Ubisoft CEO sees Sony's console lead weakening

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Corp. risks losing its iron grip on the game console market with its new PlayStation 3 and needs to significantly lower the price on its high-end machine to woo buyers, Ubisoft Entertainment's (UBIP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research chief executive said on Wednesday.

With Sony's decision to price the PS3 out of the average gamer's price range (even for its lower end, 20 GB PS3) and the lack of several AAA launch titles (which would've been alright IF the XBox360 didn't launch a year before, and the Wii didn't launch with the awesome Zelda: Twilight Princess).

I got a PS3 so early, because of my trust in the Playstation brand in the last two generations. I have played the most time on my PS1 and PS2, compared to any other console I own so far (and YES, I DO own more than just Sony consoles: Super Nintendo, N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Xbox, PS1, PS2, PS3). I decided to buy the PS3 first (first, being the key word here), because they have the upcoming games I want:

Ninja Gaiden Sigma (which I will still buy despite me owning NG: Black on Xbox), Ratchet and Clank: ToD (my favourite PS2 franchise), Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus III, White Knight Story, MGS4: Guns of the Patriots, Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, and Devil Mary Cry 4 (which I am aware that it will be on the 360 too).

Other inevitable franchises I want: God of War, Dragon Quest (X, probably), Star Ocean, Shadow Hearts, etc.

As you can see, I'm a big RPG fan (for Japanese-style ones in particular, though I do love the occasional Diablo, Dungeon Seige, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic).

Of course, I want to eventually purchase the Xbox360 AFTER Microsoft has dealt with all the "Red Rings of Death" and disc scratching issues (therefore, I am waiting for them to switch their CPUs to 60 nm chips to reduce heating problems). I honestly can't wait to play their current and upcoming games: Halo 3, Mass Effect, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddysey, Gears of War.

Then there's the Wii (which my bro will purchase late summer). It's the console with the least amount of games I am looking forward to, and, just like the N64 and Gamecube, I am only looking forward to the Nintendo-made games: Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, Donkey Kong, etc.

don't have much to say about this because it is true. You'd be in denial if you didn't think so.

START . SONY had most of the MARKET with the PSone/two. The 360 is a much better competition then the Dreamcast, N64, Saturn, JAG, 3DO, was during those times. NINTENDO stayed afloat with POKEMON crazy and GBS.

1. I acknowledge Competition and I ACCEPT it. Fanboys loyalist can't seem to make a mends with themselves or accept the FACT SONY is not alone anymore. Jeeze, even I had SONY's both last gen COSNOLES and see this. BUT I was never some Loyalist. NOT sure where it came from. THE PS was not my first CONSOLE and sure won't be my LAST of choice.

2. AFTER the Xbox came into the MARKET, a lot of fanboys were screaming they should quit, since it did not take over the PS2 right away and it lost a lot of MONEY. WELL, that was not MS's goal with the XBOX. Granted it had some great graphics but came into the INDUSTRY late.(All gamers new was SONY for the most part. Of course it did not die in vain. Look at where we are today.

3. The same way SONY and PS3 is loosing lots of MONEY early on(because of strategy to come in late), just as the XBOX console did, I would hope Gamers look at it as a LONG-TERM INVESTMENT as they do with SONY. THE only difference is SONY is the MARKET-LEADER so their LOSSES means a lot more, because it could mean the difference of a GAMER "jumping" in the to COMPETITION.

4. Just as MS Windows has a serious grip on the OS market, just as SONY did a couple years ago. THE thing is I still do not see any SERIOUS competition to challenge WINDOWS. I'm not talking about Linux wanna bees either.
CONSOLES will be on EVEN FOOTING this gen, while I still give SONY the EDGE because of it's past fanbase which is still strong. Just don't tell that to MS because it full steam ahead, and we will see another XBOX.

5. COMPETITION is great for the Industry and games. keeps DEVELOPERS on their TOES, as they will be challenged, by all three CONSOLE's ARCHITECTURE. WHO really cares which one has the EXTRA FLOP, because HARDWARE SPECS allow DEVELOPERS to dream about it whats possible, but as we all know all DEVELOPERS are not created EQUAL..Don't expect to see every game looking like Gears of war or Motorstorm. Just don't be bash that games that do not and let the developers be.

END . I just hate the bashing of the 360, its a great console, and reliability will get better. This is MS's 2nd chance at HARDWARE,ASK NINTENDO how they got better at HARDWARE. When back in the days I used to be close to beating a game only to have that dreaded continuous "LOOP" after the game heating. I'll never forget that when I was at level 60 or so on GAUNTLET. REMEMBER all the little tricks to get your game cartridge to work?

