Microsoft responds to XBL bans over modded 360 consoles

VG247: Microsoft has responded to the wave of bans on Xbox Live over modded 360 consoles, and while it has decided to remain mum on specific figures, it was quick to remind consumers that piracy is illegal and subject to consequences.

"While we don't comment on specific numbers, Microsoft's commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of the Xbox LIVE community remains a top priority," a Microsoft spokesperson told VG247.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and modifying their Xbox 360 console violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live."

LordMarius5276d ago

Translation: We are falling behind in sales, so we need our bots to rebuy our console so it look as if we are extending our community and the 360 is still relevant

Darkeyes5276d ago

Lol my friend modded his 360 to accommodate an intercooler and he got banned. Never seen someone shout at a M$ employee so much in my life lol (that too he bought MW2 a day before LMAO). As much as I appreciate a fight against piracy, M$ should really not ban people for modding their consoles to save them from RROD after it's out of warranty.

Greywulf5276d ago

They know all the banned kids are going to buy more consoles.

darthv725276d ago

If someone has swapped the fans out for better ones or if they removed the heatsinks to put on better thermal paste. Are these forms of "modding" considered ban-able?

Same goes for the hdd. Can they really tell what size/type of hdd you have attached to the system? I guess they have a way of detecting if the dvdrom has been flashed.

IdleLeeSiuLung5276d ago

It would be simply a PR nightmare if something like that would happen and you would have it plastered all over the news.

crck5276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

@1.2 I have no idea how they can tell if someone changed the heatsink or what not. Maybe if the aftermarket cooler is pulling more power from the system then standard? Or maybe they can detect that the dvd-rom has been unplugged and reseated?

As for the HDD I believe each one has a unique key built into the drive's file system. When people hacked it to put in their own drive they all downloaded the same key or something to that effect.

BTW is it confirmed that they are banning 360's that had one of these modded hard drives? That seems a bit harsh considering the ridiculous prices. I bought a used 120 gb off ebay for $75 and I still felt ripped off. At $150 MS is simply gouging their base.

Darkeyes5276d ago

Oh ya, he even modded it for a larger HDD, so that might be the real issue. But he never has pirated games thats for sure..

starvinbull5276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

Fact is that M$'s machine isn't robust enough to support modding or altering the way it works, looks or runs. Coupled with a massive bill for the RROD they can't afford to allow simple, safe and perfectly honest modifications.

Counter this with Sony who openly encourage owners of PS3s to swap out the hard drive for a bigger one if the need takes them, not to mention the addition of compatibilty of linux with all PS3s and the implications that brings.

Much like the PSP, a hard core of people make piracy look like a very bad thing for everyone not engaging in it.

Look at all those disagrees I got back then.
MS only allowing authorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices was an anti-piracy tactic after all huh.

starvinbull5276d ago

As a means righting an injustice you get one bubble vote and one agree from me.

I never disagreed at the time by the way.

MS is right at combating piracy.

you should have followed MS' terms.

LordMarius5276d ago

if they wanted to combat piracy, then they should have made a console that couldnt be easily modded, did they? nope

Godmars2905276d ago

Even if those terms mean that your 360 will break down or hems you into buying an exclusive and expensive HDD?

As much as effort MS is going to deal with piracy its sad that they didn't put as into making sure the thing worked right in the first place. Put solid blocks in place, not speed bumps that hacker got over within hours.

Unicron5276d ago

While I agree with you in a sense Godmar, in that the 360's build quality is sh1t, I actually agree with them banning users. Piracy sucks, and SOMETHING has to be done about it.

Christopher5276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

Microsoft is doing the right thing here and I support them 100%. Just make sure their process is as full proof as possible and make sure there's an easy way to appeal to the process in case it may include innocent persons.

As far as building a console that isn't capable of being modded... not possible. Even if you utilize a medium and medium reading device that exists in no other system, people will take the time to take it apart and build methods for modding it. I mean, honestly, you got people taking the time to custom mod consoles to look like swords, laptops, fridges, coffee tables, and more.

360's mod rate is based on its popularity primarily. Same thing with DS mods. More people that use it, the greater the chance it will be broken for the purpose of the individuals desiring to get something for nothing.

NecrumSlavery5276d ago

This is BS. This where control takes over and fairness is lost.

Reminds me of all those bans from WOW for silly reasons. If you get a good lawyer who can right a smooth terms of agreement that people will sign, then you have them by the balls.

M$ said it clears as day "...You gamers are stupid and we now own your ass....love Bill.."

That's a major part in why I love Playstation

Gen0ne5276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

Well said.

Feral Gamer5276d ago

So you're saying that just because a console is easy to mod, it's ok? Should you steal something or commit any other offense because they make it easy to do?

Godmars2905276d ago (Edited 5276d ago )

Except people are being punished for trying to compensate for shortcomings in the 360's design as well as in defense of piracy and HDD exclusivity. Without and warning at that.

If MS is going to continue to ban consoles for that reason, the very least MS should do is advertise the fact on XBL.

@MEGATRON D:
NecrumSlavery might be talking about the time Bill Gates once threatened to put Halo 3 out against the PS3's launch a year before it came out. To me, and I guess to others, that spoke volumes about MS's commitment to quality. As much as the RROD.

Gen0ne5276d ago

Too bad you had to elaborate for him though.

Christopher5276d ago

Actually, when you sign up for XBLA, it's in the ToS about modding the console. This is available in print with the game manual and you must accept it when you create a new account.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

jznrpg3h ago

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv723h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast5h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood4h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK2h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

gold_drake44m ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.
