Microsoft: Social tools are at heart of Xbox

A 'core part' of the console's future...

Microsoft will continue to bring social tools to the Xbox, with the company suggesting that the interactivity of the newly launched Sky Player is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what innovations lie ahead.

Speaking to TechRadar at the launch of Sky Player on the Xbox, Microsoft's Neil Thompson confirmed that the forthcoming arrival of Twitter and Facebook on the Xbox 360 were also just a step along the path to a truly social entertainment experience.

"Everyone wants to tweet, everyone wants to Facebook and I can tell you that we will expand the types of services we offer over time because we think this is just the core element for what the future of entertainment is," said Neil Thompson.

"That's what we are trying to define and deliver all at the same time. The social capabilities that we bring are going to be at the heart of what we do in the future. Whatever technology that is, it is going to be a core part of the future. We never stop developing."

basically they are saying "Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, etc, What?! We are a social community console yes we are great! Not like that kind of thing the competition has!"

GWAVE3280d ago

I didn't buy a console for a "social experience". I have a real social life, ya know. I bought a console to play games.

So, keep your social experience. Where are your AAA games, Microsoft? Oh, you're STILL talking about Halo 3 and Gears?

I think I've been sticking around too many gaming blogs including N4G. When I read the headline, for a brief moment, I thought "Social tools" meant 360 fanboys/tools.

"360 fanboys" are at heart of Xbox (US success)

TotalPS3Fanboy3280d ago

Microsoft have been focusing on how to rip off its customers even more with services such as Facebook that is free on the PS3 and PC.

hardcore gamers... you got shafted... they are trying to be the next wii hd

"Social tools are at heart of Xbox"

I agree. This is precisely the mentality that Microsoft have adopted and focused on. And it's the primary reason why my 360 has barely been touched in 2009. I'd say my game time his year has so far been about 50% PS3, 20% Wii, 10% PC, 10% 360, 5% DS, 5% PSP. Games should be at the heart of a games console, not "social tools." I don't care about social tools. They're nice to have, but they should not be the primary focus. 2010 should see a marked improvement in 360 games versus this year, so I'm excited for that. I just renewed my Xbox Live Gold subscription, so I'm hoping to get some good use out of it this next year.

vhero3280d ago

Yet they are still counted as the least anti social console on the market right now. Sure they give access to facebook etc.. as do the ps3 and wii through the browser. However PS3 allows developers like EPIC release custom mods etc on the console as they are very open to sharing unlike the 360 which is a WALLED console. One of the many reasons you will never see a game like LBP and MODnation racers on the 360.

The Killer3280d ago

is xbox 360 suppose to replace the PC's or what? who needs facebook twitter etc on xbox live? isnt it all available in the internet for free??

they way MS talking about Xbox Live as if it is replacing PC and internet and forgot the basic thing which is gaming.

where is the AAA's for 360 this year?? all i hear is some netfix, twiter, facebook etc and nothing about AAA games except forza 3(racing game that tries to copy grand terismo ).

Arnon3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

Amazing. None of you on this first comment reply section even like the Xbox 360. I should hold a contest to see if anyone can find at least 10 Xbox 360-only related articles without at least 2 Playstation fans. I wonder if that's even possible.

If that were true, they would be selling the least amount of consoles and would ultimately be out of the market by now, no? Sorry, but I wasn't aware mods = more community than a Online service dedicated to more than just gaming. Not to mention XNA community games.

It really is amazing that the mods allow the constant excessive trolling into these articles. They seem to go by the code of "If they're not actually saying anything rude to other people, then it's all good! We support our members (70% being Playstation extremists, while the other 30% go to the Xbox 360, Wii and PC)" I really want to see a 360 article where the PS3 or PC is not mentioned. I wonder if people are even able to control themselves for that long. Probably not.

It's never...
"Oh hey! Microsoft's doing some cool features with Xbox LIVE! They have an entire page dedicated to gamers being able to create their own games!" no... it's "Why should I do this when I can give my self a more ghetto experience. That way, I wont have to support this product and instead, I can go job hunting for program tools which will probably lead me to the XNA community anyway. Oh well! At least I can do it on my computer where no one will see me supporting this product!"

Venomish3280d ago

@1.3 "I thought "Social tools" meant 360 fanboys/tools"
haha exactly how I read it at first lol
it makes more sense that way :P

IdleLeeSiuLung3280d ago

Yeah, I agree with you!

Might I also add that XNA is an amazing piece of software that no other console maker is matching even close Anyone with some skill can publish their own game on a console and make a profit!!!