Every console generation is a fresh start. Especially when you lose all of your exclusives and your system goes from the least expensive to the most by 30% without any perceivable 30% value increase. It is just common sense.

I don't believe a price drop will even change things that much. Sony has already lost a massive amount of money on the PS3 and if they drop it by 100 dollars the gap will just increase. But a 100 dollar decrease isn't going to even put it close to the mass consumer price range. 500 dollars is to expensive for most people. The PS2 didn't hit huge until it got in the 200$ range.

It might help push a few extra sales, however I don't believe it will create a spike in sales.

Not to mention Microsoft will just follow. If Microsoft would just drop their price, finally, I might buy one, but being a broke ass college student, I still see 400$ being to expensive for a console.

I kind of see what you mean about the drop in price (by a $100 or less) will only create a spike, but not a longterm boost in sales.

Look at the Gamecube: when they dropped it to $99, the sales skyrocketed, but 2 months later it returned to selling a low number of units.

HOWEVER, even if the PS3 sells a LOT in only two months, then lowers, it will still sell at a far higher rate than what they are at right now in the three major regions (North America, Europe, and Japan). Furthermore, unlike Gamecube, where the price was ALREADY lower than the PS2 and Xbox before the drop to $99, a MUCH LARGER population of the gamers know the Playstation brand. Remember, the PS1 was responsible for bringing the console gaming industry into the mainstream, not the Super Nintendo (though I think they had the best AAA games ever for any console to date). Most gamers and non-gamers, thanks to Sony's mass marketing advantage, are at least aware of the Playstation brand and the sheer amount of great games they had.
Furthermore, both the PS1 and PS2 each had an install base of over 100 million globally, versus the Xbox and GC, which each had just under 20 million. A lot of gamers around the world, who aren't as hardcore as us (who visit sites like ign.com, gamespot.com, n4g.com, etc.) are WAITING for a PS3 price drop. The public appeal IS there for Sony's PS3, but the demand is not matching that mainly because, as people have mentioned before me:

1. The price tag
2. The lack of good games (at the moment)

If Sony dropped the price tag of the PS3 by $100 during the time period where they release Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ratchet and Clank: ToD, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, GTA IV, and Heavenly Sword, then they will sell massive amounts of units. They aren't bunching all those release dates around Fall 2007 for no reason (otherwise, the games will kill each other in sales).

It has very little to do at this point with games. Hell the PS3 could have all the exclusives, but at 600$ it's not going to appeal to the majority of consumers. Most people don't have 600$ to drop on a game console like it's nothing. Even at 500$ it might pick up a little but it wouldn't sky rocket.

Sony has put themselves in a hard place by alienating themselves from the mass audience of consumers that bought the ps2 for 200 dollars.

For now, it doesn't matter, and coming from Ubisoft, a company who's been less-than-impressive as far as developing games for Sony's new console, I wouldn't take their word into account.

Sony's making losses sure, but is it really affecting them? Not really. A good look at the stocks shows that they're doing very well, part of that is due to the massive revenues generated by Playstation 3 and its division. That's something a lot of people don't realize, Playstation 3 is generating a lot of revenue, but, its costs are very high. In the end they do make financial losses, however economically they're in great shape.

It's just a phase in the time line of the product life cycle. You start off slow, sometimes making huge losses, but that's a step you have to take, especially when undertaking a huge move in trying to push for a new format (Bluray).

As far as the price point is concerned, it will eventually go down, but probably not at the rate that people expect. They aren't in a rush to bring down the prices, if it will keep them in the red and not make much of an impact on the market. 600$ is a very fair price for a machine like that, it won't be going down anytime soon. Consumers will accelerate the purchases by themselves, they don't need a price cut to entice them to go ahead and buy it. I'm sure the software alone will drive the sales, a price cut is not needed at the present time.

We're best to leave it to Sony's internal financing to figure out where they're headed. They're the only ones that know where their company is going and how they plan on getting there. Sony won't go down without a fight, and they will deliver a fight to the death.

Ubisoft are a PUBLISHER, they dont MAKE games they SELL them to the high street! So banging on about how their quality of programming has decreased is not in their domain of responsibility.

Ubisoft does publish games, BUT they also develop their own games as well. The Rayman series and the TOM CLANCY games were developed by their own internal studios. Splinter Cell games are made by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai (for SC: Pandora Tomorrow). Don't assume that publishers can't be developers as well. EA is, for instance, a third party publisher that also develops their own games from their own internal studios (EA BIG, EA Canada, Criterion, etc.).

