Ars Technica PSP Go review: Sony is charging you much more, for much less

Ars: "We've finally had a chance to get to know the PSP Go in detail, and here are our thoughts: this isn't aimed at a clear market, it's more expensive in every way, and it takes away the choice of gamers. When your older, cheaper hardware is better and more able than your new offering, you need to fire some designers.

The new, UMD-less PSP Go is an absolute dream for Sony. Since it lacks a way to play games purchased at retail, Sony gets to set the prices for every piece of content bought on the system. Who cares if the store down the street has a game for $10 cheaper? You can only get your games from one place; competition with discounting and used games is gone. Sony will now be selling you every game that goes into the Go's 16GB of storage, and without the ability to buy or sell used games, Sony now owns every single piece of the market with this system. And without an easy way to switch the battery for hacking purposes, piracy won't be as easy."

last i checked they still selling the old psp's, the fact that i can use my DS3 has sold me to get a GO eventually, nobody is forcing you to pick the Go over the other one.. stop with the sony hate already

WildArmed5715d ago

Agreed.
PSP GO isnt aimed at the market where they want to pirate games/ buy/resell game as the review talks about.

Its aimed at the more mobile market. For instance, college gets me to move alot during the week. Its a nice time pass to have this, I d/led new games while i was at college to play on my ride home while in class. Its very convinent to have 16gb storage hdd.
This guy seems to be review sony's market stragedy vs the PSP Go

coolfool5715d ago

Since when is a review Sony hate?
Since when does writing/reading a review mean you HAVE to buy the hardware?

This isn't Sony hate at all. It's just a review, nothing more, nothing less.

Megaton5715d ago (Edited 5715d ago )

Agreed with coolfool. Tired of this misconception around here that anything that doesn't put Sony on a holy pedestal is nothing but biased Sony hate. They're not infallible.

Most people have been saying this thing is about $50 too expensive since it was announced. I mean come on, it's $50 less than a PS3/360 Elite, and $50 more than a 360 Arcade/Wii. There's something fundamentally wrong with that.

Why don't more people do this type of math when it comes to the apple ipod and itouch?! surely you all notice how pricey those devices are by now?!?!...

Megaton5714d ago (Edited 5714d ago )

This isn't about Apple, but for the record, everything they sell is overpriced. That's a universal complaint about Apple I've heard and agreed with for many years, so I don't see where you get the idea that no one ever criticizes them for their prices.

ReBurn5714d ago

So if an article isn't a gleaming review of Sony then it is hate? People need to get over it. The PSP Go is every bit as much of a social experiment as it is a hardware upgrade. As long as I have a choice of the current PSP that's what I'm going to stick with because I like to have more choice, not less. And there is less choice. Fewer retail games available at launch and only one way to get them.

I've had my PSP-1000 for three years and I love it. There's no way I'm going to give up the ability to buy discounted games at retail in favor of a single seller setting all the prices all the time.

SuperM5714d ago

Well for what ive experienced games sold on PSN is almost exclusively cheaper then games you buy in the store so i dont have a problem with sony setting the price.

DaTruth5714d ago

I just want a portable that actually fits in my pocket. I've had my PSP for four years and only have 2 UMD games. Can't stand walking around with this BRICK in my pocket! It is worse than those old Motorola flips! And I still have to carry my Ipod with it, because it is just not practical!

Also, DS3 will actually make me play some PSP games on my PSP, shooters are terrible on the PSP; I can finally buy Resistance!

Since I wasn't buying used games anyways, it won't make a difference to me.

because if you get a 16gb player from them it's going to cost you about the same and it's not going to play PSP games

Superduper095715d ago

Well the PSP Go is what you called a "premium" product. So, it is for those people who have extra cash to spend on.

Personally, I am happy with my old PSP-1000.

diatom5714d ago

Agree.. My clunker psp-1000 is still going strong and still has the heft to pound in a few nails.

yoghurt5715d ago

I have a psp 3000, and I like the fact they have released this as another alternative in the psp family - I may upgrade one day

Its almost like all the journos think this is replacing the whole psps line-up, its not, its a premium version if you like that kind of thing

kraze075715d ago

Going from a PSP3000 to a PSPGO is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

ceedubya95714d ago

As long as UMDs are still available, there really isn't a need for the Go. Memory sticks will continue to get bigger, and you'll be able to download games from PSN anyway.

There is a pretty healthy amount of PSP games on PSN right now though for download. Pretty good list of games so far.

Rifle-Man5715d ago

I don't understand why Sony puts themselves in these situations. Even if they have a plan, they just come off as bumbling and directionless.

The problem with the PSP Go is that if it does just okay, it's great for PSP 3000 owners. If it does very well, it's a threat to the future of UMD.

When I first saw the Go I was so excited I nearly pre-ordered it, but on further examination (I even made a pro/con list) the 3000 emerged as the victor based on price, screen size, cost of games, etc. The Go wins in one area: size. Oh yeah, and you can save the state of your game.

iceman065714d ago

In Japan...it has been this way with technology forever. Size really does matter to the Japanese gaming market. Anytime something is shrunken in size...they just eat it up! This is regardless of whether or not things are improved...or it is just smaller!

andy855d ago

Im definitely going to import it if possible. Hopefully PlayAsia will have it

jznrpg5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@andy85 so you can get it from PlayAsia no Tarrifs but shipping is 23$ at least ,but it is an option. A little less than 50$ with shipping. I had to have it

andy855d ago

Coming out at £44 ($60) here. Jeez as much as I want it that's a little bit of a stupid price. Managed to find it for £35 elsewhere. Still crazy for a mug. Might wait and see if the square Enix store get it

Original Ridge Racer arcade classic coming to PlayStation in June

This will be the first time the original 1993 arcade Ridge Racer has appeared on home consoles.

darthv7224d ago

I hear rumors that Evercade may also be getting a Namco Arcade cart with RR and Tekken on it. That would be sweet as their previous Namco Console carts have also recently been updated to work on the VS. Previously, they only had the license to the handheld. so the OG Evercade and the EXP and even the Alpha were supported, but not the VS.

Am i the only one that wants a Ridge Racer Type 4 Remake?
