Sony Says PS3 Will Sell Tens of Millions

Sony has come out and stated in the past that they believe the PS3 can be as successful as the PlayStation 2 was, and they still back that belief.

Sony also thought they would sell out all 6 million PS3's at the end of March. Which they clearly didn't.

Now just over half of that...

Thanks for the backup Bladestar. I don't forget what I've read. The General, you clearly do, like Bladestar quoted also:

"Sony, which recently pushed back the launch of its console to November, said it expects sales during the first four to five months after launch to be about 6 million units."

Sony said they would ship out 6 million units by march which was not achieved because they only shipped just above 5 million consoles. Get your facts straight.

Anyways, Ps3 will sell 10s of millions during the 10 year life span of the ps3. Hopefully, the huge sales will be sparked this fall when the good games and even better movies start coming out. It is then that people will be able to use the multi-functional ps3 for its main purposes, Games and Entertainment. I still can't wait for the firmware update 2.0 to come out.

O well, until then, back to gears.

what SONY says or predicts. It's not like they would say anything NEGATIVE. These days, Sony is known for promises and Potential, remember that one?. Yes I will never forget. Neither will I be a fool this GEN.

Just Cut the Damn PRICE Sony and hurry, or Fast forward to 2008, when I feel like the PS3 might be worth a PURCHASE, or even better yet, make Square bring out FFVII:REMAKE this year and you will get my money a lot sooner.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves told the Web site he was worried less about moving units at the PS3's launch than he was about maintaining sales after early adopters had purchased their systems.

David Reeves - "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games," he told the site.

Oh I never forget...I think he should of worried about the "LATTER". I had the option of being an early adopter, and chickened out.

Really I don't care about how many they can POTENTIALLY sell. How many they are CURRENTLY NOT selling, due to their strategy this time around, is more important for THEM and thier relationship with DEVELOPERS.

It only matters to me if a game does not come to the PS3 because developers feel like, not enough gamers have it, but then again we have ALTERNATIVES or should I say a really back up console. So no complaints here. Oh yeah Cut the Price..

If Sony wants my love again they've gotta stop talking and start doing. Start releasing some kickass games, fix the controller cutting out issue and stop touting SIXAXIS until we can actually see what it does. It wouldn't hurt to get a few big companies (Square, Konami for example) to come out and accurately confirm exclusivity for your console.

I've heard so much about potential but I've gotta see results if a company is going to want me to shell out that much cash for their system. I think Sony should be very careful about what they're releasing later this year... if their untested exclusives aren't as absolutely killer-awesome as they're claiming, it's not going to help the cause.

Given how long sony plans to keep the Ps3 running I wouldn't doubt if they sold tens of millions of units, but to expect a domination like the ps2. Well I just don't see that happening this gen.

All 3 companies are laying down some great systems. Ps3 has put out a monster machine with lots of potential. Ps3 had a a much slower start than I expected but I still keep faith in the system to deliver down the road.

MS has laid out a console that is giving the ps3 a good run for its money, and im pleased with how well they have been executing their system, as I didn't care for their system last gen, I didn't expect them to do this well. I have earned much more respect for MS this gen.

Although I'm not to fond of the Wii their sales are staggering and you can't deny them from the current looks. Wii is definately not another gamecube.

This is in my opinion the most heated console war yet and a great time to be a gamer. But in the end only time will tell so we'll see whats up down the road.

lol.....ok. hasnt every major sysytem sold tens of millions??? clarification would be nice. do they expect 30 mil or 100 mil. i know gamers have their doubts about sonys new system but its only been on the streets for about 7 months and VGwars are not won in a half year. 2 years from now when both systems have price drops one of these sytems is going to take off and sony has the reputation to do damage in the long run.

We have some amateur analyst on this site. Its funny how people try to predict the future based on their particular bias but if you look at Sony's track record two generations running it overwhelmingly points toward them being able to make the PS3 work.
We live in a society of instant gratification but the fact of the matter is that good games take time to create and the video game scene so to speak has changed. All the hype aside the PS3 is very different than what MOST developers are used to, but that by no means signifies its demise just because some of you really wish it would.
Sony needs to find its place in the current market and they need to work on selling the benefits of the PS3 to developers. But it would be silly to think that a multi million dollar corporation like Sony will just sit by and allow itself to languish, but a story of hardship for those that were once on top is always a good way to attract attention kinda like a really bad car accident.
E3 is looming and I know I am anxious to see what transpires, and so are all of you, and the extreme hate a lot of you display for Sony strikes me as disingenuous. It would do all you "XBOTS" well to give Sony the same leeway you gave MS when the 360 was released because I see more good games on the horizon than the 360 had in that same time period, lest you want to end up putting your foot in your mouth.
And before you XBOTS try to bring up the HYPE that Sony or Sony supporters did in the name of business save it, while MS might not have said the same thing about the 360 they have engaged in their own HYPE activities in the past. Such is business.

The possibility of the PS3 doing what its phenomenal counter part the PS2 isn't likely for a few years. like I have said before on this site ganing consoles are trendy and one console can never stay on top for more than atleast two rounds (history has shown that) The 360 and the Wii is just more popular this round, it's not like the PS3 is a horrible console (my 360 fanboy self can't help but laugh at that) You guys will see some good games in 2008 and 2009 but right now it's all about the 360 and the Wii. IMO What you PS3 fans should be doing is writing Sony and tell them to mirror Xbox Live, it could be a big jump for the PS3 and get some of the multiplayer gamers to buy one (just a thought)

I'll betting Sony barely makes 50,000 units sold this month!!! LMAO Every month has gotten worse and worse for the PS3 (As predicted because only common sense tells us.) Then the following month after that it will only be like 45,000 or something!

How Sony figures to reach even 10 million is beyond me. No 3rd party developer with any financial sense will release a game with such a ridiculous low install base.

And for anybody betting Sony's Apples on 1st party games, remember that these next games are first generation IP's which history has shown us NEVER move systems. It takes proven heavy hitting franchises, AKA Final Fantasy, Metal Gear to do that and by the time they release in 08 it will be WAY to late.

1. sony won't drop price anytime soon, hardware costs are still too much.
2. a few games no one has ever heard of aren't going to get people to shell out 600 dollars, so stop saying it will. ask the average joe if they know of any good ps3 games. they'll look at you like your insane. ask the average joe about 360 games. their response will be-halo 3-forza 2-gears of war-graw 2- rb6 vegas-fight night3, and those are just a few- people know and love these games for being on the 360, and dont recognize some of them as being released on the ps3.

that Sony makes these claims. For one you can go online and see how many units they are selling every week, or at least every month. I don't think todays consumer is as ill informed as Sony would like to think they are. I think at a $600 price point people will research at least a little bit and go more with pricing and available games. Ok, lets say for the sake of argument that there are 20 million gamecube owners, 24 million xbox owners, and 100 million ps2 owners. Now being somewhat logical I would say that pretty much guarantees the wii will sell at least 20 million, xbox 360 will sell at least 24 million. I will say that the likelihood of the ps3 selling 100 million is way out of hand but think of it like this. If the wii fanbase doubles, if the 360 fanbase doubles and if the ps3 fanbase reduces by half all 3 consoles sell in the 40-50 million range. Would anyone call that figure a failure?
