Epic Boss: Next Gears of War will have Natal Support

Gamesthirst: Mark Rein is the head honcho of Epic Games, so when the man speaks people listen. The studio is home to titles like the Gears of War franchise and Unreal Tournament, two of the biggest names in the industry. According to Mark, even those titles will have Natal functionality, Speaking to XOM, mark said:

The 360 had the hardcore appeal to it. Slowly over time that appeal is vanishing and once the dust settles all you will see is people flailing their arms around.

Xbox Avatars Shoe3299d ago

I wonder if Marcus will do the same motion as my N4G avatar...

GWAVE3299d ago

I'm laughing right now at all the people who mocked Wii motion controls and the PS3 Eye, and now they're jumping for joy at the idea of "virtually" giving Marcus Fenix a nice big bro-hug while they play Gears 3.

thegood333299d ago

I can't wait to chainsaw some fool with my own arms LOL, I'll even scream like Marcus AAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Anon19743299d ago

I can't wait to come home from a hard day and jump around my living room like a hyperactive toddler, ducking behind furniture and holding my fingers like a pretend gun.

"Pewww Peewww! Take that, Horde! Pewww, pewww! Now I'm hiding behind my ottoman! Can't see me, nasty Horde!"

Oh wait. That's not the game I want to play at all.

u got owned3299d ago

@ Pennywise

Sad but true, this motion trend is the end of hardcore gaming.

Is Natal going to have gamers looking like this:

vhero3299d ago

Read the god damn article people not 1 place in his quotes does he actually say anything about a gears of war title having Natal support. He said future games they make will support it he says NOTHING about GOW! The poster of the article from the original website is just guessing. He clearly states the ENGINE will support it I quote "I have no idea where we're going from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff and we will support it". There you have it. They will add Natal support to the unreal engine obviously as they hire this engine out to other devs and it would be madness not to add support for it. Thye are not saying they are adding it to the new Gears game

Alcon Caper3299d ago

seriously. what a crap title. he never says that gears of war will support natal.

the article title is misleading.

The Meerkat3299d ago

So will I be able to put my couch in front of my TV and pop up from behind it every time I want to take a shot.

Could be fun........for about 5 mins.

Tony P3299d ago

This kind of article is the sport of hit seekers and flamebaiters. It just proves further that you can take a quote and put it in any context so long as you're willing to stretch the truth. This is almost an outright lie.

-The REAL question asked-

Q: "Are you currently focusing on allowing your licensees to use Natal better, or have your studios had any time to start experimenting with the dev kits?"

A: "Actually, we're just sitting down with them in the next two weeks I think, to bring our studio guys in to have a look. I have no idea what we're going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff and we will support it. I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support. We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform."

-The question asked specifically about Gears and Natal-

Q: "Do you think Natal has applications for traditional hardcore games, such as Gears of War or Halo?"

A: "Yeah, I can totally see myself sitting in front of my TV using Natal to play games like Gears of War, Call of Duty, or whatever first-person shooter with my buddies. I want to do a hand signal that tells my friend, "Go over there." Instead of even saying it on Live, I just want to motion, "Go over there." Or if I want to throw a grenade, I just lift my right hand off the controller, throw the grenade, then put my hand back on the controller.

I don't think we're going to change the hardcore experience that so many people love so well. Look at Gears of War, we sold over 11 million games - people clearly like that kind of experience. Call of Duty sells millions every time it ships. People clearly enjoy that experience. You wouldn't change Halo, but you could, if you had Natal, at least to simplify some of the controls.

In other words, you could get away with a simpler control scheme, as it's really easy to remember throwing a grenade when it's really throwing. I can see that working in multiplayer games, then you get your hand right back on the controller and keep playing, stuff like that, maybe a wave, maybe a taunt. I'm sure that when more people have this technology you'll see some of the hardcore games adapt to it.

But I don't think it's necessary, I don't think that's their goal, I don't think you need Natal for that kind of game. The thing I like is selecting your movies by swinging your hand, right and left, that just seems so natural and obvious, and that's kind of what you do with your own DVDs, you go, "Uhh, which do I want?"

