Five games to beat Halo Reach in 2010

GamerZines: Xbox marketing exec Aaron Greenberg recently told Gamasutra, "I feel confident that there's nothing that will compare in size, Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010."

Now Microsoft's over-confidence aside, we can understand why Mr Greenberg would make such a claim but there are a handful of titles which could challenge for the top spot.

I agree with the article 100%. I would rather play Heavy Rain or The Last Guardian instead another Halo rehash. Innovative games where welcomed last generation but all of a sudden 10's are given out to average games which lack innovation since M$ introduced the 360.

Now ask yourself why that is?

THE MAX SPEED 215663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

I bet you warent saying that about KZ2 though. Graphics aside what makes KZ2 so innovative or Ratched and Clank or MGS4 or wipeout ? nothing and they all received great scores. making 90minutes of cut-scenes available in a game is not innovation. Making a Copy of F-zero is not innovation. Making a platformer that awfuly looks familiar to Jak & Daxter is not innovation. See where I'm going with this? GOOD games on PS3 , Xbox, Wii get good scores that's it.

And LOL @ blamming everything on the xbox360. gtfo

Bereaver5663d ago

How can you say KZ2 wasn't innovative? It's style of classes, it's style of non stop multiplayer action through constantly changing objectives and of course.... as you mentioned... the graphics.

Now about Ratchet and Clank... I'm not sure if they brought anything innovative about it.... but... it's the only game in this age that brings the same feeling it gives. So... even though it's old... it still has an exclusive feeling to it.

And PLEASE don't say anything about MGS4. Anything you can possibly say will NEVER bring it down. MGS is a fantastic franchise and all it needs is to follow the story.

Lou-Cipher5663d ago

A game doesn't have to innovate to be a good game.

Killzone 2 is a great game because they did alot of things right. They made a game with a good Single Player experience, and an addictive Multiplayer experience. Plus, they realized that this is no longer the PS2/Xbox 1/Gamecube generation anymore, and made a HD game with HD visuals, and HD audio.(cant say that about Halo3)

Have you noticed how every single Halo game gets lower & lower scores every time a new game comes out. Why do you think that is?

Quality is not a concern with Microsoft & Bungie, they only care about money, and that is why you will never have another Halo that scores better than Halo 1.

THE MAX SPEED 215663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

LMAO! ok yeah you're a PS3 fanboy.

"Now about Ratchet and Clank... I'm not sure if they brought anything innovative about it.... but... it's the only game in this age that brings the same feeling it gives. So... even though it's old... it still has an exclusive feeling to it. "

Have you even Played Mario Galaxy or Zelda Twilight Princess?

Speaking of MGS. I have nothing Against the MGS series. I owned all the games from PSone to PS2. What I'm saying is Tell me what is so innovative in MGS4? It's the same as the previous ones with with Upgraded Graphics .Domt get me wrong
MGS4, Ratchet , Wipeout all deserved those good scores even though they arent as innovative some other games were.

LBP , Heavy Rain , Lair are something out of the common and those games are innovative.

EDIT: @ Lou

of Course a game doesnt have to be Innovative to be good that's exactly what I am saying . But it seems that the 1st commenter is saying that games that dont innovate arent good. And its because of MS that they are getting good scores.
Tell that to the 1st comment who is a PS3 fanboy. not me

StanLee5663d ago

2 games can match Halo Reach in terms of visibility and sales next year; Mario Galaxy 2 and Gran Turismo 5. If Halo Reach is the huge leap Geoff Keighley has hyped it to be, Reach may have an edge just because of the wow factor.

silvacrest5663d ago

the real question is WHY does a game NEED to be innovative?

if it is and does it well, great, i welcome it but many people like more of the same, MW2 is proof of this

@THE MAX SPEED 21, whats so innovative about MGS you ask? what game has a story that engages you on so many levels like the MGS franchise does? the only thing that comes close is god of war even so, it doesnt need to be innovative to be good

Tiberium5663d ago

The title should have read, "five games halo reach will beat in 2010"

heroicjanitor5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

But they are more of a fresh take on things than innovative, I think you are confusing the two. LBP was innovative, Heavy Rain will be. But I think you have started to be influenced by critics of ps3 games, who always say not enough innovation.

If they say that, yet it is a very good game then they can go f*ck themselves since all that matters is that it is a good game and that it is doing better than it's peers.

Technology advancements are more important to me than innovation on the scale these reviewers demand of ps3 games, they want all new genres but we like the genres we have:)

Gran Turismo 5 technology is amazing and we'll have to wait for Halo:Reach's debut to tell if it has advanced or if it is more of the same. It will probably be a very good game if it is more of the same but I'd like some technological advancements as I said.

