play these games next to eachother and you'll see killzone doesn't look that much better than gears. in fact graphics are the only thing it does better. and in killzone you never leave the same grey scenery. at least gears 2 has some originality in the level design.

most people i know lend their games between each other, especially the the ones that are completed in a couple of days that are not worth the extortionate £40+ price tag, licensing is not just about selling, its to stop lending & trading!

the media industry over the last few months slating game store for overcharging second hand titles is their hope of consumer acceptance, stick one to the stores.

This is disappointing. I bought the PS3 version because out of the reviews that I've read, none of them talked about a difference in graphical quality. I'm not bothered if the differences were minimal, but this is rather huge. I tend to buy multiplats for the PS3 unless there's a big problem with it. This is a pretty big problem in my opinion, and shame on the devs for making such a crappy port.

To take what works best on the PC and make it Play well on a console, I've got to give a Hats off to codemasters.

If you liked the original Ghost Recon (and your not a PC gamer) its worth it. Damn hard on normal, which BTW is its lowest level.

Forget the graphics (even the worst port looks decent for a open world) but dont forget a single bullet means something.

It is a real shame. They put zero effort in using the PS3's strength (any more ?). That is open world. Use the damn harddisk. Its a straight PC port. I am pretty disappointed by Codemasters so "great" "Ego" engine. BS. Its a PC engine made to work on a console. WTH.

it has nothing to do with a HD. The Cell is dramatically different than normal PC CPUs and the 360's CPU, and the PS3 has more RAM constraints than the other systems. In an open world game, the textures are going to suffer because of that. There's just too much visual data to stick in the Ram to not be compressed further.

It has nothing to do with being lazy either. Nobody in their right mind will rewrite a whole engine to get a game to look only marginally better than it already does without rewriting it.

Lets not use old school theories regarding the cell.

"PS3 has more RAM constraints" Than what ? a PC.. Yes... a 360 No.

The term "broadband engine' is given to the cell because thats what it does best. Streaming.... The reason 256Mb XDR ram is in the machine.

On this gen consoles, K2, UC1 and I believe UC2 (havent played it yet) ,no load times, no install, and may I say , no competition.

Dude. Whether or not the cell is powerful is a non-issue. The fact of the matter is that it is drastically different from an average PC CPU. You'd still have to rewrite a lot of code for marginal gain to get it working as well on the cell. Regardless of power. You can have the most powerful engine in the world (CPU), but if it's in a car and you're making a boat you'll still have to do a lot of work to harness it.

And the memory is drastically different on both. Having split memory hurts the PS3 in this case. In a game optimized for the PS3, it's not a huge issue, but again the difference in architecture from traditional PC models hurts it.

It has nothing to do with being lazy, it has to do with sony departing too greatly from the largest development platforms in their hardware architecture. That's why there's such a large difference between engines designed solely for the PS3 and engines designed to be multi-platform or ported from a PC centric engine.

It is dramatically different that's why the engine needs to be designed dramatically different to take advantage of it.

Forget the memory as such. See it as a cache, a fast streaming buffer. Nothing else. Then design data in a way they can be swapped in and out as fast as possible. Use the HDD to virtualize the mem, with a static layout to reduce seek speeds.

All PC engines use static memory partitioning, system mem, texture buffers, back/front buffers etc. A streaming architecture is significant different. Without that taken into account, every multi platform game will always perform better on a PC centric architecture (the 360 can do back buffer optimization to some extend through its EDRAM, but this doesn't really change how the engine works).

Also, vertex reduction at the start of the render pipeline would require pre-processing of visual data (like a look ahead cache) and optimize geometry to allow the RSX to process less data. All those could be used to squeeze way more out of the PS3 (and is used already in exclusive titles).

I would like to see the SPU benchmark on the EGO engine. I can't believe its full optimized for the CELL (and possibly will never be).

I'm not saying creating a application layer on top of such an engine - which would perform well on a discrete chipsets (like PC/360) and the PS3 is easy (or even possible). I would just wish someone would bother about that at some point...

I get your point, but nobody will because you can get passable results without doing very much work at all. It's unfortunate, but they are running a business. Hopefully a third party engine developer like Epic can do something towards creating the separate back ends needed with similar front ends, but there really isn't any midground yet.

When the difference is to the point where you'd really only notice if you were playing both games side by side, it isn't that huge a deal. I doubt anyone will sit there looking at the ground textures for very long.

Well, Epic did a decent job with the Unreal Engine, yet, ONLY Batman A.A. came out good on both consoles (thank you Eidos). The same engine has been used by quite a few different developers so far, yet, only one managed to make a game that look great on both consoles. End results, it's even selling more on the PS3 (with a lower install base!!!). It does pay to polish a multi console game. But so far, it seem like most devs don't bother. We are not even talking about rewriting a whole game engine here. The SAME unreal engine version had been used in a few previous games before. Eidos just did more polishing and they got more sales out of it to prove it's worth it. Sadly, it does seem like many devs do not understand this concept. It should even be easier to polish a game with your OWN engine, not just a third party engine....

