Xbox 360 Gamers Defecting To PS3 For Holiday Sequels?

It's coming time for the Holiday launches of anticipated multiplatform sequels -- and new data provided to Gamasutra by OTX's GamePlan Insights finds that many sequel-buyers might be switching platforms, defecting from Xbox 360 to PlayStation 3 for more than one major release.

In addition to identifying the cash-strapped consumer's most-wanted games for the holiday season, GamePlan Insights previously examined "franchise lineage," or gamer intent to purchase sequels to favorite games.

According to OTX analyst Nick Williams, data on franchise lineage highlights an interesting trend between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 SKUs for Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2, the two top-ranking titles on the latest purchase intent charts -- and also two of the titles with the strongest franchise lineage.

PS3 has all of the games this year, with the exception of the racing genre (Forza 3 undoubtedly took the crown for that this year). There's no real reason NOT to own a PS3.

deadreckoning6663268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

I have a friend whose "defecting' on Christmas. And I know another who lost his 360 in a house fire and already paid for his MW2 bundle at Gamestop. Tried ta convince him ta get a PS3, but he wouldn't listen. Oh well.

@zoks- "Better exclusives, free online, same multi-platform games as 360, and better reliability."

I agree with all that except the "better" exclusives part. Thats an OPINION and is entirely subjective. I didn't chose a PS3 for the "better" exclusives, I chose the PS3 for the free online, reliability, and the fact that it has a web browser which is what I MAINLY use it for. I watch free movies and tv shows on it all the time. As far as exclusives go I would recommend a PS3 to someone based on the simple fact that future GTA games will be PS3 exclusives, no more no less.

I'm frankly more interested in Modern Warfare 2 over any PS3 exclusive this year so PS3 exclusives don't concern me too much. PS3 fanboys will disagree, but thats the mentality of MOST PS3 owners and by saying that there wrong is called "forcing ur opinion" which is for 6 yr olds if ya ask me.

Lifendz3268d ago

are probably going to make the system their main gaming rig and avoid paying the Live fee. Unless you're an avid user of party chat or cross game chat, there really is no reason to keep paying that fee.

blackpanther253268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

so do I lol

mikeslemonade3268d ago

Assasins Creed 2 is a rental. Why would you buy that game?

StanLee3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

Alot of my friends and I own both consoles and a few of them, their gold subscription has expired and they're getting Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3. If more of us committed to playing on the PS3, I think we would all do the same since my sub ends in February, but most of us will be playing on XBL. From the number of preorders for the XBox 360 version verses the PS3 version. I'd say the number of persons switching is relatively small.

sikbeta3268d ago

Lifendz is right, new owners will make the PS3 their main gaming Console and/or the only

The "holiday sequels" + the current excellent line-up of exclusives this year + the excellent exclusives for the next year = more than enough to buy/support the PS3

darthv723268d ago

I can see many gamers actually crossing the line and owning both or all three systems. Nothing wrong with that. It just means you have all the bases covered when it comes to exclusive titles on the respected console. Multiplatform ones...depends on personal preferences (controller, friends, online service...).

I like having the choice of what to play. It definitely means I wont be left out when the next big release hits, regardless of platform. When it comes to sequels, I am a loyalist to the series. If the first one came out on one system and the second is available to multi, I will pick the same system I got the original on.

You never know when devs will throw a bone to those who have the first one on the same system.

SeNiLe9113268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

Other than that I would not have one yet and now that I have played it for a few months would not recommend it to anyone thinking of getting a 360 or has a 360 unless you get it FREE you won’t be happy, not 100% atleast. I have finished both Uncharted and Uncharted 2 campaigns, it was good but the online for Uncharted 2 is just so so and the controller, it blows compared to the Xbox 360 controller.

