PlayStation LifeStyle-Demon's Souls Review

PlayStation LifeStyle writes- Demon's Souls is a PS3 exclusive action RPG from developer From Software and Published by Atlus. Demon's Souls takes place in a world where Demons have gone Berserk, leaving your character the task of eradicating them and saving the world. Does your Hero have what it takes to save the world or are some things better left to die?

Upon firing up the game for the first time, you are greeted with an intro video and then a character creation page. You begin with the option of name and gender, then move onto the class and appearance. Their are 10 class choices in the game and they are Soldier, Knight, Hunter, Priest, Magician, Wanderer, Barbarian, Thief, Temple Knight and Royalty. Each class starts with different attributes points, for example the Soldier starts with 12 endurance while the Magician starts with 10. So each class gives you a very different feel on the game and how its played. Now you move to the appearance where you can choose to edit your characters Origin, Age, Hairstyle and Color. If you want to go deeper into this you can edit details such as forehead, eyes, Nose, Cheeks, etc. My guy just happened to be a male hunter with pink hair.

There are no "real" classes in the game but starting equipment. A knight with great armor can easily transition to a full pledge mage or become a mage knight but then again you'll need to have acquired a wand or amulet to cast spells.

For those that will struggle in the game because of the lack of healing items... raise your luck stat. The higher the more items are dropped and their rarity. Dark Moon Grass are the best ones, if i remember correctly. 15 luck is more than enough to get you through your first game but you wont get those special ores/stones to upgrade your weapons/shields.

I hope there's a sequel but more open world and more F-up bosses and levels.

Yes, im excited that there will be more people online. I'm staying around lv 85 and will be killing people as a Black Phantom. Prepare to cry after our fight when you see how much you'll have to pay in the shop. I spam the Acid Cloud spell.

MazzingerZ5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

not for this review but Gamespot's!....it's out now, they spoiled a surprise in the game so you are all warned for whenever is posted here.

poeo5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

acid cloud is for weak fighters, and pussies.

i fought some loser spamming Acid Cloud and using Scraping Spear for like 20 minutes, he destroyed all 6 of my weapons that i was carrying and my armor... but still couldnt kill me. so i got bored and two-handed my shield and just played around with him until i got REALLY bored and jumped off a cliff rather than fight that boring fight until the end. (it would have lasted forever since he didnt have skills to kill me and i couldnt kill him cos all my sh*t was broken).

so yeah, ACID CLOUD FTL. be a man and two-hand a katana.

aaronisbla5314d ago

Last i checked, in an interview with atlus, they said the servers will be different for american players and that others in different regions wont be able to play with them for that same reason you just mentioned, higher levels gaining up on newer players. I could be wrong though, the interview was posted on the playstation blog awhile ago.

Pennywise5314d ago

Sorry - Have to say it. Another guy marking this game down because he is a noob. Get good or get lost!!!

I read the whole review and the only fault is its difficulty. Maybe they should of added the POP feature of never dying. That would make people happy - RIGHT?

Fishy Fingers5314d ago

Well that's the disadvantage of a 5 point scale, either he gives it perfect scores or hands over the second highest mark available and people take it as him marking the game down.

ThanatosDMC5314d ago

Hey Penny, what lv were you when you stopped? I saw you for a couple of weeks everyday playing the game on PSN. Damn, we should have fought.

Trexman895314d ago

well this can't be a review for only people that are good at video games, it has to be for everyone. The fact that not only do you lose your souls, but you lose your body and start with half-health, is going to be very frustrating for a lot of people. So, you can't give the game a perfect score with that in mind.

Mr_Bun5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

I find that people have come to expect instant gratification with little risk with the current generation of video games...This game flips that on it's head.

It is a true trial and error game that penalizes you when you fail. The upside is that it is very rewarding when you accomplish almost anything in this game. I found it frustrating at first, but fun at the same time, keeping me coming back for more.

For people who always choose 'easy' difficulty on games, this is not for you....for the rest of you, the challange will drive you to beat the game multiple times.

Edit:

1 more thing....if you think this game is tough with an English manual, try figuring it out in Japanese like many of us who imported it did.

ThanatosDMC5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

I imported the Chinese version with full English support.

Also, people forget that besides the whole getting your max HP cut in half when you die... your World Tendency actually shifts to Black. The more the Archstones and/or the Player shifts to Black the stronger the enemies become and the more percentage of max HP is cut from your life.

Getting to Pure Black is the only way to kill the Prime Evil Demons... err... whatever those weird looking demons are called. One of the couple of ways to get the Colorless Demon Soul upgrade.

Pennywise5314d ago

I was lvl 148 or 150 I think. I am thinking about getting the US version with its new trophy set!

lukeb4dunk5314d ago

While the Asian version had full english support ingame, it still had a Chinese manual, with only a little English cheat sheet explaining basic move sets.