So gamers do have the right to bash Ubisoft for allowing their own studios to completely mess up the quality of one of their AAA franchises, Splinter Cell. I honestly hope that they don't do the same to Rainbow Six: Vegas and Assassin's Creed, since they "look" great.

has, in this generation of the console war, been having problems with the PS3, and is apparently so frustrated that they want to see Sony lose this war. Remember, EGM stated in the past that there was a third-party company that wanted to see Sony's PS3 lose. After observing news coming from Ubisoft over the past few months since PS3's launch, it's quite clear they're the ones who want to see Sony lose. Remember, the CANCELLED Killing Day, created a pathetic port of Splinter Cell: DA, and have constantly been delaying all their other Tom Clancy franchises on the PS3. It's clear that they're the only major third-party publisher/developer that has all these "problems" with the PS3, while games from other third-party developers look significantly better than theirs. Yes, Ubisoft DOES have their own development studios, much like EA. The ones I know are: Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai.

I used to be a huge fan of Ubisoft games, but ever since they began to bash the PS3 and not even support their reasons (such as their upcoming Splinter Cell: Conviction, which they "claimed" could not be done on PS3, which is absurd since there are MANY upcoming PS3 games that have far better technology in them), I have lost nearly all support of their games. I refuse to buy any of their games until I see the reviews now, since I no longer trust their quality in PS3 games.

Before everyone starts bashing Ubisoft and labelling them a PS3 hater - you've got to realize that there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that us as the "consumers" don't get to see. People knew of crazy Ken's arrogance but, since he was the top dog, people had to put up with him....now, it's a different story. You have to admit that the PS3 just isn't selling. In fact, every month developers are more enticed to go multi-platform or 360/Wii exclusive. How much easier do you think it is for Microsoft to secure an exclusive than Sony? At least the publisher will recoup some expenses on the 360 at the moment.

I'm a gamer, not a fanboy. I go where the games are. If Sony had delivered on what they'd promised, I'd still have my PS3. Right now, Microsoft's line up is just better (remember that article about how MS had over twice the amount of exclusives that Sony does?). When MGSIV and FFXIII come out (among many others), maybe the PS3 will be worth looking into again, but for most people it's an expensive system with no real decent games (I've played them all and I didn't think that R:FOM was an above average shooter).

Now, you may disagree with this, but it's certainly reflected in the sales. I don't hate Sony, but they really should have thought a little harder about how to retain their killer exclusive line-up from the last generation. The Xbox 360 and Wii's leads are gaining every month and it's going to take some kick-ass games/price drop to close the gap.

Ubisoft can say whatever they like. Does that make then right? Does it make them wrong? Time will tell. The PS3 will get a price drop, the question is when? You also know that when Sony does drop its price so will MS and Nintendo so they are not really going to gain any advantage as the price difference will remain the same.

So if there is not going to be an advantage then Sony should drop the price at a time that makes business sense to them, on their terms, not because some Ubisoft executive thinks they should. Sony is the only one that knows all the facts and is in a position to make that call. Not you, not me, not Ubisoft or anyone else.

I mean its not a hard call to make that if any product was priced lower it would sell better. But there is alot more to consider then simply price alone. How much does your product cost to make versus what your selling it for? What kind of sales are you getting at youur current price point? If there where more games, especially exclusives would that increase your sales? Marketing is another huge one. Who is your product aimed at and how effective is your marketing? Thats probably a hard one for Sony right now since the PS3 is more then just a gaming console this time around.

Last there is brand recognition. Why does the iPod sell so well inspite of the fact you can buy similar devices for alot less? Its called branding and status. Its "cool" to own a iPod. I would imagine trying to determine what will be cool and not cool is hard for any company. Nintendo is a prime example of that right now. The Wii is "cool" and as such is enjoying huge sales because of it. Are the sale generated because of its price point or the "cool factor" of its unique controller? I would suspect its a bit of both but does anyone think if the Wii had launched with its conventional controller that it would be selling like this? Will things like Singstar, Little Big Planet, and Home etc appeal to non tradtional gamers like the Wii controller has?

From my perspective the PS3 is aimed at owners of HDTV's which is a much smaller market then the PS2 or PS1 appealed to when it was released. I already was the owner of a HDTV but it was an older style rear projection that you can't play games on, (screen burn in) so I had to go out and get a new HDTV which was the big expensive part, not buying the PS3. If that is the majority of PS3 buyers or potential buyers then is $100 one way or the other going to move massive amounts of units? I would say a far more compelling reason to buy one would be what can I play on it? I.E. games and movies. So again considering that Sony just had its gamer day and revealed some 34 new games, of which 14 are exclusives, that will be available for the system from here to Christmas, will this be enough of a "cool factor" to move units for Sony? Time will tell.

