Datel "disappointed" with 360 memory lock-out

Third party peripheral firm Datel, who make a range of Max Memory storage units for Xbox 360, says it's "disappointed" with MS's decision to stop unofficial memory units working with the 360's upcoming dashboard update.

"We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else," a Datel rep told CVG.

I knew this announcement was aimed at Datel. In an article earlier today, I mentioned Datel's 2 GB and 4 GB Mad Memory memory cards. They're the only products I could think of that would be affected by this announcement.

Look for officially licensed stuff, because saving $10 isn't worth loosing your save games.

360 Elite = $299 (An Arcade + 120gb HD would be at $350 already).
Play and Charge kit = $20
Wifi adapter = $100
Live = $50 a year

That's $299 vs $470 for the first year. Add in another 3 years of Live and you are at $299 vs $620 (for cost of ownership over 4 years). I own all 3 system but come on...

The ps3 uses industry standards for their peripherals. No proprietary technology here.

Wanna replace your HD? Use a standard 2.5" sata drive.

Wanna use your own bluetooth headset? You can do that no prob.

What kind of cable charges the PS3 controllers? USB.

Keyboard and mouse? USB or bluetooth are acceptable.

Wireless internet? Standard on the console. No $100 add-on (Except that early 20gb model). This one annoys me more than anything. How MS has gotten away with charging ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A FRIGGIN WIRELESS NETWORK ADAPTER is simply beyond me

Get your facts straight man. If you picked the 360 over the PS3 because of some false belief that 360 had better non-official peripherals support, then you are just about the worst shopper i've ever met.

PS3 overpriced? It's been the other way around for quite some time now(over two years). And this memory lock-out and PS3 price drop just put the final nail in that coffin(value & choice).

They're not "alternatives", they're basically what we should've been getting.

The maximum size for MS memory cards are 512MB. What datel sells starts at 2/4GBs and can be upgraded to 16GBs via SD cards.

But I found it "too good to be true" back in the day, and postponed my purchase. Fortunately I don't have one of those, and will not be losing my storage.

I bought a 360 because I wanted to see what was up. Could it compare to the ps3? Well other than gears, every 360 game I played was udder crap. It's a shame that the only reason I have to turn on my 360 is netflix. If you have a good PC, which I do, there's little reason own one. The only game I plan on buying for it in the next sic months is splintercell conviction, if it actually stays off the ps3.

MS does not care about their customers, only about getting more money from them. They know there is a cult like devotion with game players to their console of choice, and that is why they try to keep milking them for what they can.

It is pretty pathetic when they make up BS why they can't allow 3rd party accessories, because on the personal computer side MS used to be the champions of "plug & play". They know all about industry standardization. They seem to choose to avoid it when it comes to a game console, becuase they want to make money off all the hardware accessories. But a video game console is just a computer. It's a bold face lie to tell customers that 3rd party components will cause damage. It won't if you are designing your product to work with the agreed upon technical requirements that most component manufacturers work together on in standardization.

Datel. XD I used them to mod my DS...Oh good memorys, someone would walk up and trash my DS because they had a psp, I would show them my movies, music, web searching, and everything the PSP did, but it had a better battery life.

Its ridiculous, just how hard would it be for MS to make a HDD caddy with all the ant-piracy electronics sealed away and then have a slot for you to insert a standard 2.5" SATA drive? For less than the price of the 120GB 360 drive I went out and bought a 500GB SATA drive for my PS3 its just crazy. If Microsoft really want to make the 360 a true media hub stop holding it back with small expensive proprietary drives.
