PC -> DLNA -> PS3 -> Remote Play -> PSP Confirmed

With the release of the PSP's firmware update 3.50, remote capabilities between the PS3 and PSP from anywhere in the world is now possible. Yet more exciting is that with the new PS3's ability to stream from a DLNA server on your PC, you can now access your PC files on your PSP anywhere in the world, via the PS3...

if you are not using vista, you will need some sort of DLNA compliant media server...wmp 11 works even with xp, but alot of peeps don't even use that...but if you use it, as far as I can tell you have to let WMP know where your files are...the easiest way to just to create a library of whatever you want to share...and leave it at that...as long as WMP knows where the files are...it can stream them as a DLNA server...With Vista the ps3 will be allowed to look all over your hard drive though...so even files that are not in your WMP library will be shown on the ps3...but there are free trials of neroMedia, and a few others (i believe newer versions of itunes are DLNA compliant also)...those should work just as well...

One thing to be sure of is in your network settings you need to find the ps3 on your network...its a "unknown device" as far as windows is concerned...and make sure you set file and media sharing to "allow" or "on" (vista/xp depending)...then make sure password file sharing is set to off...the ps3 has no password protocol for windows...so windows will be waiting for ever if that is set to on...

It took me a little while to get it to work...and you will need to reboot the ps3 the first time you finally get all the sharing stuff turned on...the ps3 will do some server adjustment stuff, and put in a profile...after that you won't need to reboot either the ps3 or the pc...when they are both on, it will always show up...

Nero for mp4s (very clean quality, but i can't get the avi transcoding to work)
and i use tversity for my anime addictions..tversity plays the avis very nicely and i can't complain. I just finished streaming the whole dragon ball z series and i'm downloading GT and another anime series "teknoman". Man i am LOVING this streaming thing..now i can take it to a psp..

good job sony..now give us games!

i think i didnt set the password file sharing to off. that may be whats holding it up.

It's the easiest to use and detects the PS3 instantly..all you do is go to options and allow WMP to share files. Then you select the folders you wish to share and voila.

yeah sorry...I haven't set it up with xp yet...just with my notebook that has Vista...I forgot about having to activate sharing in WMP 11 too...vista will share whether WMP wants you to or not...

I am still waiting for the access the ps3 anywhere with a pc...I don't own a psp...never cared for portables since the game gear...I might eventually get one if the price drops again...but I want to able to access videos and stuff from the ps3 through my work pc...

That probably won't happen for a while...and its not really that big of a deal...but yeah, this DLNA stuff is great...I can't wait to stream files back to the pc too...back up the game saves and other ps3 HDD stuff through your network...thats about as good as it gets...

Turn it on, heats up and circuits flex, Turn it off, cools down and circuits shrink, repeat often and you get circuit and circuit board stressing.

I leave my PC on 24/7, 365. The ONLY thing I've had to worry about is dust, very important to dust your PC.

Maybe Cyber's never been inside a corporation Control room like Charles Schwab, Merril Lynch, Progressive, Fidelity, Citicorp, or JP Morgan Chase (I've spent a lot of time in ALL of them), their servers run 24/7, 365 days a year. Keep your air cool and the server's dust free and you have normal hardware degredation with regular lifespans.

Don't worry, if it's about the PS3 in general, he posts negative comments regardless what the news is, or how uninformed he may be.

I was slow to do it at first...but all through May I have been leaving it on more and more...probably 18 hours a day...

and yeah, who turns their pc off all the time? I remember it used to be that constantly booting and closing it down was harder on the hardware then just leaving it on...I reboot my machines only about once a week, if that...

To add to comment 6.3 above -- Yes, I have two PS3's and I leave them on almost constantly like my Vaio. If I'm at home on n4g or working on something else or I'm outta the house -- they stay folding and I feel better for doing so. They only turn off if I'm going to transport them to a gaming site.

Its not that its the fact that the PS3 eats a LOT of power! by leaving it on its costing you a lot of money per year in electricity then leaving your PC on as well is going to cost you loads!

Also since the PS3 does get extremely hot by leaving it on for basically forever you are infact causing harsh wear on the components meaning that their life expectancy is shortened greatly.

Why must the PSP go through the PS3 then to the PC? Seems pointless and stupid and its another 'gimmick'.

I am an electronics technician in the Navy. I work on a lot of different electronic and computer equipment on submarines, and most of them have nothing more than cooling fans. What you say about leaving these machines on for long periods of time is BS. It sounds to me like a "well I read somewhere" argument.

Trust me, some people here actually have jobs pertaining to electronics, and are not easily fooled by comments such as these.

still not sure what point you're trying to prive here. If you think it's highly recommended that we not leave our PC's and PS3's on due to heat / thermal issues or because of energy saving issues? I mean should we turn them off and leave them off more frequently due to the heat or the energy burn?

Studies have already shown http://www.twitchguru.com/2... that the 3.2 GHz Cell processor and the RSX graphics chip put out about as much as three 60 watt light bulbs at full bore; so if you're just folding (1 program at idle wattage which is less than the XBox 360's) - one is not doing any more damage than leaving the house with a couple of security lights on for protection, ya know?

My experience is that Media Player 11 is by far the quickest and best way to share and stream content to the PS3 (and PSP). This works great from both Windows XP and Vista. I have Vista on my laptop and XP on my desktop.

I also have Nero 7, I use this only for streaming media that is not supported on the PS3, like AVI. Everything else is coming from Media Player 11, it's much quicker.

Man I love this upgrade for the PSP and PS3. Way to go Sony. No hurry up with the games already ;)

Unless you have a very large video collection. WMP11 is by far the easiest to set up. A codec pack can allow WMP to play .MP4 audio. Nero MediaHome has been recognized to be very unstable. And I believe that TVersity requires UPnP to be turned on which creates conflicts for those who have WRT54G routers.

I have Media Player 11 enabled for sharing to my PS3 but I get Unsupported Format when viewing my mpegs. I can get the streaming done through TVersity but it seems like WMP 11 is by far the most efficient when transfering data from my PC to the PS3. Any suggestions on getting my mpegs viewed through WMP 11 like I'm currently doing with my 360?

but its kind of crazy that you can access your PC anywhere via your ps3 now. i know other PCs can do it via ftp or gateway, but the playstation family connectivity is growing, which is a good thing.

They need to make it so that u can remotely turn on the ps3 and start remote play, also turning the ps3 off remotely with the psp, because i dont want to keep my ps3 on for a couple of days strait while i am away, if sony could get that too work, remote play would be amazing!