Applegate5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Halo Reach will be the biggest game in 2010 no doubt.

kalebgray925663d ago

god of war 3, heavy rain, bioshock 2, mass effect 2, they are so many good games coming out next year halo reach is just another shooter.... it might be better.... but we can not tell until saturday when we see the trailer

Perjoss5663d ago

was wondering when the paranoia articles would begin.

Cold 20005663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

"the real question is WHY does a game NEED to be innovative?"

The real answer is that they dont. Its just something PS3 fanboys spit when a 360 exclusive gets hype and/or AAA scores.

Like the Max Speed pointed out, games like KZ2, Resistance, God of War 3, Infamous, Uncharted are innovative at all but the PS3 crowd is more than satisfied by them.

Im not saying innovation isnt needed, it is, but Sony fanboys only complain about "lack of innovation" and suddenly feel a deep need for it when it concerns 360 or multiplat games.

Unicron5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

A game doesn't need to be innovative to be great. It just needs to do what it does well, and if it's a sequel, please its fans. I think Halo is fun, but I'm not a huge fan. I like the mythology more than the games themselves. Reach WILL be huge, but since I'm not its target audience, I don't really care. No amount of marketing or hype or promises can really change that. Nor am I a racing sim fan, so I don't care about GT5 either. However, I do respect that both franchises are juggernauts and do what they do well.

At the same time, I won't knock down people who ARE excited for them, and neither should any of you. Bungie is a talented team, if people are fans, let them enjoy the series they love. Me? I'm more psyched for other titles. I don't get why people cling to review scores and sales to dictate what they love. Reach selling 5 million copies won't make Peace Walker any less fun or important to me, for example.

Blaze9295663d ago

"I think it's going to be the biggest game of next year by far."

...'nuff said

Why o why5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

best comment but only from a sales perspective and thats NOT my primary gauge for huge but yeah.....greenberg chooses his words and he did not use the 'quality' word and that speaks volumes

@ cold.....tut, tut you can blame the gaming media for displaying blatant doubles standards from 'nothing innovative' on one console to 'if it aint broke dont fix it' on the other Yes Edge im looking at you. Point is a game does NOT have to be innovative to be great but some strange double standards have been shown in favour of some consoles games other others...please dont act blind to the fact

ABizzel15663d ago

Can you imagine what the GOTY awards are going to be like in 2010. My goodness I'd hate to be the one making the cuts since people are going to hate you either way, because there are multiple games that deserve awards based off their demos/beta alone.

Getting on topic Halo Reach is going to be huge, but there are a ton of other games that are as well.

Sales wise- Halo Reach, Call of Duty, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy 13, and Mario Galaxy 2 are going to be sales giants.

Review wise- God of War 3, Halo Reach, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy 13, Marion Galaxy 2, Mass Effect 2, and Bioshock 2 are all going to top the charts. (Other games: Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake). And remember all of these games are in the first 3 months of the year with the exception of Halo Reach (and Alan Wake).

So if you're talking about both categories then Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy 13, and Mario Galaxy 2 are going to give Halo Reach it's most competition. All of these games should review in the 90's/100 and rack up at least 5 million in sales.

callahan095663d ago

"Have you even Played Mario Galaxy or Zelda Twilight Princess?"

The better question is: have you ever played Ratchet & Clank? It's nothing like either of the two games you mentioned.

multipayer5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Than finally, we as "PS3 fanboys" come to the conclusion that halo is not innovative, despite being an original science fiction that pioneered several weapons in the FPS genre, and gives you the freedom to go where you want to go with vehicles and platforming abilities. Much like other FPS that don't really exist as frequint.

Title is correct, it would take five games to make Halo Reach less significant in 2010.

Solidus187-SCMilk5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

I have a feeling its going to be at least a "good" game and will be very successful in many different ways.

We should just leave it at that so that the many dont get upset when every thing they come up with fails to "kill halo."

Im thinking the most successful games coming up will be GT5, FF13, MG2 and Halo reach. One of them doing the best wont stop the others from doing great, so I dont see the point of a stupid article like this.

Ther is NO GAME that can kill HALO, Final fantasy, GranTurismo, or Mario. They cant even kill each other(especially if you consider they are on different platforms mostly).