The PS3 fanboys say there’s no lag on the PS3. Yeah right!!! The lag is very frustrating in this game. You can kill someone and be killed so easy if your back is to the enemy and don't see that there about to shot you. By the time you take cover you're dead making it look like you were shot through a wall. This happens all the time. Other then the lag it's pretty fun but the other thing is 99% don't have mics so the team aspect of the game goes out the window. Also, it's a little hard making friends when there is no communication. I can see why all the PS3 fanboys would say to add me here on N4G where Xbox 360 gamers don't need that advertising. Adding a friend on the PS3 is a joke! And no, you don’t have to add me, I won’t be on it much once MW2 is out, it’s an Xbox 360 Exclusive to me.

And yes I have a PS3:

I’m not dogging the PS3, the games are great on it but the PS3 fanboys ruined it for me saying there’s no lag. And the online is just so so. You truly get what you pay for.

I will keep it for the Blue-Ray and get a few games that are exclusive maybe but mostly play free PS3 rentals from the library if I do play it. I guess the PS3 isn’t for everyone. I can go on and on about what I don’t like about it but will save some for another day.

PS. Why are there only 7 or 8,000 gamers playing Uncharted 2 at a given time? That is sad!

EDIT: Sorry for those that Disagree, I speak as an Xbox Live gamer of 6 years and have played more hours than most gamers do their whole life. What I said above is how I feel and thought I would share with all since the PS3 fanboys practically own N4G.

Maddens Raiders3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

that "Blue-ray" working out for ya? You really need to get a life poser and sell your PS3 to someone that deserves it (yes, the imaginary one in the corner).

I mean I know the title of this article cuts d e e p into your very being, but trolling is better left to those old xbutts who are at least half-assed good at it.

And trying to dog on Uncharted 2..? lol tsk tsk tsk...hell of a game isn't it...? I know it hurts to look at it & play it because you've (((never had it so good)))... online sucks..? lol ok (lemme check that metacritic score again..)

a/w your "senility" filled rant..was at the very least comically entertaining...! 8D

LONEWOLF2313268d ago

I know i am getting the PS3 version of Assassins Creed 2.
Dont know i just feel that my PS3 needs some lovin.

TheAntiFanboy3268d ago

"Better exclusives" will always, ALWAYS BE SUBJECTIVE.

SeNiLe9113268d ago

And the rating on metacritic is not going to show the lag that is, because there probable were 40 people playing at the time since the reviewers reviewed before the masses (if you want to call 8,000 online players masses).

You say "(yes, the imaginary one in the corner)." I guess you failed to click the link to my PSN. "Maddens Raiders" you FAIL!

Maybe you should click it now and see I do in fact own a PS3

And how am I trolling, I own all three systems this gen. How about you? I just posted a comment that getting a PS3 did the complete opposite for me. I Like the Xbox 360 better. If you have a problem with that then you have a real problem and should seek help.

I was not dogging on Uncharted 2, just the online. If you look at my past comments you will see I rip Gears of War many times because of the online. It's the way it is and the ways it's going to be.

ThanatosDMC3267d ago (Edited 3267d ago )

MS better get on the ball or else N4G will become a boring place... Alan Wake better deliver... but they're all ready starting to cut back on their initial ideas.

dragunrising3267d ago

Did the fanboy's leave? Good :-) The article lacks any scientific merit at all. Any survey can claim a degree of error of +/- (insert #) however random opinion polls suffer from horrible validity problems. That is not to say that the survey could hold some truth, however we could just as easily put together a survey that proves the contrary; same problem.

By the by, did everyone miss the Amazon preorder #'s and vgchartz preorder listings? The 360 version of COD: MW2 is selling DOUBLE the number of copies as the PS3 version (amazon). Vgchartz has the preorder number at 3:1. Preorder statistics are a lot more revealing in regards to purchase intent.

SL1M DADDY3267d ago

No, you're a fanboy posing as a PS3 owner and your antics are not getting past anybody here. Please stop making yourself look any more stupid than you already are and head over to the open zone or just STFU. Your story screams of talking points right out of the Xbox Fanboy camp from 2007... Try getting up to speed with the PS3 before making yourself look more silly.

