PS3 Firmware 1.80 announced - Upscaling and Remote Play

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

In a comprehensive update to PS3's already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3's credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3's hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

This is the part of this whole article that impresses me the most. More than the upscaling.

I always liked the idea of streaming to my ps3. My ps3 has a 250gb external HDD added on and my 2 computers combine for 400GB so now my ps3 just got a WHOLE lot bigger. Now i don't even need to go to the pc to do anything except download more stuff!!

So now here i go to give one to sony. And as a bonus we can print our pictures on a networked printer. How cool is that!!

Just these...see with PS3 games the developer has to code the game in order to allow for "upscaling" but specifically it needs to be 1080p and then it just gets down-scaled to whatever you have. So if it's a 720p game and you just a have 1080i TV then you will get whatever closest to 720p which in this case would be 480p or even worse 480i. That's just the way the game was made which is why we will NEVER get upscaled PS3 games because it's left for the developers to use.

I just don't know what to think. It's just like Sony to fix a problem and not let us in on it. Almost as if they're in denial that the problem existed in the first place. That was the case with backwards compatibility issues. They just fixed it and never let us know.

wth the guy above me is talking about, but yes you're games will be upscaled via the PS3 if your telly is able to support the refined resolution in a native format. In other words, if your're TV is maxed at 1080i then you will get the 720p max out of the game, period. You can override this setting in the PS3's display settings but it might not look the best on the tev compared to 720p. There is no reason for your games to play at 480i with the upscaling applied - that makes no senese whatsoever. Hell, you can even mod the PS2 with the "HD-disc" to pump out 1080i res's on PS2 games now & get better resolutions than that - so this guy is trolling and offering up garbage analysis. His own.

FP, if this is the case and your brother's telly is only capable of displaying 720p, then no you won't be able to display in a resolution higher than that. It's not the PS3 -- it's your telly, and the best resolution will be the 720p native (hopefully that's at least native) or 480i - yikes. I'm not sure what 1080i issues you're speaking of in regard to the PS3. I have had no issues whatsoever and with my televisions, the PS3 and resolution issues and believe me I would notice.

I never called into question whether or not flat panel displays were able to output resolution in an HD format. You will have to register your PSP with your PS3.

The PS3 will then broadcast a signal only to said registered PSP. I am actually really curious how this would work with PS1 games that you can download to your PSP. Will you be able to save PSP saves to the PS3 and what now?

This is the one I've been waiting for baby. Actually I'm pissed off now because I have a brand new Pioneer DVD player that wont get used now because my beloved PS3 upscales DVD's. AND PS2 GAMES. WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? I was starting to think it was a pipe dream.

I have been playing dvd's on my ps3 using HDMI, and it almost looks HD, and with this firmware update, its going to look WAAAAY better now that its being upscaled to HD. Also, watching it through an HDMI cable will look a lot better than the vga cables.

On the Sony press release, there's this note at the bottom:

I think that means that DVD upscaling is limited to HDMI connections.

I was wondering the same thing...My Vaio that I got through work has a dlna sticker on it, and I got the laptop before I panned on getting a ps3...When I got the ps3 I realized it didn't have the dlna enabled yet, and I kind of forgot about it until now...

There is no DLNA programs or anything loaded on my notebook...I too was wondering how it works...

Also the remote play with the psp is cool...but I have not found a reason to buy any portable yet...and anyone know if the rumors of being able to use any pc are true? I know not yet, but some articles stated that eventually you won't just be able to use a psp to access your ps3 from anywhere, you will be able to use an PC enabled version of the PSN...and claim it would still be free of charge...if that happens even by christmas...that will be the coolest thing that I never had to pay for...

I didn't get into the warhawk beta...but at least I get to screw around with some DLNA stuff tomorrow night...

