nah I will use it a lot. My best friend and I always like talking to eachother whilst playing games. Plus make it easier to get stuff organised before we hop into a game. Sometimes I just voicechat to friends without playing anygames. But I'd much rather do it whilst playing.
I wouldn't do it playing games for the first time but for the things like tekken and fifa, or a game I've beaten before cross game chat would be sick. Plus like I said, prep for online play.

Oh, I will appreciate that feature very much. You can talk to people not playing your game, discuss party setup, or invite people not in your game. Also, its a private channel, which means you can chit-chat without annoying others in the game. I can talk to my son overseas while he's playing another game. That's a great feature.

Like we haven't heard that one before. I remember seeing article like this a year ago after every firmware update. It will be here soon enough. Don't get your hopes up to be disappointed. We have been receiving good updates on a regular basis since launch and the PS3 has come a long way.

I really don't think I will be using this feature. I just don't like to talk to other people when I am playing an intense match of Killzone 2 multiplayer but that's just me. There are a huge amount of PS3 users who want to be able to talk to their friends while they play their games and the voice of all these people should not be ignored. It's an option for those who want to avail it and I am damn sure that once this feature goes live, it will be very well received. Not to mention the fact that it'll be the death of XBLA in many ways. I don't see how paying $50 a year could give me the kind of service that I am already getting on PSN for free or how XBLA is better than PSN as it is right now. Anyway, again, that is a choice for people to make and I am quite happy with my free PSN and would welcome to see more features added to it so that it attracts even more people.

PS: I know the feature may seem mundane to some and trust me when I say this: You might think you aren't going to use the feature but you will. It really is a cool and big addition. (Unless you don't have a headset and/or hate to talk in online games)

They should even combine that with a (low priority) video stream - if you have a camera - in a small thumbnail in the corner of the screen. Just for the fun of it (but without eating bandwidth, if too slow). I'd LMAO to see people swearing while playing :) ha ha.

Ha, yeah, I'm a muter as well. I honestly can't stand having to listen to people talk while I play. The other day I was playing Uncharted 2 and I forgot to mute it, so i had to suffer through an entire match of these Italian guys rapping to each other.

Is there a way to mute mid-game? I guess I should have tried... :-(

Anyway, yeah, cool feature for those who want it. but I, for one, don't care.

Yeah you should be able to pull up the select screen and mute individual players in the game but UC2 muting is a little different from other games. Even though you mute them, I'm almost positive they can still hear you (Unless they released a patch in the last week or so). Just FYI for whatever reason.

But only mute those who are being obnoxious. Otherwise you'll just be adding to the already barren sound that is silence on PSN. People who play competitively find that extremely annoying... :\

Yeah, I have to admit, I don't play too many online games, so I never really got into the whole chatting part of it. I do have a headset, but I rarely feel the urge to turn it on.

I do enjoy using the headsets when I'm playing online with people I know, though.

uh, I don't think you got a chance to cheat with a little video window. It'll have to be small anyway, and takes to much time to grab the camera and take a shot. Well, maybe to find campers, yeah (is that a bad thing ? LOL). I would guess by the time you grab the cam and take a shot, you'll be dead already. And you can still do that with xchat easier anyway (keeps your hands free).

Since we have x-game invites that COD:MW2 has implemented, all we need is x-game chat and we what the 360 had a year ago, before the party system.

Then wrap it up in a package and call it a party and boom, finito.

Now all sony has to do is REQUIRE devs to use all these features.

Most of the time when I have friends on or Online buddies.. I just send them a messege with what game Im about to play and we play and talk in the game.. Or I just hop in the game they are playing and then talk..

But since Ive never had the feature maybe I adapted without it?

It people can't see why its a useful feature then your dumb. Even when the psn does get this feature though, live is still miles ahead with other feature such as unified friend join/invites feature which the psn will never get.

Or though the psn won't get unified friends invites, cross game chat will make this a whole lot easier as some games (most) having a completely shocking method of inviting friends. So with a private party chat then it all can be arranged a lot easier.

