Video Games Are Art

Koku Gamer writes: "Art is a funny thing as some people can base their entire being on a specific piece while others may stare at it in bewilderment, puzzled as to why people care one iota about it let alone devoting an entire room of a gallery to it. I suppose that is why even the greatest minds of our civilization, such as Aristotle, have tried to classify what art is but still unsatisfied individuals remain. If we must derive a balanced meaning of the word art, then it should refer to aesthetics, expression, and emotion. With these standards, the remainder of this piece will outline why video games are a legitimate art form."

I, more than a lot of people, believe that they are art!

Same.

Games are art. Anyone that says otherwise hasn't looked hard enough. You can say that all games are are just action, shooting and explosions with bad stories about uninteresting characters. But you can say the same for most movies made today. But, just like movies, there are a few that push towards art. Flower, MGS, Half Life 2, GTA IV, Ico, SotC. Those are more artistic than most movies made today.

Not saying games are more artistic than movies. Few things can top Pan's Labyrinth,
Schindler's List, The Godfather and Pulp Fiction. But games are an effective medium for art.

edit: Oh and Braid. Braid's pretty sick.

You had believe believe that a major portion of video games is art!

I have been working as a designer/"artist" in the movie and game industry for 20 years now. From way back in the day of the Bitmap Bros, Gods and Magic pockets to epic event pieces today that can only be seen to believe in a couple years from now.....

It is a wonderful form of art 100%......... When the ceiling is lifted you will start to see true art raise in game, matching and even surpassing alot of cinematics of today.....

bjornbear3297d ago

I also believe videogames are the 7th form of art along with cinema and theater etc...

Its interactive art! Its as simple as that...of course only few games get the true status of a work of ART (not going to put Big Rigs 2 as Art....)

I hope in future there is more apreciation for videogames as an art form.

I'm obcessed with unlocking artwork from game concepts and just absorbing them =D

All one needs to do is look at Okami or Shadow of the Colossus and they will know games can be art.

Ziriux3297d ago

Yea Shadow of the Colossus is a perfect example of arts in games. Oh and without a doubt Okami is arts, it looks and spells arts.

rareairtone3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

but i would hope that people wouldn't consider those games art over anything else because of their animation styles and gameplay.

I seriously don't understand the argument that videogames aren't a form of art.

Also i wish the guy in this article hadn't had forum-esque grammatical errors.

Just like anything from movies, music, to video, anything can be art with unique imagination and innovation, and the concept, a lot of things make it into arts.

Art is when a medium is used to evoke emotion. This has been absent in most games I agree.

Shadow of the Colossus and Call of Duty 4 meet this criteria for me though. In order for a game to be art it needs to evoke emotion through the interactive medium itself and not borrow other mechanics from other mediums.

Example: Bioshock has emotional moments. FF has emotional moments. They truly evoke emotion. So why arent they art? Well Bioshock evokes emotion through dialogue, dialogue can be found in the music and movie mediums. FF uses cutscenes. Cutscenes are what make up a movie.

You have to actually be interacting with the medium because thats what games are-interactive. Now Shadow of the Colossus and CoD4 do this. When you feel something in the game, its happening real time as a result of your own actions. No cutscenes or dialogue. Playing the game does it by itself. That is why games have the capacity to become art-Shadow of the Colossus mostly, and CoD4. CoD4 was more inconsistent than SotC, but regardless succeeded in meeting the criteria above making it true art (IMO).

People argue MGS4 is. The microwave scene comes to mind. This is incorrect. The game's mechanics are not built around this. It was a context sensitive moment and consisted of you repeatedly pressing the triangle button

Ziriux3297d ago

Totally agree with you, Bioshock is a very good example of such arts. The music, the use of environment within the game to bring emotion and feeling is great. While Bioshock may show it through arts, MGS4 shows it through story with emotion.

+1 for you and bubbles.

Bioshock has one of the best soundtracks in a videogame of all time.
