Ranking the Final Fantasy Series

IGN staff count down the best games in the history of the Japanese RPG tradition.

"If there's one series that completely embodies the charm of the Japanese role-playing game, it's Final Fantasy. This legendary series, which is now more than twenty years old, has grown into a universally recognizable entity, spawning spin-off action games, movies and more. With a heavy emphasis on character-driven stories and elaborate battle systems, it's easy to see why Final Fantasy has such a devoted following."

i've got to agree with this.I agree if i had to rank all of them i would of ranked it the same.I think ff7 was great but it still wasn't as deep as ff6 in story but most people didn't really start playing rpgs until 7 just the old school gamers remember or even played 6.

Personally, I'd rather just say it's a tie. Both games are equally great, but if I HAD to choose one I think I'd go with FFVI.

I agree, I never heard of Final Fantasy until FF VII and I really got hook on the series after that. My favorites of course is FF VII, but I really enjoy the story in FF IX and FF XII. FF XIII looks good, but the media keeps bashing it, but I will see for myself in March.

Marceles3215d ago

You know...I can actually live with the those rankings, good job IGN. The argument between 6 and 7 will always be there, 6 was like Zelda Link to the Past while 7 was like Ocarina of Time. One had the formula while the other one updated it and made the perfect game, but there's no doubt that those 2 were the best in the series.

And 13 is a good game no doubt, at least 100+ hrs of stuff to do in the game. You can either go in a straight line and bash the game for what you've done in a straight line, or you can do the missions and explore and open up stuff in the game you never knew was there.

2. FFIV - AWESOME story of redemption and betrayal. GREAT GREAT MUSIC.
2. FFVII - story was great. Characters were good. Music was UNFORGETTABLE.
3. FFX - although tidus got on my last nerve, he went out like a champ.
4. FFVIII - best limit break of all final fantasy games..... Lionheart

was incredible. I remember playing that game for what seemed like forever and just when I thought I was done Kefka did something that changed the game and I had to play for like another 20 hours. Maybe it's nostalgia, or maybe it's just the fact that FFVI was a great game.

Opera segment in your game FTMFW!

I never beat FF VI and VIII; I got to the final part of the game up to the last boss then died, died, died, died. Then I gave up.

Danja3215d ago

FFIX , remains the best in the series. IMO ... It doesn't get the props it deserves ..

FFX should have been above FFVII ...

mikeslemonade3215d ago

I like this article. It's a good way to get to know what these games were when they were in there prime. Most of us could not experience the games for what they were.

TapiocaMilkTea3215d ago

FF6 was the best one on my list too, maybe SE should consider having a huge cast of characters in future installments.
FF6 was the first final fantasy I played back in the SNES era, so most likely I'm a little biased. I always thought having a huge cast of characters with unique skills was a lot more fun than customizing characters. Sabin was my favorite character, because of the blitz moves. It was pretty challenging, none of the other final fantasies made you execute actions like that, except maybe FF13, when you control the summons.

people on here saying that FF9 was good. Am I the only one that thinks that game was WHACK? It was a mixture of Alice in Wonderland and Dragonball Z. The whole time I played that game I was thinking "Sh!t, SE messed this up." I mean cmon the last boss was a pink super-saiyin looking thing. I know the disagrees are going to come hard but I thought FF9 and FFX2 sucked pink super saiyin balls. My opinion of course.

No doubt. This is IGN's first well written article in a long time... I agree with everything.

Final Fantasy VII is way too high. It's just an average game with terrible characters. Cloud is a confused emo. He has no idea Tifa and Aerith likes him. Sephiroth is a momma's boy who killed a flower girl behind her back. Wow, what a badass. '/s

Kefka is a better antagonist. Hell, he even killed his own men.

Final Fantasy IX is ranked very low. Everything was good in this game, and I liked the fact that FF went back to its roots.

Hisiru3215d ago (Edited 3215d ago )

I agree that Kefka is a MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH better antagonist than Sephirot but no, FFVII isn't "way too high". I think it's at the right position, this game updated the formula, brought new graphics, minigames, new gameplay, great storytelling, great storyline etc. If you don't play videogames for graphics I think we can agree that FFVI is a better game than FFVII but FFVII is an excellent game too.

I hope there will be a remake for both FFVII and FFVI.

Oh, and about IX, I think you are right. I don't know why people dislike it, this is easily one of the best FF games.

Toenado3215d ago (Edited 3215d ago )

I always felt IX was under appreciated. I enjoyed everything about that entry.

bartkuz3215d ago

My favorite is FFVIII. It's way of storytelling(I thing story was the most adult of all FF's) and gameplay was just amazing. I still play it from time to time.

chidori6663216d ago (Edited 3216d ago )

i played ff7 and ff6 and I can say that:

really popularise JRPGS. However Corno tiger rules all.

DatNJDom813215d ago

Ever heard of Xenogears? It a great RPG. That story is so good, it was banned in certain places. Try to buy that game on amazon or ebay. Hundreds of dollars.

ChampIDC3216d ago

It's going to be darn hard for any future FF game to top the brilliance that is FF6.