MAiKU3268d ago

FiftyFourPointTwo3268d ago

Play B3yond or Jump Into Failure.

You decide. :)

cyborg69713268d ago

Everyone has been waiting for the ps to drop in price even the bots. How could you not have one.

NewZealander3268d ago

if its a good game i dont care what console its on, but 360 wasnt keeping me satisfied this year so im glad i picked up a slim, its given me plenty to catch up on, already ive played ratchet and clank heavenly sword and both uncharted games, and plenty to look forward to, but people shouldnt hate another console, fair enough to dislike MS or whatever, im a bit pissed they pass up games like kameo 2 to focus on natal, but next year is looking great for them too.

give the devs credit, because splinter cell, mass effect 2, alan wake, halo reach, crackdown 2 and heaps more exclusives next year will keep people playing.

talltony3267d ago

I wish all my friends just owned a ps3 then I wouldnt have to keep supporting the 360 just to play with them.

zoks3103268d ago

Better exclusives, free online, same multi-platform games as 360, and better reliability. I went through 2 360's in just 3 years while i'm still on my frist PS3.

MAiKU3268d ago

Well there was one of each systems in the house. Guess what happened?

Lifendz3268d ago

that's a pretty big reason. Alan Wake looks cool. And you know MS isn't shy about throwing money around for timed exclusivity. I know hardly none of you liked GTA4 but I did and I gotta admit I'm a little irked at not being able to play the DLC cuz I don't own a 360.

Then again Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, God of War III, etc etc are all making it easier.

RememberThe3573268d ago

No lie, my 80gb PS3 is the heater in my room. People don't believe it until they're actually in my room and the PS3 starts to heat it up. I've had girls start undressing because it's gotten my room so hot.

SupaPlaya3268d ago

that reminds me to turn off the AC next time I invite girl(s) over. I'll just tell them my AC stopped working.

I had the MGS4 bundle initially but I returned it and got the new 80GB with the smaller die instead as the new machine is quieter and generate less heat.

sikbeta3268d ago

Nobody is recognised, famous and rich like you on this site XD

I'll be really mad if something happen to my PS3, probably go and kick my neighbor's @$$ without any excuse, so I can't have a console that at some time will die Inevitably lol

callahan093268d ago

The PS3 definitely makes the room hot. It's amazing the things don't overheat. My PS3 never has a hitch, but it definitely blows a lot of hot air out of those side vents. I keep the window open in my room when I play it.

monkey6023268d ago

My room is the warmest in my house due to my PS3 and TV.

Not a bad thing considering how cold it is around my parts at the moment :P

@Mista T

I would have agreed with you if this was 2008 but I've had a broken 360 for the majority of this year and still need 1 decent reason to get it fixed. It's staying that way until Mass Effect 2 comes out

It may be that people's Xbox Live accounts are expiring and have no reason to renew because PSN offers the same experience for free...

PandemicPrawn03268d ago

Just to get off topic for a moment I wonder how long Sony can keep the PSN free?

They must be looking at the profits XBL is making for Microsoft and be thinking long and hard about it. I mean it must have some kind of running costs.

Can anyone here tell me if Sony make anything on PSN or are they absorbing the costs at the moment?

I think it's just a matter of time before they have to start charging for it, the more they improve the service the more it must cost to run.

thedisagreefairy3268d ago

then ppl would ditch it for xbox live.

and then sony would lose one of their biggest selling points.

theyre growth would definently decline quickly.

just for the simple fact that online play is considered to b the 360's top strength.

sony is going to let us keep our psn free.

im not paying any money just to play a game online (which is why i have a ps3).

PandemicPrawn03268d ago

I understand why Sony don't want to change for PSN.

As a free service it gives them both the advantage of a sales point and it makes XBL look bad buy comparison.

