Electronic Arts posts 2Q loss, plans layoffs

NEW YORK (AP) -- Electronic Arts said Monday its loss widened in the latest quarter in what's been a difficult year for the company and the broader video game industry.

The company behind games such as "Madden NFL 10" also said Monday it is laying off 1,500 employees, or about 17 percent, to focus on games that have higher profit margins.

The fiscal second quarter's net loss was $391 million, or $1.21 a share, 26 percent wider than the loss from a year earlier.

Damn just when they start doing things right :(

What have they done right?

They have been making much better games this generation. I dont see them as the evil video game company anymore. That is now reserved for Activision.

Bioware is now owned by EA and they are doing great. Cant wait for SW TOR. Not to mention Dead Space. What a surprise that game was. And Battlefield BC2 looks freaking amazing.

Their multiplats have become better since the PS3 launched, but they're still not up to par with 360 (for most titles). Look at Orange Box, they completely butchered that game!

I still don't like them for buying out everyone, though. I think smaller companies feel intimidated by development costs so they sell out to EA. As long as the games are good, I don't mind, but I think EA should quit buying up everyone. It'll be a monopoly. *shrug*

Prepare for less game for your money from EA. I wonder if they're going to invest in a new set of cookie cutters?

I hate quarterly reports as they really don't show the bigger picture. But it is a good excuse for layoffs.

ohh man economy sucks :(. Well if EA wouldnt buy almost every company in the game industry, those people will still have those jobs maybe.

If they really wanted save money they should stop doing games for every movie that releases.... and they probably taking a big hit from NBA live no longer being good for the past 3 years.

the last NBA live I like was 2004, the gameplay felt great and was fun for me
