Bill Gates: 40 million Vista copies sold

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates gave his last keynote at the WinHEC conference earlier this morning and outlined the success of the Windows Vista operating system. He told the audience of programmers and hardware engineers that Vista sales were "beyond our expectations" and outlined some key features of the upcoming Windows Home Server and the renamed Longhorn Windows Server 2008.

Im not ready for the plunge just yet, i have too much audio software that i don`t think i can trust to work 100%. Though it would be nice for me to have acces to ALL 4gig i have in my machine......In time ill upgrade but happy with XP for now.

That's why Dell and other comp distributors started offering it again.
The only way they could get people to accept Vista was to discontinue XP support. The only thing Vista had that customers gave a rats ass about was DX10, something that could have easily been released on XP and wasn't in order to force the switch.

Maybe in a year or so when they've actually done something about the 8 million bugs reported on the system, and actually allow things to work on it. But definitely not until then.

i heard most vistas being sold were bundled with computers and then downgraded to xp since vista still struggles with compatibility issues

I wont be buying Vista until there is a really good reason, and at the moment with all the compatability issues its really pointless

to buy unless you are looking at buying a new PC or have 360 and want to take advantage of the Media Center functionality (that is VERY highly under-rated).

@1: I have the M-Audio Firewire 410 (supposedly the drivers don't work) but it works fine on my Vista Ultimate PC without a hitch. I also use Adobe Audition 1.5 for my editing, etc. No problems there either.

I like how Vista is similar to OS X. Good form Microsoft to make it more user friendly ^^ Once Vista is about a year old and has some patches and updates no one will remember when it was considered "bad" to upgrade to Vista

I have Vista ultimate and I'm actually quite impressed with it. Far superior networking code to XP for example.

I think vista will sell more in a year or 2 when hardware prices are down a little, and a couple updates fix some of the compatibility problems, and driver issues. All in all the system is pretty nice.

to use apple OS X, i tried vista... is just another improved skin~ just like windows 98 to XP, it is improved... but not much.
MS should create the OS from the zero. their windows is really sux.
the only thing I can't leave windows is because of 3D studio max.

to give us Vista activation figures and not just 'licenses sold'. Not only are very few of the licenses being used in PCs, even more are being downgraded due to the higher popularity of XP. Just look at what Dell had to do.

Dell had to move to provide the option for XP, moving totally to Vista was an odd business decision in the first place.

I'm a long time pc user and Vista is streets ahead of XP.

I first installed Windows Vista on a pc that was 2.4ghz, 512mb ram, and well the video card was CRAP (64MB LOL)
anyway i was very dissatisified

so then I installed Vista on my newer pc
3.2ghz duo core, over 1gb ram, 256mb video card, blah blah blah the good stuff
anyway when you have a good pc that can handle it, vista is amazing
I had no problems with any programs i had on my xp I only had to installed the new version of Nero thats it
Vista is way faster then xp was on my pc
and gui of the o.s. is way better then the xp

once programers upgrade theirs program to be compatible with Vista, alot of ppl will stop crying

I'm running vista ultimate, it's stable and i have no complaints.

I don't even know why numbers on Vista is news, they do batch the program when selling PC's which a lot of people have gone back to XP on.

It'd be interesting to know how many people have actually bought Vista without having it thrown in as a PC package.

XP is where it's at for now. Vista needs another year or two to work out the driver and bugz issues

I seen VISTA and all that but no reason for me to get it right now. Similar to me and the PS3, currently not seeing any benefits to purchase either. Until drivers are optimized and the compatibilitues are fixed.