So I am not saying Sony is doomed nor am I saying Sony will reign supreme again, like some have accused me of doing by offering a different perspective. All I am saying is that there are alot of factors involved in what ultimately ends happening for all 3 consoles. As one analyst said after this Christmas we will have a much better idea of how things are shaping up for all three consoles.

For me personally I am happy with my purchase and even more happy with all the cool games coming out. That's not going to change whether Sony is champ again or not. The most expensive part of owning a PS3 is not going to be the system its going to be the games. Perhaps Ubisoft would be willing to give me a price break on their games, they would sell better you know. LOL

why do you judge the ps3 as if its been out for about 2 or 3 years and, better yet as long as the 1shitty, you expect games like amazing a little over 6 months into ps3s lifecycle, for a machine that if you want to get the true graphics outta the machine you have to invest a large amount of money, but so far there have been none to step up, other than guerilla games, i assure you that when you see killzone you will say sony lied but not in the way that you are thinking, because the game WILL surpass the trailer, do you honestly know how many people will trade in there 1shittyl's and there wiiks for a ps3 when they see the completely next level in graphics, also i can assure you that there are games that will be shown in e3 for ps3 that will even surpass killzone 2, also i have a question, why do all of you say ps3 doesnt have any exclusives i gurantee you will feel mighty stupid if you check wikipedia there are far over 100 exclusive games in the making for the ps3, and even after that i can guarantee that you dont even know games that are going to be a secret that sony WILL surprise you with come e3, also i can assure you the ones that say sony hasnt delivered will you say it after e3, and besides motorstorm it didnt meet the target render, but it looked incredible for 5 months into ps3s life, and with the low budget that the game had, from what i am getting ready to tell you is going to make known that all the target renders for ps3 are easily surpassable, first off the reason why the ps3 is so costly as you call it (i dont see how there is an apple iphone that is comming out this summer and cost well over 600 hundred dollars) but the truth is the genious in the design of this massively powerful machine the thing outta cost well over $10,000, ill tell ya why:

Let me tell you something, the cheapest supercomputers out now is gonna run you for about 10 g's, the only reason that the ps3s cell dont cost that much is because they condensed it, and because they are sacrificing much money, much more than you believe, i cant believe the audacity of many of you that say that sony is ripping you off, they spent over 40 billion dollars on the ps3, before it came out but that aint all that was just for building it the joint operation for the supercomputer on a chip with IBM cost even more billions, and lets not go to the rsx, and then you have blue ray, the thing is how much is microsoft sacrificing, short answer nothing they conserved much money this gen to buy into original sony exclusive titles, yeah you come up with this trash talk of sony losing them thereselves because of lack of games, but that has absolutely nothing to do with it, sony has had other times where sales were low they still yet had developers making exclusives for there machines, but you believe its that but it is really microsoft behind the scenes with efforts to bribe developers that would usually make exclusives only for sony, and so many of you said sony lied this time, i dont think so atleast not for the graphics that the system is capable of, as a matter-o-fact they told you not the half about the graphics that the machine is capable of, and on the subject of microsoft "efforts" as stated before what i mean is this; you see i gurantee you there are other titles that microsoft has attempted to bribe, but the thing is that there are simply some games that the 180 cannot duplicate at all, there WILL be games comming out for ps3 that will look like then better than cutscenes, cg, movies etc. because of the sacrafice that sony made with the machine and also the pure genious and ten year planning and testing to make sure that the next gen ps known as "ps3" wont have to ever worry about cutscenes again, yeah thats right the original plan for the ps3 and still is was to make realtime indistinguishable from the cutscenes, but that was already possible with the cell processor alone that is what supercomputers do(this is for all of you that believe that 180 stands a shadow of a chance against ps3 in graphics, i may seem like it for now, but when developers like the ones for killzone 2 the results can be MUCH different) you see to make cg, cutscenes, movie, and B3yoNd graphics that cost many millions like over 15 million for a short cg film, but the thing is it can cost much more money than that to translate cg into realtime, this is why guerrila games is dishing out 22 million for killzone 2, now the thing is sony went even further than a supercomputer, they included 2 things that supercomputers dont have a mega gpu, ill explain why this gpu is SOO powerfull, do you know that as good as motorstorm looked that games graphics were rendered by the rsx alone, also the cell only used 2 of the 9 processors and that was for physics and a.i. and even framerates, oh and did i mention that they only displayed 10-15% of the 2 processors, now keep in mind that at the time of the developement frame of motorstorm there were no EDGE tools availible, trust and believe the second motorstorm WILL greatly surpass the trailer, and do you also know one secret behind the ps3 and why phil harisson said that no one will ever max out the ps3, here is why:

first there is a thing that some kind of way the builders of the ps3 came up with to make the scpu(supercomputer processing unit) and gpu be able to merge(this hasnt been used yet) now when the merger happens there is an inconceivable occurance that happens:

with merger(this is what delopers truely have at their disposal, and the potential for graphics are unheard of)

sense the cell is a supercomputer, and composses of 9 seperate processors that have a mind of their own and their own power here is what can happen

