Uncharted 2's Wells on PS3 over 360, motion controls, the next Drake game and more

Uncharted 2 ships in the UK today. The superlative bin is empty: it's the highest rated PS3 exclusive of all time, and one of the best reviewed full stop.

We were lucky enough to get some time with Evan Wells, co-president of Naughty Dog, to talk about the game's development, how PS3's unique aspects allowed the team to make the title it did, how the company will now follow on into a third game and much more.

Evan Wells is a great guy. Classy and talented beyond belief. Good interview. Hopefully we get another Naughty Dog game on PS3 by 2011.

Avenged Sevenfold5305d ago

Very humble yet to the point. I bow to ND!

harrisk9545305d ago

I think that most, if not all, of the PS3 developers show a humbleness and maturity that many (not all, but many) of the 360 developers don't.

^ I totally agree. M$ LOVES to be the dirty dog of the industry. Nintendo, Sony, these are all Japanes companies and we all know that being humble is like coded in their genetic system. Even SCEA or Nintendo US stay humble while M$ only keeps barking their a** off and always trying to down play the competition. Their developers also seem to follow in M$ footsteps. Turn 10 anyone?

Evan Walls is a great guy and I get impressed by him every time I read his intreview. A true leader with a vision. And if ND can pull a product like U2 with the internal team of 85 people, it'd be downright shameful for Ubisoft if they can't surpass Uncharted 2's quality in every way.

@harrisk954
"I think that most, if not all, of the PS3 developers show a humbleness and maturity that many (not all, but many) of the 360 developers don't"

Come on, It's not like every person who work for M$ is the most arrogant and disrespectful, is only Turn 10, Greenberg and some of the PR crew, but not all

Pumbli5305d ago

zeeshan - Talking about Japanese console makers being humble... "Genesis does what Nintendon't"... Does that ring any bells? :P

Well anyways, the people at Naughty Dog deserve a medal for making Uncharted 2, I played it for about an hour yesterday on a 1080p HDTV but eventually my friends had to drag me away from the TV... :P

zeeshan5305d ago (Edited 5305d ago )

No, that was Sega of America that came up with that and no Sega of Japan. True, it's the same company but the divisions are different. That's exactly why I also mentioned SCEA in my comment but yeah I see where you are coming from and you make a very valid point but still, if you go 10 years back when Nintendo, Sony and Sega were all in the field, it wasn't ever THAT dirty. Go back 20 years when Sega and Nintendo were head-to-head, it wasn't this dirty. We ALL know how the marketing department of M$ works. It's not just their gaming division. It's rather how they operate as the whole company. Firefox vs Internet Explorer, Windows vs Linux, Windows vs Mac, Xbox vs PS3, Office vs Star office the list goes on. The only thing M$ marketin department knows is to downplay the competition while making inferior hardwar (RROD XBOX360) and Software (ME, Vista, 98)

To Harrisck 954... You sound typical. Trying to classify yourself into an elite group. Good job. The fact remains that like the ND guy said, it's not whether it's 360 or ps3, it's the developers that make a difference. To say one console's group of developers are all great and humble, and the others are arrogant, is just PLAIN ignorant.
One example of this is how so many "ps3 only!" fans attack Turn 10 for their boastful words about their game. Yet it's just fine that the producer of Gran Turismo 5 says that his game is going to look better than LIFE.
You and your ilk are now the norm on this website, and it turns off rational people, so the more of us rational people leave, the higher percentage of fanboys there are on here...it's a downward spiral. Open your eyes.

Oh, and I just finished the first Uncharted last night. IT ROCKS! I may just go buy the new one tonight!

calis5305d ago

"Trying to classify yourself into an elite group."

He didn't actually. He is making a valid point about guys like ND, Insomniac vs guys like Turn 10. The proof is out there if you research.

"To say one console's group of developers are all great and humble, and the others are arrogant, is just PLAIN ignorant."

No, it's actually backed by proof. You see ND actually thank Bungie for Uncharted 2 then you see Microsoft/Turn 10 to say Forza 3 is the only Next-Gen racing sim you will ever see.

