NVIDIA: AMD's DirectX 11 leadership "insignificant"

NVIDIA expressed last week at an investor event that their rival's short-term leadership in DirectX 11 was "insignificant" in the broader picture.

Nvidia is bringing out a whole new architecture this time, and quite an advanced one at that. Whereas ATI is still using the same arch it's been using since the 2000 series. So obviously Nvidia is going to be a bit late this time. And ATI's new architecture isn't coming out until late 2011.

In the grand scheme of things DX11, it's all good. There aren't enough DX11 games out yet for it to matter much. So Nvidia is safe releasing in Jan/Feb. As most of the good stuff will start coming out in the mid of 2010 and beyond.

The ATI chip is also a completely new design as well.

The current 5870 single chip card will beat a ASUS Mars which is a twin GTX295 chip card.

The ATI card can run crysis at 1920x1200 with 2xAA at ultra high settings and still pull a soild 30FPS.

ATI have also just released the 5890 which is the twin chip version which just makes current benchmarks silly to bother with.

Anyway - the single chip does 21818 in 3DMark 06
and P17011 in 3DMark Vantage

This alone blows away all the old high end cards out there for miles.

@zag: The ATI 5000 series is not a new architecture haha. It's basically two 4000 series chips merged together. ATI has stated that their new architecture is coming in 2011. The 5000 series is not a new architecture. Learn more about the subject your talking about before spouting claims like that. Every new generation of cards is not a new architecture. ATI's last new architecture was the HD 2000 series. And Nvidia's was the 8000 series.

And the ASUS Mars doesn't have two GTX295's in it. It has two GTX 285's, which are single chip GPU's. GTX 295's have two GTX 285's in them. Basically the Mars is a GTX 295, with a lot more memory and higher clocks.

Oh, and I don't know what reviews you've been reading, but the 5870 doesn't beat a GTX 295. It's beats the single GPU GTX 285's sometimes, but not always.

And this is against Nvidia's now old generation compared to ATI's new 5000 series generation. Come Jan/Feb Nvidia will be taking the performance crown back.

I don't think Nvidia will lose too much ground by introducing new cards a few months later. The things that will determine what card people buy next is which card is more powerful and cheaper than the competitor. I know Nvidia cards are always more expensive but if this "new architecture" makes a big difference in performance, I wouldn't mind paying more.

Its only insignificant when Nvidia doesn't have the lead.

If the roles were reversed, Nvidia would spewing out the advertising about their cards being the first DX11 on the market etc. AMD/ATI is cleaning their clocks right now and they know it.

I am no fanboy, I own cards from both companies.

This is nothing more than damage control for Nvidia. They need to reassure those weary shareholders.

Theres a reason that the majority of PC games have "The Way it Meant to be Played" before the main menu. I don't think ATI even has a slogan, and if they do that just shows how ineffective their ad campaign has been so far. ATI/AMD simply does not have the developer support that Nvidia has, and whether Nvidia bought that loyalty or not is irrelevant.
The number of games that run better on Nvidia cards is reason enough to stick with them.

Whatever Nvidia does with DX 11 it'll be worth the wait.

I had a GTX 285 which failed under warranty so ebuyer exchanged it for the HD 5850.

I have had 5 cards since 2007 but 1 could have been enough

I can safely say I will be getting Fermi (GTX 360 or GTX 380)

I found the Build quality on both Nvidia cards to be far Superior to all the ATi cards
I found the Nvidia software is far superior to ATi Software
The Fans on Nvidia card are quiet with the card running cool, but ATi fans are like a jet engine

Like I have always been told "The Best Always Cost" so true, so who wants a kidney

Actually that's not why they run cooler. They run cooler because they have a smaller die size and memory bus in comparison to similar powered Nvidia cards. Because Nvidia's cores are designed with CUDA/GPGPU in mind, they take up a lot more space. And thus more heat is created and a bigger card..

Also, Nvidia's drivers are known for being much more reliable/stable than ATI's. Mainly due to Nvidia's much larger driver design team since they can afford it.

Nvidia 260 failed me and ran like crap
Now I have a 4890 and have not had 1 bit of trouble, Crysis runs smooth and never had a driver problem either. So it isn't just ATI cards that fail it is on a person by person basis.

Until Nvidia can release a DX11 capable card NOW that is faster then the current ATI cards, then Nvidia is just talking crap.
By the time they release Fermi, ATI might be on their refresh GPU. That's the problem when releasing a GPU late.

They're hardly talking crap lol. They are stating the reality of the situation. There is no rush to get DX11 cards out yet.

And Nvidia has DX11 capable cards ready. It's just that TSMC has been having very sh*tty 40nm yields, and Nvidia had to push for another chip revision to increase yields. Delaying the release of their DX11 cards until January.

So their DX11 cards are coming out very soon, way before ATI will have a die shrink out. Nvidia is only being 2-3 months late to the DX11 game, that's hardly anything to whine about. Especially considering the revolutionary new architecture Nvidia will be releasing. It was inevitable that they would be a bit later to the game than ATI, since ATI is waiting until 2011 to do their new architecture, and only had to do another core increase and slight modifications like they did with 3000 and 4000 series.

You don't seem to be understand the context of their statements. They are not saying that DX11 doesn't matter. They are merely saying there is no rush AT THE MOMENT. This isn't an opinion, it's a damn fact of the industry. And yes of course they are trying to ease the minds of investors also. One has to do that to help bring good success.

And sure nobody knows how fast for sure, but you can make rough guesses based on the hardware white-paper that was released. Since Fermi will have double the cores, it's going to take back the performance crown it had over the 4000 series. As both teams will have doubled core counts.

The rest is unknown, like how much more or less of a performance advantage it will have due to the plethora of changes the Fermi architecture brings.

And yes brand fanaticism is stupid. And so is making claims without actually looking at the data.

In the end the cards do run cooler. Faster. More features then what Nvidia has to offer right now. And their drivers are very stable...and I am a Nvidia user. LOL

Nvidia:
Natively execute C/C++/FORTRAN code
CUDA - (These first two things require more complex/larger cores.)
PhysX
3D Vision
WHQL Certified fully functioning OpenCL

ATI:
Eyefinity - (This only requires a small addition beside the ROP's.)
OpenCL

And that's not counting all the programmer/developer side of things that Nvidia has implemented in their architecture.

Yes ATI's drivers are stable enough, that's not what I was saying. It's the in general stability across the user base. ATI is known for having more bugs in drivers and having more users experience issues than Nvidia does. Nvidia has a lot larger development team. Just do some research on it and you'll learn about that.

And I'm an ATI user. My last Nvidia card was a GeForce4 MX 4000 LOL.
