Call of Duty – Can Games be too Immersive?

Koku Gamer writes: "With all of the controversy around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it is an appropriate time to discuss immersion in video games. It was recently revealed through leaked footage that terrorist attacks would be featured in the game and while Activision has said that the clip does not portray the game accurately, some feel that immersion of this kind is in bad taste. Frankly, Modern Warfare 2 is not the first and will not be the last title to depict a terrorist attack and it is only being targeted because of the lofty sales it will achieve."

Story is alright, for the most part in RPG's it's awesome to have a great story, but in shooters it's hard to engage in the story.

I beg to differ, Killzone 2 and Halo 1 2 and 3 were both stellar SP experiences.

MW2 put in some sad parts with one of the characters, i wanted to be sad at that part but i just didnt know anything about em other than that his costume looked cool. so it kinda killed the moment.

The aiming, movement and response from guns has a very "arcade" style feeling that makes it too easy to hit a target and less immersive. As far as immersion goes, Killzone 2 with HUD turned off is the best I;ve played. The movement, aiming, recoil, shooting all feel very realistic and create a very immersive experience.

CoD's easier gameplay works better for a wider audience as it caters to both pro players and noobs, which is probably why Call of Duty is more popular. But for hardcore shooter fans like mr, Killzone 2 is more fun.

Also, have any Australian MW2 players here been finding only laggy servers? It seems like only 1 out of 10 games are playable, but I can't quit the bad ones because it will count as a loss.

God article. I sorta do feel that the whole MW2 thing is going a bit far, but then again I've yet to play so I'll just save judgment.

Hey how else you going to make impact and raise hype? Do something controversial, like they did with the terrorist scene.

A lot of things are done for shock value and not just video games. Take a look at the Saw or Hostel movies. Those are extremely graphic yet I can't help but watch each sequel.

Video games always seem to get the short end of the stick. I think terrorism is a threat in society today but people shouldn't shy away from it. Portraying it in a video game is only a natural evolution. If you see it on the news every day, it'll be incorporated into various media eventually.

I think that the game is rated M for a reason. There are some graphic parts involving terrorists. It's up to parents to keep it away from their children and for consumers to make the right choice based on their morals. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it.

How immersed can you become in 6 hours of gameplay? And I'm so sick of all these "question mark" articles on N4G