Also Id like to know why so many games ripped off the recharging shields in halo. Only in most games it makes no sense as its health recharging(gears/uncharted/cod ). The only games which should have recharging vitality is halo and wolverine games. Or if its part of the story like in borderlands. Im sick of games that inexplicably have characters with recharging health.

kalebgray925663d ago

i dont think its that... its just halo 3 was the same as anything.... everyone loved halo both ps and xbox fanboys imo... halo 2 ppl were mad cuz of the ending but other than that everyone loved it.... now halo 3 was good but the campaign was meh... i hope that reach is one of the great games of the generation... i hope

vhero5663d ago

Halo reach bigger than FF13?? Maybe... Better than FF13? Doubtful... It will be overhyped like all over Halos since the first game (which was amazing) and get non deserving too high scores. How about they try make a non Halo game for once? Bungie are too scared of coming out of the Halo cocoon they are in and making something else. Also Halo reach might not come out in 2010..

nycredude5663d ago

max Speed

I don't see a problem with Dutch's first comment. It seems like you are the one who is the fan here.

"I agree with the article 100%. I would rather play Heavy Rain or The Last Guardian instead another Halo rehash. Innovative games where welcomed last generation but all of a sudden 10's are given out to average games which lack innovation since M$ introduced the 360."

Tell me again what part of this comment is NOT true?

Shepherd 2145663d ago

Halo Reach will be hard to knock off. After seeing what bungie accomplished with Halo 3's robust and hugely expanded multiplayer features, its a compelling to think what they will do with Reach. nNot to mention i love Halo's story. Peter Jackson fell in love with Halo's story, thats gotta prove something.

otherZinc5663d ago

Excluding COD 7 (that Halo:Reach will beat on the 360 handedly), Halo:Reach will beat all combined numbers of the remaining 4 idiotic titles this author suggested.

This is a clear win for Halo:Reach, people can hate all they want, this is going to be a powerful game that will be played until the next Halo game & long after that!

Fragger2k85662d ago

vhero, Shows how much you know.

Bungie is, and has been, working on a new IP. No one knows anything about it yet, but they've said at least a few different times that they are doing something new. They've even mentioned before that they would like to get away from Halo for a while to work on other things. Also, Bungie is not just in it for the money. The main reason they did ODST was for the fans.

Reach will be one of the biggest games next year, if not the biggest. I'm confident that Bungie is creating something really great.

flash745662d ago

The point of the article isn't what game will win game of the year, or be considered the best or most innovative. It's about what will be the biggest. Halo, like it or not, is going to bury everything else coming out in 2010. With what little we still know about the game, my focus is on games like Bioshock2, Mass Effect, and GOW3. That said, none of these will touch Halo in sales. It would probably take all three to even match Halo in sales. As far as being fresh and original, that arguement is just flat-out getting old. Look at Final Fantasy, Madden Football, or most racing games. All they do is tweak something here or there, the main concept on most of those games is the same. As long as you make a game that's fun and well designed, you will most likely have a winner.

Halo will be the biggest game of 2010.

When we say the biggest we dont mean like it's the Best Game etc etc etc. we're just saying yall know how MS rolls and you can expect that REACH will be hyped like crazy making it one of the biggest games of 2010.

5663d ago
silvacrest5663d ago

yeah, i no what to expect

microsoft will blow another $30 million on advertising, whether the game is good or bad does not matter

trancefreak5663d ago

just keep rollin halo out ever year thats your money train ms. take it from activision.

Diamondwolf5663d ago

Why does it matter?

Seriously, why? Everyone knows MS will market the living F out of it. I hated Halo 3, but I tried it first, and I'm very anxious to try Halo: Reach.

Lemme rephrase that, I hated a lot of things about Halo 3 but I love some things from it.

The game is going to do well, point, blank, period. We know reviewers are going to give it a ridiculous score, whether it deserves it or not is all in the eyes of the beholder.

We all know that reviewers have skewed opinions just like you all have, some slanted towards PS3, most slanted towards the 360 and you know why? it's because MS is better than Sony at getting the word out and getting people behind them, ESPECIALLY in their home territory.

Now, for some PS3 fanboys who said in a previous article where are the "Will so and so do better than [insert Xbox exclusive]", here you are.

Willio5663d ago

"I feel confident that there's nothing that will compare in size, Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010."

Doesn't DVD only have 7.9 gigs of useable space on the 360?

You are an idiot if you believe Halo Reach will be bigger than Gran Turismo 5.

God of War III/Mass Effect 2/Final Fantasy 13/Gran Turismo 5/Bio-Shock2/The Last Guardian will all have higher Meta Scores.

Gran Turismo 5 will have higher sells than Halo Reach, & Halo ODST combined.