I am also thinking about getting the US version. I've been going back and forth, and can't really decide if I should or not. It's been months since I last played (since I got the platinum and did everything there was to do in the game), so it may be nice to get back into it and with a new trophy set to go for. The only problem is how and when could I get it. With Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank coming out this month, my gaming budget will be about shot.

Pennywise5314d ago

Luke, rent it... Return the import. lol.

DoucheVader5314d ago

Japanese have a different view of challenge then Americans. They have a much higher tolerance for a higher challenge. When Atlus brought this to the states they should have kept that in mind.

Whitefox7895314d ago

Reminds me of when DMC 3 came out then they had to release the special edition to tone down the difficulty even though it was still a very difficult game!

Whitefox7895314d ago

sheesh man when I get the US version I'm going to have to work hard so you won't hand my a$$ to me

BlackTar1875314d ago

DMC as well. If its possible then keep it. I know the kids of today cant take the repeat and learn part anymore but for the rest of us. I prefer hard i hate putting a game on HARD diff and running through it like it was easy 98% of all games out now. I remember the 3 lives for the whole game and cheap enemys tested your skill your memorization your pactience i liked it now its like quick hide so i can auto spawn life again. And im not saying im not having fun anymore or i have a problem with the auto heal thing just saying the game was made this way and DMC leave it be if its to hard get some skills lol Im j/k

Game on people

ThanatosDMC5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

I balanced my character on speed and armor and i switch between two swords. I spam Acid Cloud spell just to annoy the opponent later even more after he kills me or i kill him. Since depending on the armor, you could end up paying upwards to 8,000 or more souls for each armor part. That's 40,000 souls down the drain just for armor repairs.

lv 150... geez, if i go too high... it's impossible to find a player that still doesnt know how to fight properly not to mention the higher the level the more the fights become dirty, which means i cant toy with them since i'd have to fight seriously.

@ Whitefox789

I loved DMC3 the first version when it came out. The first boss kicked my butt all over the place and i was happy. Then i bought Special Edition just for Vergil. I ownt Bloody Palace with him. Also, i actually help from time to time as a Black Phantom... then when they Host trusts me and shows his back to me. I KILL HIM DEAD!

Whitefox7895314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

hehehe that does sound like you!

That's why I like ya :D

Ohh BTW I love DMC 3 too :) I got the DMC 5th Anniversary Edition that came with the special edition and even still I had difficulties with Cerberus it only motivated me like Vergil "Now you got me motivated!".

VERGIL and DANTE FTW!

@ BlackTar187

Yes I do remember such frustration as well from the old NES Ninja Gaiden games (dang birds knock me down a cliff >:( ) and Sonic The Hedgehog especially in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 when you fight Robosonic.

Regrettably enough for games instead of them being insanely hard and you coasting yourself into the difficulty they have to balance it out so they don't pi$$ the gamers off (and reviewers I'm looking at you Gamespot, they said that was the only downside to Demons Souls!) personally me whenever I get a game I jack it up to the highest difficulty its got. One game that probably had the best difficulty system for everyone was God Hand for the PS2 depending on how good you were doing in the game the combat either got harder or easier for the player.

Lifewish5314d ago

the difficulty is part of the game, so why should it not be taken into account when reviewing the game?

Deamon's souls Difficulty FTMFW!

gamingisnotacrime5314d ago

What happens when the PS button is pressed?

The lack of pause can be a huge problem for many of us in normal gaming conditions.

Myst5314d ago

It just opens up the XMB, believe me I tried. Just have to kill the enemies in the area and find a corner/safe spot to hide in for a while and take care of what needs to be taken care of.

gamingisnotacrime5314d ago

lol

this game is intense, i never thought a developer would have the guts to eliminate the pause option altogether

I might get this mother after all
I enjoy unique gaming experiences :)

Baliw5314d ago

And dont do that if you are alive or some Black Phantom could kill you.

Love this game.

Myst5314d ago

Yeah I forgot about the black phantoms..so far I've been lucky by not running into any of them. Thankfully :p.

@Gamingisnotacrime:

Hmm, I think there is another game out there that took out the pause function as well, I just can't remember which one it was...Trust me get the game!

(So far I've been recommending a bunch of people to get it, PSN, Here, and don't need to on playfire most already have or already are getting it.) As it stands now, this game is a must have/must play, like most people say for Uncharted. One of those games you just have to experience :D

Aquarius5314d ago (Edited 5314d ago )

that is really focking stupid, they better patch the game because thats unacceptable. I can't ask the controller to play for me if I go out of the room.

What if someone calls you out of the room, just to have a little conversation and the conversation drags on -_- etc.

Starting a new game again is ridiculous.