A lot to read, I know. But if you're not here to read news on News 4 Gamers, I don't know why you bother showing up.

Hoolock3299d ago

Game designers arent stupid, christ theyre gamers like all of us. They know its not fun to dance around and pretend to be in cover. Im intrested to see what they do but the article makes out intergration will be minimal. I just wish people would calm down, no one is going to dance round the room for hardcore games and they know this.

jcgamer3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

N4G in 2010 will be CRAAAZAAY...

lol :)

lowcarb3299d ago

Natal is not the same thing as the wiimote or eyetoy. It's controller less which is completely different. Eyetoy and wii mote are nothing more than 360 and ps3 wireless controllers with a different shape. There's a lot of potential here which hopefully one day you understand.

PS3 slim3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

It's going to me a day to figure out what is making the PS3 fanboys mad this time.

It would be nice to give voice commands to the AIs in Gears of War 3 and other Epic games.

EDIT

I figured it out and posted the answer in the original comment. The PS3 fans are mad because they hate Natal and Epic said "Future Epic games will have Natal support" excluding possible future PS3 games or PS3 versions of them.

Elvfam5113299d ago

sell the game with a lancer gun and use that like the game House of the dead in the arcade

DarkTower8053299d ago

Check it out, how lame!!!

The-Warranty3299d ago

LMAO!!! That should be fun!!

lowcarb3299d ago

I remember that clip lol. That's to freaking funny. Honestly i wouldnt be caught dead playing a game like that unless it was maybe karaoke night or I could scan in a gun.

DarkTower8053299d ago

@lowcarb, that's actually the first time I've seen the clip, believe it or not. I was rotfl so hard, especially towards the end where she goes off. Good stuff.

But yeah, I think it would be more of a karaoke type party thing more than anything.

artsaber3299d ago

Bubbles for that! That was my first time seeing that too. It was hysterical! I couldn't imagine playing a game like that. You could NEVER keep a girlfriend... imagine her walking in on that moronic sequence. Granny sounded like a chicken by the end of the video.

jav09183299d ago

just because the game will have natal support does not mean the game will be made wrong. I mean even after all the glitches and stuff it could be retarded but no one ever put a gun to your head and said you have to play the game using natal. No one ever said its mandatory. Especially in a big game like gears I doubt natal will be mandatory.

pixelsword3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

I say above average because the motion controls for UT III on the PS3 had mixed results: the hooverboard had excellent controls, but the redeemer controls were too sensitive.

So i am confident if done right, it could be above average to excellent, depending on the degree of integration they choose to implement; although I will hate to see how many people might throw their controllers into their televisions on accident.

JokesOnYou3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

Natal articles are filled with ps3 loyalists who spew out the same old nonsense.

"not cool at all", really? lol, Thats not what Epic's Rein said:

"I have no idea what we're going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it's definitely cool stuff and we will support it."

-hmmm so should I believe the head man at Epic about Natal's potential or should I believe a (dup)firezone who's already proclaimed in previous posts "I believe Sony's wand will win the competition." ???

-From there, of course those who are first to rush in and comment on Natal are the same ones who've shown the most hatred for Natal in the past, and yep its the same old comments, that sound as if they cut & pasted from the SDF Natal-haters talking points list(likely found under the "Halo-haters talking points")lol....most of it is obviously pure nonsense, clearly fabricated by their own brand loyal emotions but whats funny about it is that their criticism falls flat when you actually read/listen/understand what the devs are saying:

"I can't wait to come home from a hard day and jump around my living room like a hyperactive toddler, ducking behind furniture and holding my fingers like a pretend gun." -darkride66

Mark Rein:
"I don't think we're going to change the hardcore experience that so many people love so well. Look at Gears of War, we sold over 11 million games - people clearly like that kind of experience. Call of Duty sells millions every time it ships. People clearly enjoy that experience. You wouldn't change Halo, but you could, if you had Natal, at least to simplify some of the controls."