I just wonder how long Sony can keep on absorbing the costs involved with running it.

I think at some point in the future they will have to start charging for it.

raztad3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

If Sony decides to charge for PSN, my PS3 would be used off line and my computer for online.

ico923268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

its because of the xbl subscription

-Seven-3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

Sony makes tons of money from HOME.

Virtual economy

Although the service itself can be used free of charge, premium content is available to purchase from various stores in the shopping complex. Users browse and pay for items such as virtual clothing and furniture by accessing a shop and using its PlayStation Store interface. Items are paid for in real currency using funds from the user's PlayStation Network Wallet.[35][36] Alongside content designed by SCE, real-world companies are also able to sell virtual goods through their own stores in Home. For example, Diesel and Ligne Roset are both represented in Home with their own stores where users can purchase virtual items based on their companies’ own clothing and furniture designs respectively.[37]

Advertising is prominent in Home’s public spaces. Currently, this is primarily PlayStation focused although other video gaming-related brands are also represented. Sony currently streams most advertising from ‘their’ Home servers. Most advertising is targeted to specific regional audiences although it is also possible to target particular users.[13]

One of the ways Sony has used advertising in Home is with pre-order bonuses for PS3 games. The first Home pre-order bonus was for the PS3 exclusive Killzone 2. Users in the North American Home who pre-ordered Killzone 2 from received free I.S.A. and Helghast costumes for their avatar.[38] Also, on February 16, 2009, if users located a Helghast soldier in the North American Home, they were granted access to the Killzone 2 demo.[39] Another pre-order bonus occurred with the PS3 exclusive inFamous. Users in the North American Home who pre-ordered inFamous from received a Reaper costume for their avatar.[40] Also, if users of the North American Home downloaded the demo of inFamous and beat it, users received a Cole costume for their avatar on June 18, 2009 and still can continue to do so.[41] The next pre-order occurred with Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. If users pre-ordered the "Space Package" for the game from Game Crazy, the users received a a PlayStation Home Avatar Skin, which is just a t-shirt for their avatar.[42] A current pre-order bonus is for MAG. If users pre-order MAG from, users will receive an S.V.E.R. PlayStation Home Personal Space.[43] The European and Japanese versions of Home also had chances to get the pre-order costumes as well but through different pre-order promotions and events.

PandemicPrawn03268d ago

I don't own a PS3 so I had no idea how they make an income from a free service without any kind of user fees.

sounds like a pretty good way to do it to me.

Thanks again.

-Seven-3268d ago (Edited 3268d ago )

online was not a big plan of the console life.

Sony had no choice put to include and try to better online for the PS3. Some of you might hate Microsoft but I am actually glad that Sony has some competition. This way it forces them to provide better service and games for us the gamers.

The next gen will probably be different for Sony and they will charge for online because the service will much better.

-Seven-3268d ago

I love both my 360 and PS3 but I don't respect Microsoft for charging online because they basically do the same thing as Sony with advertisement ect, so no need to charge us the gamer. I still play on live more that PSN because of party chat but as soon as Sony includes that I will not be paying for live.

LONEWOLF2313268d ago

Hell yeah!

And not only that you can get better connection speeds on PSN and its FREE!

TheAntiFanboy3268d ago

If you were smart and knew anything about the 360, the experience isn't the same.

Console fanboys are too ignorant to make any admission to the opposition's favor, aren't they.

-Seven-3267d ago

but for some reason when I play gears of war 2 I lag like crazy and when i play Resistance 2 I have zero lag, don't know if it has to do with the game or online service.

the games available for the PC just dont compare to whats available on consoles

im not gonna talk nonsense about PC gaming costing £500+ but it is expensive

Yeah, because I can play Uncharted, R&C, KZ2, Demon's Souls, LBP, Motorstorm, Brutal Legend, GoW3, GT5, Heavy Rain, ModNation Racers, inFAMOUS, and The Last "FU*KIN" Guardian on a PC.
