ALT+F4 Reviews Halo 3: ODST

ALT+F4 looks at Halo 3: ODST, "Halo 3: ODST is pure Halo for better or worse. Bungie has come up with a new way for you to part with your money but if you haven't bought all the map packs for Halo 3 and like Horde mode from Gears of War 2 then its definitely worth the price. That may not sound like a ringing endorsement but it's the truth. ODST is a good game, of that there is not doubt."

No matter just how much one might love the Halo franchise I think it's best to think that ODST just isn't quite a full Halo experience. MS and Bungie have bulked up the package and the price with added bits and bobs but most vets will own nearly all the MP disc already.

It's why the reviews are so up and down and it's why this isn't ever going to have a meta like Halo3-no matter how many reviewers feel about the series we aren't going to see blanket Halo love this time around. Don't get too up or down about it whether you adore or abhor Bungies opus as the debate is mostly over value and whether ODST can justify it's price tag or shake the feeling that this is an overpriced add-on.

What we have learned is that some sites are willing to go ga-ga over anything Halo while others might have been over eager to find something to moan about. For me I imagine the truth, like OFST's Meta score, will be somehwre between the two extremes. For what we'll get at the price they're asking I'd say somewhere in the 8s(assuming as it seems is correct that it's up to the same quality as usual)is prolly going to end up pretty fair all round.

yeah basically the reviewers have questioned the price...

the 2nd disc only has value if you dont have the map packs already...

but for most reveiws they've said that odst's campaign and firefight is pretty solid and fun...

too bad this game is getting the same meta as halowars

ODST = 83%

halowars = 82%

i think it is underwhelming after all

That is the most sensible post i have read today good sir.

if you base this game solely on how fun it is, it deserves those 9's.
if you base this game on value, you get a significantly lower score.

i'd give it an 8, (I would've given it a 7, but I heard firefight is really fun.)

i would give it a 9 if firefight had matchmaking, instead of just playing with your friends online, but hey, at least they let you do that.

ODST was never gonna set the world on fire but it's something for fans of the series while they wait for Reach next year.

i am dissapointed that they have made no changes to the competative mp what so ever apart from 3 new maps, but i don't have the map packs so it actually works out good value for me.

ODST will be fun, ODST will sell but it's Reach that i can't wait to see more info about

thor5325d ago

Of course it will be fun, but "Tetris" is fun.

If you made a new Tetris game and slapped a hefty pricetag on it, it wouldn't just be an issue of value, it would be an insult to all of the developers putting effort into creating full experiences.

Now it's not as extreme as that, but it's a little bit like it. To be honest, I think the N4G average review score is pretty accurate as 8.3. This should have been left as an expansion. Even then, it's an expansion to a 2-year-old game so will be dated no matter how fun it is to play.

peeps5325d ago

just depends how you look at things. i mean i dunno how long the campaign lasted but the dark mirrors expansion for gow2 was a new single player (sort of) and some new maps for mp. it already had its horde co-op mode so in a way that's similar to ODST but that was a low price expansion.

lost and the damned and soon ballard of gay tony added tons more content but were at a recuded price.

6 hour campaign is a joke! Lower the price to $30 then will talk.

mirroredderorrim5325d ago (Edited 5325d ago )

Yeah. You don't tell your fans that this started out as DLC and try to pass it off as a full game after.
If it started out as a full game with more than half the content being entirely new, then I would think it could be a different story, review-wise. I have never, in my wildest dreams, would think that Halo-anything would be getting so many 8's.

Swagbag shortage confirmed.
