed. There is no denying that there is just some types of games you could not do with a Natal or a Wii and forcing it would cause a mediocre experience when it could have otherwise been great(Lair is a good example. had the game controlled normally from the get go alot more people would have liked it)

Maybe its just the old school gamer in me, but I thought the 90's where a better gaming decade overall. The leap from Halo 1 to Uncharted 2 was big, but the leap from Super Mario 3 (1990) to Halo 1 was far bigger. That said however, this decade was still pretty freakin' great.