I really liked this news, thanks, deep!
I liked it can play media files from any device connected to a home network. But i can only guess if it would be possible with Macs and Apple media file formats.
The only thing i didnt read in this article that the possibilities that still give the advantage of X360 over ps3 in networking. They are in-game communication options of X360. I mean game invitations and beginingg /accepting voice chats with other players without leaving a game. And the need of leaving a chat room when a game starts. If sony implements these in Ps3's future updates it would be really nice.
BTW I was surprised when I found the possibility to talk to an opponent in some games marked with the "PSN compatible" sign. Like FN:R3. Unfortunately Sony doesnt describe all features of its console and that is pretty strange.

Ya my tv supports 720p, but i want them upscaled to 1080i like my 360. It looks so much better in my opinion. So my question is will this upgrade make it so I can play resistance in 1080i. I also don't agree with what a previous poster said about the dev needing to code it. If that was the case then old ps or ps2 games wouldn't be able to be upscaled.

Alright the update is cool. I am especially happy about the remote play. I am still confused about the DLNA stuff. I have a sony laptop so i am guessing it will be compatible. Does this officially mean i will be able to stream content from my computer?

Windows media player 11 has DLNA as long as you have that it should work with your laptop.

Any windows pc with xp or vista should work. Mac and linux probably work as well just depends on the software you use. I wouldn't count on streaming videos from a pc to a ps3 with a completely wireless solution reliably (especially hi-def). It's best to be completely wired especially for hi-def. If that is not possible than having the server wired and the client wireless would be good. If you have a draft 80211n pc and router than you could probably go completely wireless depending on the distance even though the ps3 is 80211G.

Software upscaling is not as efficient as a upscaling chip. Oh well, better than nothing.

The xbox 360 has an upscaling chip. So it does a better job on upscaling standard dvds than software upscaling like the ps3.

It will upscale to what?

If I or the majority of people dont have 1080p sets then what does the upscaling do, this is a ? for both the 360 and ps3 which both upscale.

Now i have 3 new sets plasma lcd and HDila RP all go to 1080i and 720p

so what does upscaling do for us.??

If this upscaling is only good for people with 1080p sets then thats great for them but the fact remains that the amount of people with 1080p sets is so small that its not that much of a big deal or am I wrong, someone please xplain.

if your tv supports 1080i then anything that upscales to 1080p will default to 1080i like the ninja gaiden demo plays in 1080i, because it is a 1080p game.

Since BR movies downscale to 1080i and are playable through component I dont see why this wont be the same. I'm guessing the update will upscale to 720p and 1080i through component and 1080p through HDMI, just like games and movies play now. Sony aren't stupid, they would have realised this. I guess I'll know for sure when I get home from work. If I'm wrong, then I'm selling my TV. Time to get that new Bravia 1080p.

Man, how I hope you're right. I just came back to this thread to specifically find that out.

About an hour ago, I was watching The Feed on AOTS, and my heart sank upon hearing that this new feature would only be made available for televisions with HDMI inputs.

I've got a fantastic Hitachi 53" HDTV projection (only 1080i, but beautiful picture nonetheless), but it's only component. Yeah, good luck to me, for trying to convince the wife that we need to spend ANOTHER four-plus g's because it's missing some funny-looking plug sockets.

Hopefully, AOTS was flat wrong, or referring specifically to PROGRESSIVE 1080 output.

Anyone...anyone?

Meanwhile, I'll think up a contingency plan in case this horrible announcement proves to be true.

I think they're talking about needing HDMI for 1080p just like PS3 games and BR movies.

If PS3 games play at 1080i on component and BR movies play at 1080i on Component, then why not upscaled games and DVDs?

It would make no sense for this brilliant update if only 5% of people could use it.

I have a ps3 but to say its services will kill live is a ittle crazy.
Even though we have free online on the ps3 inno way shape or form does it work like live does, I understand we shouldnt expect the ps3 to be like the 360 dash ad live but as of now its a no contest. The live service ad dashboard is seamless and easier to use then the ps3 dash cross bar. I know its a matter of preference and alot of oyu prefer the way the ps3 dash works etc... but the ease of the 360 dash, the ease of marketplace and the ease of the unified frinds list and the simplicity of inviting,chatting and other features simly makes the 360 dash and features better. When i turn on my ps3 it feels cumbersome, andyeah its not a pain to go fromleft to right to get to the menu you want bt in no way is it as easy an unified like the way the 360 is. Now dont get me wrong, I am sure,actually positive that with each update for the ps3 it will get better and closer to the experience of live and the simplicity of milkitplace.