"In other words, you could get away with a simpler control scheme, as it's really easy to remember throwing a grenade when it's really throwing. I can see that working in multiplayer games, then you get your hand right back on the controller and keep playing, stuff like that, maybe a wave, maybe a taunt. I'm sure that when more people have this technology you'll see some of the hardcore games adapt to it."

Keiji Inafune, Capcom: "its a challenge for us to produce something beyond what we are used to doing. Iam certain Natal will bring that change. This doesn't mean its being replaced, but rather, its being enhanced."

Masanori Takeuchi, From Software: "I hope to expand the current gaming experience, rather than evolve gaming into something irrevelant to current games. But with Natal this becomes a possibility."

Kojima, Kojima Productions: "Natal is something “like the 2D to 3D shift, or the first time that I ever played with Family Computer [NES],”

Yozu Sakagami, Namco Bandai: "We are excited like kids with a new toy. Everyone on the team was coming up with new ideas."

Keisuke Kikuchi, Tecmo: "Our team has started planning for games to play on Natal, and we came up with 72 ideas all together."

http://www.joystiq.com/2009...

-lmfao, WOW! it doesn't sound like "ducking behind furniture" and all that nonsense you portray it to be, but lets be honest many of Natals detractors only TRY to charachterize it that way, as some insanely tiresome and gimmicky experience because its evident that Natal has tremendous potential to add some great gameplay value to all types of games, Natal's getting alot of attention, not only are big time western devs like Epic very interested but also alot of Top Janpenese devs, who are pledging to support it.

=For most normal and hardcore gamers alike everything said here by these devs about Natal would be cause for at least positive anticipation, but NOT for fanboys, because in their twisted they dont want anything to succeed in enhancing our gaming experience if it does not have the ps logo attatched.

Stop the hate, being jealous of Natal just because its not on sonys platform is just stupid.
_____________________________ ________________
btw, vhero "He said future games they make will support it he says NOTHING about GOW!"

-I understand your overall point, however he did speak about Gears if you read the entire original interview.

Q: Do you think Natal has applications for traditional hardcore games, such as Gears of War or Halo?

A: "Yeah, I can totally see myself sitting in front of my TV using Natal to play games like Gears of War, Call of Duty, or whatever first-person shooter with my buddies."

JOY

Lifendz3299d ago

to watch youtube vids of people using Natal to play Gears. Let the laughs begin

darthv723299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

you play like you always did but then coming across access terminals and using your hands to simulate pressing in key codes. It isnt like they will make this into a holodeck game (although...that would be cool too) but rather at certain points require virtual input instead of watching a cut scene doing it for you.

By removing some things you press a button for and making them more interactive lets the devs use the buttons for more meaningful purposes.

Man, the haters just want to hate even if it is something that they will never play themselves.

4Sh0w3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

They might be laughing at you, instead of with you.

People should wait and see what Natal has to offer before declaring it a failure. Why do people who clearly favor the ps3 side of the fence hate Natal so much? Why not avoid Natal news when you've already made it clear the last time you commented on Natal that you don't like it?

Great post JOY.

ThanatosDMC3299d ago

Why would you want to let go of your controller while playing Gears to do a hand signal? That's just suicide or just having your body asked to be chainsawed.

4Sh0w3299d ago (Edited 3299d ago )

Are you being serious? Nevermind the fact that Gears is a tactical shooter where you move from cover to cover, and thus you could give voice and yes hand signals while doing so, but really thats sort of a really weak criticism imo, since not every moment in anygame do you have to be holding the controller with both hands at all times, I've played my fair share of games on every platform and never played a game that intense, besides if its built from the ground up with Natal it should be a seemless part of the gameplay experience and a wave of the hand only takes a second.

mal_tez923299d ago

I'm just wondering howsomething gimmicky like Natal or Eyetoy would work in a shooter game. My guess is that it doesn't work, and is just used in order to promote Natal's "many uses".

