Sony denies drop in PS3 production

Platform holder shoots down analyst's speculation on console's price.
SCEE has refuted suggestions that it is reducing production of PS3 – and has told MCV that there is no link between a potential price drop and any temporary change in manufacturing.

The news comes after a release from industry analyst Lazard Capital Markets this week, which stated that, 'Reports from Asia suggest that Sony has reduced production of PS3s, at least temporarily, which may suggest that a price cut is less likely this year.'

I don't think this is true. The PS3 is selling like hot cakes and it's blowing the 360 out of the water in terms of sells and games. (rolling eyes)... at least that's what we hear from Sony fans around here.

When have you heard that. I think I've seen the argument made that outside of US the PS3 is selling better than the 360, but in all seriousness I haven't come across a post that says something like what you said. I always see... wait till (fill in blank) comes out.

OH man you didn't hear? The PS3 is DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are slowing production because they admit that the 360 is way cooler and that all the really cool dudes have it...by fall Sony will completely stop production...and publically admit defeat to Moore and Gates...

Facts are that Ms was to have 15 million shipped bye the end of 2006 yet bye the end of the middle of the year it was cut to 12...then it was cut to 10...this is all in the first year of the production of the 360....so who isnt selling well agin...a 600 dollar game system worldwide still sells better then te 360...plain and simple

They denied the original launch date; "We're still on track for a Spring '06 release.."

They denied analysts estimation of the PS3 costs.

They denied the delay was due to the bluray player.

do you feel bad, when playing Motorstorm, Resistence, Virtua Fighter 5 or Oblivion, because 2 years ago Sony lied? You now can`t play games because of that ?

Why would they slow down the production if they ever plan to make profit with PS3? Slowing down production would kill it for sure.

there would not be a price drop until *the* games are released because sony know that they would sell more consoles when the games are released and would still make more money by keeping its original price for the moment.

Ok i think you need to learn some economics, when the demand goes down so deep like the ps3's, then its time for a price drop. Keeping the price so high its only gonna push the customers even further away . If they are going to be waiting for the *games*, then they are going to loose all this time, and in this industry time its money my friend.

Basically, it's a simple economic basis of supply and demand.
If there is less demand, supply will follow shortly with reduction
of manufacturing. Also, I think Sony is too arrogant to acknowledge
that their pricing structure is too high for the average consumers
(i.e. saving money for Little Arkham's braces or a PS3).

Oh I think Sony's aware of what they're doing as far as pricing goes. As much as MS is aware of hardware failure rates, and Nintendo is aware of the mighty power of their DeathChuck. :)

Seriously, these companies know exactly what they're doing -- whether or not it pays off in the short term or long term is really the question. (In some cases it's already been answered.)

when demand is low production is low. If Sony wouldn't have tried to force Bluray on the public, the PS3 would be selling like hotcakes, most likely at at a 3 or $400 dollar price point.

obviously i dont have inside information, but i know the PS3 isnt selling very well in Japan, i know USA is mainly MS' territory, and i KNOW that in the UK that there not flying off the shelfs infact alot are being returned (check recent news) putting all of this into account i do believe that there most likely to have slowed production. oh and also Sony or anyother company would admit this as being true, especially as this would make people think, hold on dont buy one yet wait for a price cut etc.