Halo Reach will have a mediocre Single Player Story that last about 7-8 hours tops. It will be the same ol Multiplayer with different maps and upgraded graphics(wont top Gears of War 1 Graphics, but it will look better than Halo 3)

Microsoft & Bungie will spend more money on advertising(brainwashing)than they will on the actual game. that will result in another mediocre game that sells way more than it deserves. (That's what MS does best)

THE MAX SPEED 215663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Yes. You can Confirm that. You went to the future played Last guardian , Halo Reach , ME2 ,FF13 and BioShock 2 and came back.

Can't the game be on 2 DISCs? I mean MW2 is on 2 on PC. ME2 is on 2 Discs also.

So why can't reach be on 2 disc? Speaking of 8 hours Campaigns. Wasnt that the Time the KZ2 single player lasted?

Oh Yeah I forgot you went 2 the future. Silly me.

Fishy Fingers5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Modern Warfare 2 on the PC is on 1 DVD, any second disc is bonus content.

Lou-Cipher5663d ago

I don't need to visit the future to know that Microsoft & Bungie don't care about quality. (that's common knowledge)

If they cared about the quality, they wouldn't of spent $25 million on advertising, when the games development cost was also $25 million.

They would have spent $45 million on the actual game and $5 million on the advertising if they truly cared.(then maybe it would have deserved the score it got)

They wouldn't have released a console 3 years before it was ready.

If they cared about quality they wouldn't charge $60 bucks for ODLC

If they cared about quality, they wouldn't charge for Online.

Nobody need to travel to the future to see that Microsoft and anyone who sells their soul to Microsoft doesn't give a rats a$$ about their consumers, and they sure don't care about the quality of their products.

I was not trying to imply that the Story would suck because its 7-8 hours long, I was implying that it wont be the biggest game of 2010 with a 7-8 hour campaign.

Even if it does come on two discs, it still wont be as big as Gran Turismo 5.(and possibly Heavy Rain/GoW III ect ect)

Hanif-8765663d ago

I couldn't of said it better myself!

xboxlj5663d ago

I hit disagree instead of agree by mistake. However I completely agree with you. Halo seems to be the ps3 fanboys enemy. You mention it and they start to go crazy trying to put it down.

Nac5663d ago (Edited 5663d ago )

Bungie didn't spend anything on Advertising, that was all Microsoft.
Btw, have you even played ODST?

ceedubya95663d ago

I would think that when the term "big" is considered in reference to Reach, I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with the size of the game, but in its overall popularity and such. There are few game franchises that can touch the levels of recognition of the Halo name, so to say that REach will be the biggest game of 2010 (quality and game length aside) isn't to far of a stretch based on past games.

SixZeroFour5663d ago

@lou - why you adding MS' faults into dragging down bungie?

"They wouldn't have released a console 3 years before it was ready."
-bungie had nothing to do with releasing the 360

"If they cared about quality they wouldn't charge $60 bucks for ODLC"
-pretty sure MS made the price become 60 instead of the original 20-30 intended WHEN FIRST ANNOUNCED a couple years/months before release

"If they cared about quality, they wouldn't charge for Online. "
-again, bungie has nothing to do with charging for LIVE membership

as for the other things you pointed out with cost and ad money, i dont know exactly who did what, but im sure MS chose how much to put into what (ad or dev wise)

bungie does care about its fans and the quality oft their game, if you actually look back at the graphics of 1-3, it did change significantly and try not to just remember how it looked and actually look at screens, i recently watched rvb season 1 on waypoint, played halo 2 for swat a month or 2 ago and watched some trailer for map pack for halo 3 and the graphics DID in fact change throughout the series (halo 3 graphics were good for its time, dont think you can update graphics year after year to compete with recent graphics when the games already out...multiplayer was the highlight for 2 and 3, and bungie changed a lot of things up for the development of REACH including using a new engine, so no you cant in fact make all those claims and pass them off as fact

Pandamobile5663d ago

PC games don't run off discs. Half-Life 2 came on 5 CD's when I bought it, so multiple discs have never been an issue for PC games.

Console games however would require disc swapping mid-gameplay, so it's in their best interest to use one disc.

flash745662d ago

Sorry, but GT5 is going to get buried by Halo. You have to keep in mind the 100million+ install base that PS2 had which gave past GT's great sales numbers. The current PS3 base is a fraction of that, and won't even come close to helping GT beat Halo. As far as Call of Duty, the next one on deck is Treyarch, do I need to say anything else? World at War sucked. The only good COD's are made by Infinity Ward. Treyarch would find a way to screw it up if IW made the game for them, and all they had to do was package the disks.
