Yoshida: PS3 Motion Controller Is 'Hardware Platform' For Sony

The upcoming PlayStation 3 motion controller will not just be an extra gaming peripheral, but a "platform product" that will have a variety of applications, says Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida.

"We are still in the very early days of motion control development," Yoshida told Gamasutra as part of a larger interview. The Sony veteran took the reins of SCE Worldwide Studios from former head Phil Harrison in May last year.

"We have had talks with company management where we discussed whether we should approach [the motion controller] as a peripheral or a platform, and we agree that this has huge potential -- so we position this as a hardware platform," he said.

That right there is possibly a hint that it won't be out in spring 2010. Who wants to bet its going to be delayed?

Edit: Actually, I thought about it again. And it probably won't be delayed. I just thought it looked a little incomplete a E3. But when I thought it over, it could be done by spring 2010

Probably just means Wii is the first real use of motion controls. 3 years is still early in its life cycle.

They are saying that there is a lot left that can be done with motion controllers. Its still a pretty new technology in gaming like pennywise said. 3 years is not enough time to completely master a technology (precisely why playstation consoles have longevity)

"That right there is possibly a hint that it won't be out in spring 2010"

Nope, that can't be it. Sony has been working with Motion Controls well before the Wii. I've seen the developer videos of it running on the PS2, I think it was in a N4G posted article awhile back.

"motion control development"

The key word was development, that includes the PS2 prototypes. So unless this thing is coming out in 2040, I don't see over 5 years of development being early in the process. His comments were talking about the Motion Controller market.

Somnipotent3273d ago

yep... that's what microsoft said about natal...

sikbeta3273d ago

This can't be more obvious, Sony always adopt something and make it an standard, sticks, Rumble and now motion control, not saying I'll love it because is implemented

It must must must have a small psp go type analogue stick or its a no go !

saint_john_paul_ii3273d ago

they better add in a control for movement.

colonel1793273d ago

If it doesn't have an analogue stick it will probably fail, at least with hardcore games, and could be doomed to just be used with shovel ware

heylo3273d ago

First rule of PR, if your releasing something, regardless what you may think of it, you talk it up, you make it sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread.

"We have had talks with company management where we discussed whether we should approach [the motion controller] as a peripheral or a platform, and we agree that this has huge potential -- so we position this as a hardware platform, developed with superior alien technology just like the Cell" he said.