Shepherd 2143299d ago

who said anyone was jumping for joy? Im a Gears fan and i certainly do not want this. I do not want motion controls for gaming, it imprecise and feels less competitive. I dont want my arms to be all up in the air when i plan my games. I chose the 360 over the Wii because i hate motion controls. So why is Microsoft not acknowledging the decision customers made when they purchased a 360? Hardcore owners are the Xbox's core strength, and over the past couple of years they have not been catering to the hardcore fans like they should.

Great, just great...

SDF sure were quick to cover their ears and start screaming while jumping up and down.

it's as if Natal is the monkey under their bed

ROFL

Thugbot1873299d ago

Why the hate and the games not even here. If they do something dumb with it yes by all means call it out. However if they enhance GOW and makes a something cool i'm all for it.

I'm going to sit back and let them do there job which is to inovate and create a good game for me to play. As a customer I will tell them if I like it or not when I play the game.

DevastationEve3299d ago

Pennywise, what's hardcore about sixaxis, ps3eye, and a wand then, tell me!

The same arguments you guys are using against Natal can be used against PS3's gimmicks. But because it's Xbox it's got to fail. This site is so much of a joke that I can't believe somewhere out there is a proud admin of the servers that run this place.

N4G RIP POS SOL FUD, TTYL WTF?

IaMs123299d ago

This better just be an OPTION an OPTION nothing more, better not be mandatory because at the sametime it freaking awesome if they can pull it off.

What im starting to think tho is companies are going to incorporate both motion and controller at the same time. EX. you move and shoot with the controler but yell commands or motions to do other stuff that you do not have enough buttons on the controller to do.

Christopher3299d ago

Natal support could mean just navigating menus with your hands rather than the controller and similar functions.

Alvadr3299d ago

No good can come of this

thesummerofgeorge3299d ago

I'm sure you'd have to use a controller withit too... I think Microsoft is a little bit lost without a plan. I certainly don't wanna jump around my living room.

jjohan353299d ago

I really don't care if they have Natal support or not as long as I can disable it and use my controller. I'd also like more ONLINE support to fix all the buggy issues with Gears of War 2. Bring it back to the roots of Gears of War 1, the true epic game of 360.

Raoh3299d ago

interesting..

this to me means more that the next xbox console is closer than we think

first the ballmer slip up of the next console release..

then the pricing of natal like a console comment

microsoft likes to copy but they want to be first next console gen, so even if nintendo and sony dont need to enter the next generation, microsoft would and say they are the next generation

and epic said there will be no gears of war until the next console generation, that it would use unreal engine 4 that will not be ready until the next gen of consoles, and now if the next gears is going to use natal coming out next year, then one could assume new gears and console winter 2010/2011?

corneliuscrust3299d ago

article MERELY said that it would have price cuts similar to how a console gets the same treatment, NOT that it would enter the market at a console pricepoint.

Between that misleading title and now this one, this place has become like DIGG... people just read the headlines and comment on what they assume the damn article was talking about

what the hell.

Troll_Police3299d ago

Flail your arms for a chainsaw kill?

betrayed gamer3299d ago

if anyone thinks natal is going to replace the original controls they must be extremely dumb. it says it will support natal, it doesn't mean that it will use the camera for the core gameplay, most likely it will use the voice support for your team, and maybe use the camera to plot routes like when you separate from your team and break into two teams you can choose your path that way.

thegood333299d ago

You really think in 20 years we are going to be using controllers still? C'mon, lets evolve as a species, shall we?

jmare3299d ago

While you have a point that no one knows yet what the functionality will be, you're dumb if you think it will just be voice commands. Those can be accomplished with a mic so what would be the point of Natal? Developers need to make new games and gameplay based on the motion controls, not try to shoehorn games into them; which is what it seems like they are doing.

ceedubya93299d ago

Even if its not just voice commands, there could still be uses for Natal for the game that are very subtle and don't take away from the "hardcore" experience of the game.

People on here hear about Natal possibly being used for game and they automatically assume that the developer is throwing the controller away.

We just have to wait and see what's in store for these new motion controls for our HD consoles. Its too early to judge and jump to far out conclusions.
