Uru: Ages Beyond Myst was to be a realization of the Myst dream -- an interconnected set of virtual worlds that gamers could explore and share at will. This ambitious sequel to Myst and Riven was markedly different from its predecessors. The virtual ages in Uru were rendered in real-time 3-D -- a first for a series that had formerly relied on a point-and-click, slide-show approach to adventure gaming.

Players controlled customizable avatars (in third- or first-person) though these dusty, abandoned worlds, attempting to grok the puzzles they found when they put palm to page.