" Yet it's just fine that the producer of Gran Turismo 5 says that his game is going to look better than LIFE."

GT5 producer DIDN'T put down Forza 3, he was promoting his own. He never implied anything about games on other consoles like MS/Turn10 did.

"You and your ilk are now the norm on this website, and it turns off rational people, so the more of us rational people leave, the higher percentage of fanboys there are on here...it's a downward spiral. Open your eyes."

Get over yourself. You're no more rational then any one.

85 people internally worked on UC2, and it took 18 months!

Naughty Dogs are freaking game geniuses!!!!

Long, epic single player, fully fleshed out mp, coop, movie mode!!!!

85 people and 18 months!!!! I know they had Sony support but damn this is crazy!!!

wizzle525305d ago

Got the game yesterday, only just started, Cinematics AMAZING its like a visual representation of a Matthew Reilly book (in my opinion) absolutely amazing. Cant wait to continue the game through the weekend, lectures done for the week, all time dedicated to UC2!

Janitor5305d ago

"We’re fortunate that we get to work on a system that has a hard drive and uses blu-ray for storage. Without these things, Uncharted 2 would have been a very different game. What we were able to do with the Cell processor allowed us to achieve a density of polygons and a fidelity to our effects that would simply not be possible without it."

Just sayin'

Jeff2575305d ago

Another great interview from him. He always gets to the point of the question and remains humble about things as well. I do hope they get the much needed rest and can come back and get right back into deciding what direction they want to go in next. Whether they decide to give us a new Uncharted or even a New Jak game is fine with me. Either one would be a day one buy.

Currently playing Drakes Fortune on crushing, next will be to replay Among Thieves, but I'm sure it still holds up today.

P_Bomb1453d ago (Edited 1453d ago )

Recently re-platinumed 1-3. Uncharted 2 aged better than I even expected. I enjoyed it more now than I did a decade ago. It’s more polished than 1, tighter than 3 and Yemen in 3 was gorgeous. Shambhala out-prettied Ubar though. 60fps w higher res’ made for a damn good rerun.

Abnor_Mal1453d ago

Question: When you say Uncharted2 aged better than expected, are you talking about the original PS3 game or the remastered collection on PS4. I ask because I think that a remastered version of the game would look and play better than the original.

I doubt that the original ran at 60 frames, how many years old is the remastered collection anyway.

I need to replay the original trilogy along with the collection, not a fan of the collection trophy of beating levels in a set time and don't think the originals required that for platinum.

P_Bomb1452d ago (Edited 1452d ago )

@abnor_mal
It’s true that the remasters have upped the resolution and given it 60fps, but the base game is the same. The art design and base textures/physics/ animations are the same yet still look contemporary. More-so than UC1 which isn’t as tight, or UC3 in some cases which I found a bit clunky in close quarters.

UC2 level design was a great evolution in bringing the verticality from the jungle into rural/urban settings while maintaining smooth animation transitions. Drake still moves better than the ginger in Star Wars Jedi. Outdoor areas are better lit.

UC2 also has more action and better pacing imo, which helps when replaying a game 10 years later. Kept me engaged.

You don’t need to time trial for platinum. They stuck the speedrun trophies in a seperate extended dlc category so have no fear.

MadLad1453d ago

I thought the originals were good, but not great. I understand that puts me in the minority here. That said, Uncharted 4 was freaking fantastic.

Profchaos1453d ago (Edited 1453d ago )

Yeah I understand the hate for 4 prior to playing it I was firmly against it and felt like 3 wrapped things up already but now after playing it I think it was the best in the franchise.

Now I look back at two and I feel like I'm playing an on the rails shooter everything is so tightly scripted including the infamous train scene you simply can't make a mistake

Rimeskeem1453d ago

I think Uncharted 2 is a lot like AC2. Both games took the idea and basically improved it in every single way.

Movefasta19931452d ago

Uc2, AC2,Halo2, Soul calibur 2, Killzone 2, Infamous 2 , Dishonored 2 and a few more. The only negative thing I have against uc2, and imo it annoyed me,are the blue apes, uncharted 1 handled the super natural far better.
