America's Army Cost Taxpayers $32.8 Million

America's Army, the game that makes army recruiting FUN, cost taxpayers a pretty penny. How much you ask? $32.8 million. That's what the cost of the series has been to date (the game launched in 2001). It was originally planned to be a five-year long project with a total operating budget of $7.0 million. Here's the cost breakdown...

Lol, I actually signed up to receive letters and information from the Army just so I could get the first one for free... but then it just wasn't worth it because every week I would have a recruiter calling me and it got pretty annoying.

Noctis Aftermath5250d ago

A government funded project going over budget? shocking.

I hate the America Army website, our heroes page it's starting to freak me out... I believe our heroes should be respected and awarded but I highly doubt Heroes want more people to go to the war after all it's horrid enviroment for any human.

The goverment knows this game will attract the youth who can be easily drawn in.

Darkstorn5250d ago

I don't have strong feelings either way, as $33 million is next to nothing in national politics, but there ARE far better games out there.

Even so, the government does have better things to do than design video games...I think actual developers have done a fine job doing just that over the last 40 years.

HolyOrangeCows5250d ago

He needs the recruiting power for his 30,000 more troops.

They should give that man a nobel peace prize, lol.

Bnet3435250d ago

I remember I did the same. Took up the offer to get the game for free by mail and accept letters. Then I moved lol.

Hey Government, can I have my money back now for this sorry excuse for a recruitment tool? Oh, what's that? Your evil and will keep raising taxes while shoveling money into your pockets, cool! Canada or Amsterdam, here I come!

darkmurder5250d ago

its one of their highest recruiting tools based on its success ratio.

you yanks think its bad, our UK government spends £76bn A YEAR maintaining Trident nuclear missile systems we will never use

Darkstorn5250d ago

The U.S. has a $400 billion a year defense budget (not including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan)...talk about overdoing it.

Panthers5250d ago

Governments seem to be good at wasting money. I dont know about the UK, but the US government has so many useless programs they are paying for that this almost seems like a worthwhile investment.

Darkstorn5250d ago

@2.2-
I think too many social programs is better than too few. Living in Sweden would be preferable to living in Somalia.

cyclindk5250d ago

Wasted?! Just you wait until an asteroid comes hurling our way and you'll be thankful for all the nukes.

Tiberium5250d ago

having an nuclear system is the only thing stopping an enemy from nuking you. So it's not a waste.

It would be interesting to know what its actual effect is on recruitment.

dkgshiz5250d ago

We just bailed out the banks with $800 billion! Whats another $32 million going to do?

Dir_en_grey5250d ago

If you understand economics, bailing out banks was nessasary to save the US economy. If that many banks all fail, the ripple effect would mess up everybody in US and even to the extent of other countries.

Army recruit is nessasary also, but this is a bad and wasteful way to do it.

TapiocaMilkTea5250d ago

Yeah, after the bailout, I no longer believe top executives always make the best decisions. Billions of dollars are wasted for no other reason than greed, 30 million overbudget for a project is nothing, at least you see some product that comes out of it.

TheIneffableBob5250d ago

$32.8 million for 10 years is pretty damn good.

To buy five M1 Abrams tanks would cost the same amount.

9 Games Used For Propaganda Purposes

Propaganda. It's that thing that's all around us and is probably bad for you, but no one gives a shit, except for one man because he's all out of gum: [audience laughs]. Okay, that probably wasn't a John Oliver-worthy opening, but propaganda in video games is real and has influenced many a game since the inception of the industry itself.

Independence Day feature: Top 3 patriotic games - Pixel Enemy

Ah, America. I hear it’s the land of the free and the home of the Whopper. Sure, it’s in somewhat deep shit over PRISM and several other scandals, but you can’t help but respect it for at least trying to make those scandals possible.

With that out of the way, it’s Independence Day here in the United States. You’re more likely to find a barbecue than productivity this time of year, so in the spirit of things, our reviews editor Andrew Esposito and I have decided to compile our top 3 patriotic games. These are games that will make Lady Liberty herself blush with shame for her relative lack of patriotism.

Freedom Fighters says hello! Such a short sighted list. It should be at least number 3 on that list. Metal Gear feels a lot more Japanese than American.

Notable mention for the most American games ever:

- Ford vs Chevy
- Assassin's Creed 3
- Counter Strike
- Scarface: The World is Yours
- Cabela's franchise
- Saints Row the Third
- Mortal Kombat
- Call of Duty franchise

P.S. Murica!!!

Aesposito4263947d ago

Freedom Fighters was on the list. Fantastic game! It was 2, top 3 lists. Freedom Fighters came in at #2 on one of them :)

Godlovesgamers3947d ago

These "patriotic games" list is just idiotic.

The threat of unbalanced design in modern gaming

Most gamers are quick to ridicule unfair game design situations, but why have we allowed this boom to continue anyway?