I do agree that sony needs to make these functions standard on every game, but it works fantastic. Just click the invite and your transported into your party/game. If you dont got the game it will prompt you.

Yes I noticed it on mw2 and it works perfectly but tbh its unlikely other developers will do the same for future/upcoming games, even recent ps3 exclusive games don't have it this good (uncharted 2). I don't know why sony didn't make this feature mandatory when they made the trophies mandatory.

this is not a feature i will use much, but its an option to use it. And its free, but honestly only time i could see using this wen im playing singleplayer on a game i beaten and trying to collect all the stuff. But in Multiplayer game? that just makes things complicated. I PLAY online to concentrate on the game and only chat to those in the gme. I honestly don't know whats so huge about this feature. But hey at least 360 is running out of reason to justify that 40bucks a year.

what is unified friend join/invites feature?

On xbox live, every game has this feature. You simply access your friends list and select a friend you want to invite to your game, that friend will get a message and via the message if they accept they get connected and put straight in the same game as you.

Regardless, if a friend sees you on a game and wants to join you, they can go to there friends list and click to join you, without you having to send them invite.

This works well because the xbox has been using the same infastructure for all games since day one.

you guys finally getting this takes the wind from my sails as an xboxer however its been a long run so its all good. I wonder if sony is going to start charging for something online. I mean the business end of it has to give once a console is sold thats it except for movies and games to pay for online but thats it. While MS makes money off every console sold that goes online at 1 month 3 month and 12 month intervals that is alot of money maybe MS will give us an ultimate feature for paying cause people will start to complain that sony is free with the same online features so MS has to and will step it up i know this cause since launch my console has evolved as has the ps3 but at that price and those expectations they failed us early front if u want but i had a ps2 and i was wooed to the other side by smart business decisions and as a gamer maybe now i am starting to pay attention to sony but i havent had to for awhile so my question is will u guys ever pay?

You forget that Sony is a much bigger company.. Sony makes TVs, Movie studios, laptops, Phones, Game consoles... ETC... MS is mostly a Computer company.. Sony can justify giving away a free service as their money comes from all aspects of the entertainment industry.. Thats why they dont trip on not making money in the beginning of each console war.. Because they know they can make the money elseware.. and that the console they make will eventually make money.. It happens everytime the same way..

but pc has been well capable of doing 1600*1200 since 98, thats way beyond the current 720p hd standard. even today a 100usd gpu does 1080p near 60fps no problems.. while consoles would be lucky to be doing 1080 in even 10% of their titles.

btw when Quake 3 came out it looked awesome, nothing on any system came close to it.

For 1 it's juss so convient. Don't know about u guys, but I have a group of gamers that from time 2 time like ta have open conversations about GotY Awards (FPS)(RPG)(RTS) ect., and also how a particular game is that we all juss purchased.

Got alot ov gamers that also chat alot; while texting on PS3 is kewl, it would b so much simpler to voice chat while still surfing online, or like someone mentioned above, "playing a game u've already beatened."

When P4 comes, you'll have to create another acct as well.

It's not something I'd use often to sit there chatting away aimlessly whilst playing a single player game. But to be able to put in a call to a friend or 3 to suggest all jumping on a game together would be very useful.

And if it is done in a party chat way then it would be handy if I'm playing COD with a few friends, as we tend to mute all the other people in the team so we can hear each other over the singing, fuzzy music, aimless shouting, and retarded comments, ect. If we could just be talking to each other the whole time then that would be better than having to mute all the idiots every game. Of course that makes it alot harder to communicate with the other odd few sensible people in the game, but seeing as they seem to be out numbered by the tw@ts, its a small price to pay.

Seriously...I don't see what the big fuss is about cross-game chat...I rarely used on my 360, to me is seems like it would be an annoyance if anything if another person wants to chat while your playing a game and you are really into the game and trying to concentrate, but hey, if they add it, its all good, just seeing an e-mail message pop up from whoever wants to talk is good enough for me since you can pretty access the XMB and read the message.