While others think that becuase of the ps3 's high price and lack of games means that the ps3 will fall behind an never catch up is total nonsense. I will admit the 360 has the advantage coming out earlier and added lots of features with updates that the ps3 doesnt have yet plus the 360 had slightly better launch gaes and now has tons of games out for it including arcade titles , also adding that ms proved the 360 is a power horse with gears of war and other games and future titles plus this time around MS has more exclusives and more games in general coming versus xbox1 I still beleave that sony will somehow equal the 360 in the next 2 years.

The ps3 is regarded as a expensive machine that has all the bells and whistles and that resonates in peoples mind when a price drop occurs for the ps3, soon tons of games will come to the ps3 and then when the price drops alot of ps2 owners and people still on the fence might buy the ps3. Its way to early even with the lead that the 360 has to judge how well the ps3 will do. Its not like the 100 million or so people who still havent bought a next gen system will only buy the 360, tons of people are still playing ps2 and eventually those people who know the PLAYSTATION brand name most likely will buy the ps3 over the 360 when the prices drop and more games are available.

By the way this bubble system stinks, its exactly like the same way on the 360 report system, you could keep your mic off and play game sonline and end up with tons of kids giving you bad feedback just for the hell of it. The same applies wth this bubble system, I can simply punish every person posting just BECAUSE, I went from 9 bubbles to 5 most likely becuase a fanbot didnt like somethin I said and thats unfair. I see alot of posters here who are fair in the posts they make yet they loos bubbles becuase of fanbots of one system or another. So basically these fanbots can sit here all day and just ruin you becuase of thier childish ways.

ok the media streaming is cool, but it seem to be no differnt than my 360!! what I mean is the movies that I re encoded with videora xbox encoder to play on my 360 also play on my Ps3. now since the last 360 update I dont need videora to play the movies, so the new movies that I got that werent converted dont play on my PS3. sony needs to open up them codecs an allow all content. then maybe just maybe it might be a bit better at this than the 360 because it is more accurate with my music.good update more codecs an this will be beautiful.

now the PS3 game upscaling has a bit of an issue. I have GOW2, so I threw it in to check it out( im running HDMI 1080i)the picture definitly looks better but... when it goes into motion the screen looks a bit funny, like its cracking up, not bad enough so you can play the game, only noticeable when your looking for it(maybe its the 1080i)

I just thought about something!! I think this IS better than what the 360 does because the movies that im playing only run using my media center, they wont run from the 360 dashboard, but they run from the PS3 cross bar. out of 15 movies I have on my hard drive only 1 play from the dashboard an the rest from the media center extender, that ALL play on the PS3 unless its not converted, so yeah im feeling what sony has done here. now all someone needs to do is hack this like the did the PSP so I can run MAME or SNES an I'll be in heaven with my PS3!!

I just downloaded the new firmware (Borat DVD looks great by the way upscaled) and now i cant watch my blu ray movies, the audio is still there, and they worked right before i downloaded it, seriously i was watching one and i stopped it to download the update. I also played street fighter, smackdown vs raw for ps2 and it's smoothe as silk.

yeah, im for real, they were working before i downloaded the update, i was seeing how both pirates of the caribbean movies were looking, and then i downloaded the update, and none of them show up, the audio is there but as soon as the movie should be viewable it goes to the default hdmi/dvi screen and says "no signal" only for blu ray movies, the games still work, which is odd

Hate to say it but upscaling will ONLY work if you use HDMI.

I'm stuck with component on my TV and PS2/DVD look exactly the same.
My Bro has a 40" Samsung R7 for his PS3 and PS2/DVD look much sharper as he uses HDMI.

Need to find a few hundred quid to get a half decent HDMI set now :(
