Sony's media/investor conference appears to have leaked all of their plans for next year, TheSixthAxis look through the fine detail and report on the fact Sony are looking to bring non-game software to the PS3 next year.

I wonder what types of apps will come. They should take a look at the PSP homebrew community and base some of the apps off of that. Like a youtube app so you dont have to use the web browser, twitter app, SKYPE app with voice and video support!

Am I the only one who reads the non-software as exactly as it reads in the slide: video/ comic etc.

Its basically all media content that is not a game which is what is being pointed at.
So possible they'll revive the sony music connect store and let ppl download music off PSN. Add ebooks, further the reach of vidzone etc.

An app store would be neat but I somehow dont see them going that route just et.

App Store would DEFINITELY be a good idea on the PS3. This way, instead of having Life with PlayStation, Home, Photo Gallery, etc. having show up on the XMB, you can download the icon!

This would make the XMB roomier, and maybe people can download the PS Store Shortcuts as an app, too.

i dont think its just a PS3 thats going to have this. Last nights PSP update not only added that comic book app, but added the extras XMB icon.

im hoping for a youtube app in the future. that would be epic.

I really hope this is true, so that hopefully someone can port a media player such as Mplayer or VLC so that i can play mkv without linux, this is the only thing besides custom music in games.

Aren't we always hearing about professional level developers talking about how difficult/different the PS3 is to code for? Unless Sony has some sort of coding program masterpiece under way, how will we ever see this?

Just for my two cents, if Sony does go through with it then my choice as a student would be OpenOffice.org. Most schools still require assignments be .doc with no .docx files and OpenOffice has near perfect .doc support and Excel and PowerPoint compatibility is very usable with current version.
OpenOffice has .docx support but not quite as polished as the above.

My Point.... I wouldn't need a computer as a student if Sony had good App support (as well as printer compatibility). All my student, HD Movie, gaming, and social integration needs rapped up in a $350 (will need a bigger HDD drive than 120gb if used for things above). If you don't have a PC keyboard already it will probably put you at $400 (Logitech's current PS3 is pretty good if you want PS3 features but any usb keyboard will do). Name a $400 dollar PC that can game at the level that the PS3 can play equipped with a Blu-ray player. There isn't one.

Right now the only thing holding PS3 back from a very nice poor person's computer is an App Store for non gaming software.
