Final Fantasy XIII Nears 2 Million Sales Mark

PCWorld: Square Enix's roleplaying spectacle-spinner Final Fantasy XIII sold over 1.5 million units in its first four days on store shelves, reports Japanese tracker Enterbrain. Not bad at all, considering the game's only available for the PlayStation 3 in Japan (the English-language version for both PS3 and Xbox 360 doesn't ship until next March). Square Enix president Yoichi Wada revealed the company has already shipped 1.8 million copies, and expressed hope sales would reach the 2 million mark shortly.

Some perspective: Sony's Japanese PS3 install base stands at around 4 million units. Plug the 1.5 million figure in and you get 38 percent of that base holding a copy of Final Fantasy XIII. What's more, if Wada's forecast is accurate, we'll see that number soar to roughly half of all Japanese PS3 owners in the coming weeks.

And this is only in Japan! Worldwide sales for this game are going to be crazyyyy!

Saaking5233d ago

Damn, FF is HUGE in Japan. I knew it'd sell well, but I honestly didn't think it'd sell this well. I wonder how many PS3s have been sold.

komp5233d ago (Edited 5233d ago )

I am a PS3 Fanboy.

Umm it says 2 million sales in the title yet the article actually says shipped.

Can someone clarify this mistake.

I am still a PS3 fanboy.

EDIT: ROFL @ Disagree, you make this place worth it.

DatNJDom815233d ago

I hope that the success continues in the west. I read somewhere that there were also about 245k PS3/FFXIII bundles sold. Looking good for Sony.

sikbeta5233d ago

Is not "the surprise", we all know this game is HUGE

Lou Ferrigno5233d ago

lol @ KOMP..

i probably was the only one that thot that was funny ..

solidt125233d ago

It hasn't even been a week yet and Japan is so small. Almost at 2 million. Incredible.

darthv725233d ago (Edited 5233d ago )

I will buy two copies when it releases in the US. 1 ps3 for playing and 1 360 for collecting.

FamilyGuy5233d ago (Edited 5233d ago )

1.8 million shipped
1.5 million sold
2.0 million expected? When will the next shipment hit japan or has it already?

I can't wait to get my copy and been watching many of these http://www.justin.tv/d35064... in anticipation.

DaTruth5233d ago

I had no intention of getting this game, but the TGS trailer was one of the best made trailers I've ever seen and the gameplay looked better than I expected. It convinced me to buy VII too!

k2d5232d ago

I'm fed up with this new company that is Square Enix. Final Fantasy has lost its charm. It's time to broaden one's horizon.

I hope Square Enix drops and burn for their greediness.

Udidntlistenpunk5233d ago (Edited 5233d ago )

Thats my estimate. And, of course, the majority of the sales will be on PS3.

Who wants to risk not playing FFversus13?
The only people getting it on 360, are the morons who bought a 360 in 2006 because they thought FF13 and MGS4 will come to the 360. Lmao suckers.

I must say I was rather impressed with it openingmovie. But Im still more excited about versus13.

We will have to wait and see what FF13 brings. Great graphics though.

i can't wait for the final WW sales numbers on each platform when it'll be indisputable that M$ basically financed the PS3 version and xb!tches will realize how deep they got it up the poopoo hole

then i will remember the giant circle jerkoff they had all over the tubes when the SE deal was announced and how sony was so DOOOOOOOMED and sh!t

then, i will laugh so hard i will probably end up in a hospital but it'll be totally worth it

-The whole game is completely linear until halfway through [approximately 20 hours].

-There are hardly any towns.

-The party is always fixed. The whole game just repeats the movie-battle sequence over and over [In fact the progression is closer to movie-run-battle-run-movie-bos s-movie-run-battle…].

-There are rather a lot of movies.

-Moving around is like a long marathon.

-You can’t flee battles [You can’t avoid most battles either as there is no sneaking past enemies, including weak ones].

-Your party is completely healed after each battle.

-If the main character in your party dies it is game over [There are only ever 3 characters in battle, often less, and often fixed].

-The best tactic is almost always endlessly attacking. There is next to no strategy or skill involved.

-The summons’ transformation scenes are a joke [i.e. Odin turning into a horse].

-The story is rubbish… [Spoilers omitted, but complaints centre on Snow’s constant and cringe inducing insistence that he is a hero and will “protect” whatever it is the antagonists are menacing this time]

-Shopping is only done at “online” shops on save points, with no proper shops to be found.

-However, this doesn’t matter as you hardly ever get any money [and you can never buy anything more powerful than what you already looted].

-The status screen displays no real information.

-There are only 8 items usable in combat [For that matter, there are hardly any weapons or accessories, and the “crafting” system mostly consists of spending drops to upgrade their 2 stats].

-There are no levels.

Just to name a few.

kurochi5233d ago

sounds like old school RPG!!! I may be down for one..... LOL

hatchimatchi5233d ago

Have you played the game or did you just copy and paste that list from the news story that was on n4g the other day?

The game is awesome, i have the import. I won't go into too much detail but yes it is linear, at least it has been so far. I'm about 10 hours in. Is being linear a bad thing? I don't think it is in this case, yes some people will hate it but i enjoy it. At least play the finished copy before you automatically cast it aside.

One thing with the list though...too many movies and the game repeats itself with battle/movie/boss, etc.

When has a FF game ever not followed that pattern? It's always been like that. Not to mention, the cutscenes are freaking awesome in this game. Instead of countless text based scenes we get movie scenes. It's the same thing as the old games really.

Hate it all you want but it is a great game, i can't wait for march to get here so i can understand the full story.

Udidntlistenpunk5233d ago

That being said.

- no FF game has ever been linear
- no FF ever had too few towns or cities
- no FF let you have fixed amounts of characters as your party
- no FF has limited amount of gil
- and no, FF movies or cutscenes are awesome and a pre must.

And rofl FF13 in 4 days outsold the entire mystwalker xbox 360 crap line up world wide total COMBINED.

hahaha

stb5233d ago (Edited 5233d ago )

- no FF game has ever been linear (ff x, iv, ff vii!!!!wow even ff ix)

- no FF ever had too few towns or cities (WHO CARES...TWO BIG PLANET IS ENOUGH)

- no FF let you have fixed amounts of characters as your party (FF IX=3 characters....FF VII= 3 characters, FF X....3 CHARACTERS)

- no FF has limited amount of gil (LOOOOLMFAO....)

- and no, FF movies or cutscenes are awesome and a pre must. (LOL ALWAYS)

And rofl FF13 in 4 days outsold the entire mystwalker xbox 360 crap line up world wide total COMBINED. (OWNED)

hahaha

knifefight5233d ago

"There are no leverls" OH NOES!

These guys are:

http://www.n4g.com/News-446...

2 millions would mean half the current installed base in Japan, it's possible but I think there is a huge increase in PS3 sales at the same time, so the attach rate will be lower.

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus119d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim118d ago (Edited 118d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda118d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B117d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125118d ago (Edited 118d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic117d ago (Edited 117d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981117d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot117d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda117d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot117d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy116d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay117d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12119d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay117d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183119d ago (Edited 119d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB118d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