Sitdown3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

how some of you are defining "social experience"....I mean I know most are defining it with the influence of anti-360 sentiments, but it would be nice to see your working definition. SPOILER: The simple act of playing a video game can be qualified as a social experience.

I completely agree with your first paragraph; I mean since the playstation 3 has all these great games, why are these threads always full of ps3 fans who appear to have nothing better to do.

HolyOrangeCows3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

"PS3 has a browser and now netflix, but we still have cross chat!"

It's pretty much $50 a year for freaking cross chat, now.
And if the ND developer was right, it won't even have THAT over PSN.

UnwanteDreamz3280d ago

Well maybe you haven't noticed the xbox trolls in PS3 articles cause they don't interest you.

Arnon3279d ago (Edited 3279d ago )

Can you actually point out to me at least 10 articles that do not relate to sales where the 360 fanbase is trolling a PS3-ONLY article? I mean can you? I'm not even a 360 fanboy, but it's quite apparent here that everyone hate the console and apparently has a great gaming rig so they're not missing out on the games (I hardly believe this). Hell, can you even count more than 10 360 fanboys (not fans, but rabid fanboys) who troll PS3 articles?

In fact, should I consider you a troll because you're in this article solely to back up the obvious truth that the PS3 community on this site is absolutely nutters with the occasional level-headed man laughing at all of this?

In all honesty, I highly doubt it.

It's great that people support the PS3, because I do to. My two GoTY games for 2009 are Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. However, there's a difference between supporters, and fanboys, and in all honesty, if you're trying to say that the 360 fanbase is doing more trolling than the PS3 fanbase, then I really cannot take you seriously with this argument.

The fact remains that MS's "Social Gaming Experience" relies on costs in addition to the console. That the core reason those and later added features aren't free is to justify paying for the online multiplayer community even if new subscribers don't game online. Ignoring that many of those features are already available on the PS3 to everyone at no cost.

Just wish Sony would call them on it. Would also really like to hear from the guy paying for $50 to twitter in their living or bedroom when its already on their cell phone for nothing.

JasonPC360PS3Wii3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

On their cell phone for nothing? I never heard of free anything for a cell phone. You pay for every service and app on a cell phone.

Greywulf3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

facebook, youtube, twitter is all free on my blackberry. Isn't it sad when you can no longer talk about games on your console? But free apps that are free everywhere else as a selling point.. lol.

Godmars2903280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

Of course you pay a service for cell phone access. Pay extra for internet access on your cell phone. But you are not then asked to pay extra to access your address book using bookmark access to justify the "value" of paying for the first.

MS "gives" anyone with a 360 and internet connection - which they're already paying for - access to XBL. But they then ask for more to use its most advertises feature - online multiplayer - justifying it by giving additional access to other online features that are free through other online-accessible sources.

Yes - it makes that much sense!

Immigrant3280d ago

i bought the xbox 360 for the games

not to social network

thats for ugly people and people with no social life

JasonPC360PS3Wii3280d ago

Better than playing with yourself all the time, gamers use lots of lotion on that other system. Multiplayer, co-op, constant communication and community across the entire platform without interuption is what live is all about.

kalebgray923280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

sure online gaming social experiences are fun but twitter? i can use facebook and twitter on my ps3 for free but i purposely dont do it.... my ps3 is for blurays and games.... lol ... and obviously what you said is not what live is just about anymore.... they have gone casual on you bruh

HDgamer3280d ago

Jason 360 is talking about the console where you must pay to play, no glove no love; basically prostitution.

ultimolu3280d ago

Hypocrisy at it's finest. The PS3 gets attacked for bluray and other features while people claimed the 360 was for games. Now the 360 is trying to be like the PS3 all of a sudden.

Gotta love people like green and Jason 360 justifying this when all along it was just about teh games!

Yea i dont care about social network on xbox 360. I use for gaming and thats it. Facebook, twitter and all that crap i dont need.

"Everyone wants to tweet, everyone wants to Facebook and I can tell you that we will expand the types of services we offer over time because we think this is just the core element for what the future of entertainment is," said Neil Thompson.

Uhhh, I hate twitter, and cant stand facebook. Thats a helluva assumption he said there.

And that being the future of entertainment, no. Facebook and twitter are being pushed like its the new thing, but they forget, its the younger generation that will set the pace. If they are told twitter and facebook are cool, then they will avoid it like most kids avoid what their parents like. When Facebook and twitter go down in a couple years (not offline, but more ignored) then Microsoft better come up with a new form of entertainment.
