Dante's Inferno "scaled back" during development

TVGB: "With its mutated baby demons, whose slaughter the game awards you for, shooting out of nipples of giant bare breasted ladies, and other kind of delightfully twisted stuff, if any game has a chance of getting banned in certain countries it's probably Dante's Inferno. Developer Visceral Games isn't sitting around waiting for the inevitable ban hammer to hit though but is "scaling back" parts of the game for certain regions during development."

It's a shame that they have to do this kinda thing, but at least they are being realistic. Surely Valve didn't expect to slip L4D2 past the Australian censors?

Syronicus3282d ago

It makes me wonder if they banned the Woody Allen movie, "Everything you Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask). Considering that one of the scenes has the folks battling against the colossal tit and using a tank with a giant bra to catch it, you would think that a video game with a hero shooting out the nips on a demon would be acceptable. Come on, lighten up.

That's one of the benefits of living in America! We've got a corrupt ESRB, and people like Rockstar continue to push the boundaries on what IS allowed in an M-rated title(i.e. GTA IV). I'm pretty sure the North American release of Dante's Inferno will only be minorly scaled back. I'm more worried about this being a God of War knock-off. But in the end, I guess it all comes down to Yonkers. You know we Americans love sweater muffins.

Im so sick of people calling this a GoW knock off. It's not like God of War invented the beat-em-up genre. Who the hell cares anyway, the game looks awesome. The only reason people call it a GoW ripoff is because it's multi-platform. I support Sony and all but seriously you guys need to look past this exclusive bullsht. Had this been a Sony exclusive, you'd be all over it like a fat kid on cake. Kratos is cool and all but his time is almost coming to an end. We all know what is going to happen, he'll kill all the gods, and greek mythology comes to an end, The End, there I just saved you several months of waiting and several hours of playing the game. Time to move on people.

“We totally respect different cultural sensitivities..."

I think what they meant to say was "We don't respect facist governments that censore video games, but if we want to sell in that country we're going to have to scale it back".

And of course Australia won't even accept their 'scaled back' version, so this is an automatic import from the good ol' USA.

nycredude3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

Um.. I know where you are coming from but.. it is a God of War Knock off. Check out the videos of it, it's almost identical. I'm sure it will be a good game because these guys made deadspace but to pretend it's not a ripoff is silly.

Edit: And btw GOW 1 and 2 on the !PS2! are better games than most next gen games so you remark about GOW times is up, I say no. It will be up when gamers say it is, not when you think it is.

I for one cannot wait for this game. I'm buying GOW3 as well but I love the concept of running through hell more so than causing havoc on Mt. Olympus. I just hope they dont censor anything for the NA version. Sucks for Australia though. I think they should push it so hardcore that it ends up getting a 18+ rating. Like running a long a bridge in LUST completely made of damned souls forced to forever fornicate with each other. It's SICK, TWISTED and I WANT IT!! Games like GoW took hardcore brutality to the max and now it's time to push it completely off the edge.

alphakennybody3281d ago

If they scaled it back to avoid the ban-hammer,man imagine when GOW3 with all it's gore comes out. I mean the scene of Helios stirred my stomach when i first saw it, it felt real also you could feel the pain through Helios' expression.

ssipmraw3281d ago

they are pretty unpredictable, ninja gaiden 2 was released here with no editing what so ever

ReservoirDog3163281d ago

I have no clue how that stuff's gonna get passed the ratings boards. And we saw the video of that a long time ago. So it's theoretically gonna look more realistic when it comes out.

What would happen if the ratings boards said that piece isn't allowed? His head is an item in game that is probably gonna be used throughout. So how can they remove that?

Lionsguard3281d ago

Gore from GOW and Ninja Gaiden is one thing, but the imagery here is based on a religion, even though really it came from the Divine Comedy. Ripping off the heads of minotaurs and hacking off limbs of spider clan ninjas is pretty docile compared to fighting female demons with giant penis/clitoris tenticle things coming out from the stomachs, racing a giant naked demon up a tower thats shaped like a penis and then fighting said demon who spawns aborted baby demons from her nipples. And yes this is all in the game, look up the Lust video. Also gluttony has fat naked demons that spew vomit and defecate all over you. I think you see what the difference between GoW/NG and Dante's Inferno is.

ReservoirDog3163281d ago

I think I just died a little reading that. That's just too much for anything, be it movies, books or games.

My opinion ^

Lionsguard3281d ago

It sounds bad but it's awesome. Should check out the video over at gametrailers. I mean the tower doesn't scream penis. But hell it does remind you of one. Then again, this is hell we're talking about. Of course it has to be bad.

Speaking of Australia in the article, I have a feeling that Sony cut funding for L.A. Noire due to a possible Teen rating because that game is coming from an Australian developer. I mentioned it before.

Also, I may be in the minority, but I'm really excited about Inferno. I know a lot of people are saying it's a knock off of God of War, however I think this game will be well received.

jbiz3203281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

and scheduled for a worldwide release then you sir are an idiot. LA NOIRE is'nt even that sort of game.

Feral Gamer3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

But it won't be rated M. There won't be much, if any blood, no adult situations. A 40's murder/mystery sandbox game taking place in LA from a developer in Australia sounds like a snooze. Australia has some of the most strict censorship guidelines of any country.

I know Rockstar isn't producing LA Noire, but all of their GTA games had some sort of censorship.

kaveti66163281d ago

I respect the right of people to want certain aspects of media censored. I don't know what the big deal is. If you live in a country that doesn't appreciate your ideas, you move. It may sound drastic to some, but the world is free in that sense. Or, as many of you are probably aware, you can try and ship the uncensored versions of games in, or if you buy it on PC, and you're slightly good with debugging and crap, you can bring back source files in the game and restore hidden content.