If you want to see how an open world game can match a PC version, go check FarCry 2 (no matter what you think about the game). But its conversion in both direction (and Ubi's Tunia engine) points fingers at Codemasters "Ego".

i agree that titles are usually much better & cheaper on the PC but will disagree with you about steam.

steam destroys your right to re-sell, trade, lend to a friend or even give away for free tittles you legally purchase.

get a retail box that has value not a digital copy that takes away your rights.

btw this is not operation flashpoit, codemasters brought the rights & they have dumbed the game down from the once great title for the console generation.

imho go get ArmA: Armed Assault, from the same makers as the original flashpoint.

I got it for the PC, too. But I still would rather play it on the PS3 (better multiplayer on PSN) and I hate the 360 controller (and no, I don't play click-n-kill on the PC). So, seeing those shots leaves me rather disappointed. I might get the PS3 version later, when its down to $19.99

Edit: I know I can get a DS3 working on the PC. But I have to map keystrokes to buttons and that simply does not work well. Most PC games support the 360 controller directly.

PSN network: I do have an account to play online. How many accounts do they expect me to create just to play with some friends online on a PC ? One for Steam, one for Live! one for - uh - codemasters ?

Sony or microsoft for that matter will have you belive their systems are the best. They end up hyping their products to no end.

in truth both of them are underpowered machines. Sure ps3 has some good exclusives (microsoft cant even claim that... most of the games on the 360 are multiplatform).

in the end both of them underperform on multiplatform titles and charge more for it. Imo in the gamers interest it is to pressure sony and microsoft to rethink their pricing policy.

You're missing the point. As long as its a multiplatform title - no matter which direction you port - you need to design it in a way it can run on both platforms.

I have not seen any multiplatform engine which takes full advantage of the PS3. That would be

- fully utilization and optimization of the SPUs:
Not just some crappy offloading of some common tasks. I want to see
*Fully SPU optimized AI
*Full physics support using the SPU
*Vertex reduction & optimization using the SPU
*Dynamic textures using the SPU
- I want to see them using the HDD to stream (and buffer) textures
- I want to see them using the BD Drive to store more the DVD9 sized textures.

And I want to see that in a multiplatform games.

the difference is the contrast or use of black, I am not saying changing your TV settings will sort this but the difference does seem to be the colour, and whilst you may not be able to get the PS3 version to look like the 360 version I bet you I could make the 360 version look like the PS3, and I bet you would not longer see a texture difference.

I even think the texture is actually better on the PS3 (or its just the lightning). But what's so obvious is, that they reduced the polycount in the environment (vegetation) in the PS3 version, thus making this a different game.

I think, that is, what happens when you use brute force porting approach to a fundamental different architecture. On one hand data size (and throughput) doesn't matter, on the other hand, you have a strong parallel cpu which can do flow optimization. Sure, throwing raw data at the later will not help in that respect. (Now I let you figure out, what I just said).

It looks like a new Game.Sony had troble from the beginning with this same problem .That's why game's from the ground up look much better on the PS3.Game's like Uncharted take's time to make .Port's don't so dev's relie on upscaling to do the rest.

The 360 version have too much brown color in it, it looks like the player is wearing sunglasses or some visor, the PS3 colors are more life like, but the graphics for both looks about the same.

I think all ports look the same but the upscaling in the 360 is better than the PS3.The PS3 is more Powerful don't get me wrong.That Cell Prosseser is a Beast but i think that the upscaler in the Xbox is better then the PS3's .That's why Port's look better on 360.Correct me if im Wrong but give Facts.

Even though it's far from the prettiest for this day and age of beautiful graphical standards, its still a unique start and I hope there are more attempts like this coming. Too bad about the the ps3 version, it looks like ass, the grass and ground textures look like some old xbox quality garbage, what gives?... but gameplay is what it's mostly about right? Yeah whatever...I'm a graphics whore myself. Yet another tough and lackluster conversion from 'pc friendly' to 'tricky PS3' hardware. OUCH. Hopefully their next installment will show a big improvement over this one.

I don't know how good this game will be, but as far as the graphics goes, this one isn't even close. The 360 wins hands down.

If they didn't say they were comparison shots then I wouldn't have known that it was the same game. The textures and colors look completely different on both platforms. The Xbox 360 version has that overused next-gen brown look to it and the PS3 has a soft and lighter feel to it. They both look good but look like entirely distinct games. I prefer the PS3 version since it's much easier to see. Overall, they did a horrible job porting this game to the consoles. Infinity Ward/Trey Arch never do a horrible job - Call of Duty games usually look 1:1 on both consoles or damn near close. They're lucky they released this before Modern Warfare 2 just to get a chance to get even decent sales.