That doesn't make any sense. The PS button was made for that sole purpose and now they take it away...

EDIT: @below What is the definition of pause??????????!!!!!

EDIT2: @ the below person who pressed disagreed too. Are you trying to say I don't think before I speak because I don't think you realised its offline too. I ain't going to list the reasons why I would be interrupted because that is random, if you didn't realise!!!!!!!!

JonnyBigBoss5314d ago

If you think not being able to pause is a huge deal then don't buy this game. We can't underline enough just how hard this game is. On the bright side, it's arguably one of the most rewarding games of all time as well.

poeo5314d ago

it's meant to be played online. how do you pause an online game? how do you pause invaders? or other people's ghosts or their messages?

how the f*ck would pause work in this or any other online game?

people please think a little.

Lifewish5314d ago

another option is to get to safe spot and quit back to the main menu. It will keep your guy where he is

Why Soulsborne Games Are So Popular Despite Being So Difficult

Soulsborne games are infamously difficult. But why has that difficulty been the secret sauce to success for many of these titles in the genre?

GamesAsAService78d ago

Rewarded effort feels good.

Starting out bad at something and getting better with practice makes accomplishments meaningful.

Getting through these games feels like a journey of self improvement, lol.

You only have yourself to blame if things go poorly, but in a similar way overcoming challenge is similarly a function of your own growth.

franwex78d ago

I think because the games are fair. Gamers can tell that it’s due to their own abilities and not some BS.

jjb198178d ago

I've always loved the sense of adventure and wonder in these games. There's no hand holding, there are surprises and traps everywhere and you have to figure out what some items do. Beating a heide knight was like an accomplishment for me the first time and it felt good to earn that sword he dropped. I've spent hundreds of hours in souls games ever since Kings Field on PS1. The lore is incredible and it makes you think about the history of the world you're in. I can't wait for Shadow of the Erdtree.

SyntheticForm78d ago

It's the recipe of fair difficulty, presentation, boss battles and lore that attract me to these games. The From Souls games have always had a nebulous quality to them that I find fascinating. Demystifying them is a big part of the fun.

OhReginald78d ago

I think its the atmosphere and gameplay. Each of these games unique ways to play and unique settings/atmospheres that are in a league of its own.

Demon's Souls - Here's Why We Are Excited

The first look at gameplay from Demon Souls was shown off at the PlayStation 5 showcase a few days ago. Here's why we are excited for it.

Because it's a full blown next-gen from the ground up remake of one of the best games ever made, what more could anybody want?

1312d ago
SullysCigar1311d ago

This. It has legendary status among gamers for a reason. Technology has come a long way since, and we now get to combine the two!

Newcomers in particular are in for a real treat!

robtion1312d ago

Having finished it back at release on PS3 (I even imported it from the US as it didn't release in Australia initially), I am excited to play again but hope it has some significant changes, fresh content, updated mechanics as it does show its age being the original souls game.

KwietStorm_BLM1312d ago

Significant changes like what?

P_Bomb1312d ago

I wonder if we’ll finally be able to access the broken arch stone? Surprise new level?

Sunny123451312d ago (Edited 1312d ago )

When I first ordered it 12 years back I didnt like it, when I really got into it, I loved it and didn't get up until I got the platinum trophy for it.

Flame lurker still haunts me sometimes. And that crystal lizard farming with 1 in a mil drop rate.

Cant wait to do it all again with no load times, next get graphics and higher fps.

Mithan1311d ago (Edited 1311d ago )

Agreed. The 6th area they never released in Retail would be nice.
Few more bonfires on select runs would also be nice, as dying was worse than the boss.

My prediction is they will make some fixes, but it will be controversial with fanboys bitching and whining about how it "ruined the game".

I pre-ordered the game so far for $830. Comes with a PS5 ;)

1311d ago
Mithan1311d ago

To Stevej336:
Canadian Prices. $630 for the PS5 plus tax.
My PS5 cost me $705. Then another $90 for the game pre-order.

I should have said $795, not $830.

NEXUS-61312d ago

Everything about Demons Souls screams next gen - something that cant be said for many supposed next gen titles. Souls games now have a cult following and DS is the one many haven't played. This is going to be HUGE for Sony and PS5. The marketing should be hitting overdrive around this game.

Rambokind1312d ago

It's the only reason why I'm buying the PS5 at launch. Cannot wait to play this game.

The FOMO Club - Huge Titles Passing You By? That's OK

The 'fear of missing out' is a natural trait of us social creatures. Of course, most of us naturally manage our FOMO because we have no choice. We can't play everything.

The FOMO kicks in pretty much every time a new game gets released. Somehow I’ve managed to resist buying RE3 and Doom Eternal though. It’s Desperados 3 that’s calling me right now though.