1 rsx(reality "SYNTHESISER" key word) no one knows what the x stands for, synthesised across 9 seperate processors since processors are not cores and processors contain cores thereselves when this happens there is a new equation

1 RSX * 9 processors = 9 rsx gpus across 9 processors running at 3.2ghz

this is the reason sony said ps3 will never max out, think about it motorstorm didnt even use one of these mergers and achieved that level of graphics, imagine just one rsx on 1 of the 9 processors, that alone wouldve surpassed the trailer, this is why movies always look way better than even cutscenes on games,

Then make all kinds of unfounded predictions yourself? We're judging the PS3 based on how it's performing NOW. Also, by your logic, if the best hardware = the best games, then the PS2 should have been last in the previous generation. The software lineup for the PS3 is sub par, developers are getting skittish, Sony cannot yet confirm that FFXIII will even be exclusive. All of these random 'Sony will win' comments aren't being backed up by the facts as they stand. Time will tell, but that doesn't mean we should just ignore everything that's happening now.

C'mon now, we're talking about one CEO from one multiplatform company making a statement, and everyone thinks the $hit hits the fan. Yes, the price is the highest by far of all the consoles, but i don't think sony dropped the ball by any means. If you look at the figures, they are only 8% below their predicted shipments (5,500,000 instead of 6,000,000). They took a bit of a gamble with the introduction of the blu-ray drive, but i feel like that will eventually pay off. If you add the HDD drive to the 360, the price gap is much less. And yes, enventually, 360 games will require the HDD. Most people are also crapping their pants over MGS4 coming out on 360. The game itself on the ps3 is 50Gb. I dont think the game on 360 will come with 10 DVDs, so a HDD drive will be needed (even that would require 3).

Sony are not making money on the system yet, but that was forecasted, and they were selling the system at a loss (200$) at launch.

Sony probably won't have their lead as they did with the ps2, but i think it's more that fact that other consoles are better, and not that the ps3 is bad. We're less than one year into lauch here and its way to early. People thought the dreamsat would easily win over the ps2. People keep thinking that since ps3 didnt immediately get 90% of the market, the ps3 is a failure. All three next gen consoles are stellar, and thats something that wasn't happened before. The dreamcast was horrendous, the xbox didnt offer enough extra for people to switch, etc.

Consoles prices at lauch are always steep, and the prices will come down to more affordable ranges in due time. I remeber the ps2 costing me 450$ and now its 120$.

I think the technological advances in the ps3 are expensive, but Sony didnt want to lauch another console just for the sake of it. They implemented what they felt would truly be next gen, knowing that the price is high. But already, the price of making the ps3 consoles are comign down, just like any piece of new technology, where they can finally make a profit of them. And then eventually, they can drop the price.

Hey Ubisoft, stop making crappy ports of 360 games for the PS3 and maybe Sony will sell more PS3s. We're tired of seeing garbage ports. The PS3 is too good to get garbage. Hopefully Rainbow Six Vegas will at least be better.

Go look as to what power a G71 has in the PC world and in todays world it's getting old. Funny how when the PS3 arrived with it's G71 core Rsx Nvidia already had the G80 out. Also Cell for the PS3 is a 1core with 7 mini cores. Actually its 8 mini cores but 1 is used for redundency. So it makes it 7. Out of the 7 mini cores 1 is used by the OS that leaves 6 mini cores and 1 main real core for video games. Also remember the SPU cores aren't full cores as they are dependent on the Main PPU. Also alot of people tend to forget that software is the key to make great games. It's the software, game engines, advancements in shaders and pixels. Thats what makes games look as they are today. Funny how console software makers are now licensing PC engines. Square Enix, Sega, and countless others. So Just as a PS3 machine gets better in graphics so will a X360 and ESPecially A PC since they are the top of the graphics board. If the PS3 is to survive 10 years I think is a dumb plan due to graphics 10 years from now will require a whole new set of hardware and a G71 ten years from now will be a Dinosour.
