MAG servers buckle under heavy traffic

Earlier today, Zipper Interactive prepped for an influx of new beta participants as the closed MAG beta opened up to Qore annual subscribers, SCEE lottery winners, frequent forum posters, and select media. They also launched a new patch that essentially was comprised of the entire game, so they could further test MAG's higher player count matches. The PlayStation community had counted down to this day since it was announced late last month.

However, a quick look at Sony's track record of launching online multiplayer games and anyone could see that launching a massive 3GB patch while admitting thousands of new players would be a recipe for disaster and disappointment.

<3 beta.
Been there since the first wave :)

Im getting most of the issues are being ironed out.
The servers are getting hammered with the new invites going out, buts thats all good :)

Should be a good stress test

Pandemic5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

I've been in this beta since day one. II reached 1gb out of 2.6gb's with the recent update. The update froze and I restarted the console and once I returned the download went back to 0%, waste of 1gb...

2Negative5488d ago

Keep in mind that the demo is download only where as the data will be on a disk when the real game is released. I'm guessing most of the problems are coming from having so many people trying to download such a large amount of data. If most of the data is indeed on the disk when the game launches, then I doubt we will have problems like this.

PLAYINB3YOND5488d ago

Yeah i have the same problem, update gets to halfway then loses connection with the server and i have to start all over again.

wxer5488d ago

`the updates are in Gigs ???

damn
i hope the full game is not the same thing
i hate big downloads like this

thats why i didnt get in the beta in the first place

Christopher5487d ago

This isn't an update. You're downloading the whole beta application at once. Essentially they're having all persons, including existing beta/alpha testers, download the full game with the latest build.

I do love the complaints about a beta having some issues, though. Gee... I wonder what usually happens in beta...

PROFIT5487d ago

lol, who wouldve thought a beta had bugs?

of course a finished game like odst thats loaded with glitches, will be overlooked in comparison.

funneh flaming journalists.

2Spock5487d ago

Well i know i will get alot of flak for this but i have to state my opinion. IMO the servers is the least of their problems. I was able to play a few games last night and needless to say that is all i will ever play. I understand this is a beta and it has nothing to do with that, the core gameplay seems well...uhhhh....Generic. I played 4 games last night and the biggest game i got into was 32 on 32 so i did not experience the big massive action game. Seems a little in depth with the skill points for upgrades and weapons and such. Gameplay is very basic run of the mill shooter seems to try to take after COD with the feel of controlling your guy but it is not near as fluid. The texture pop-in's are very annoying to me. I can understand having them in a distance but not 10 feet in front of me. The animations are also poorly done. And every game i played the same thing happened every time run to location A and everyone just spam grenades. I think the main thing the game has going for itself is people will play it to LVl all the way and unlock all the weapon perks. I just think there is to many quality titles releasing on my PS3 and this does not scream quality to me by no means. I think the whole 256 people online is the whole selling point to the game which i didn't even experience. This is clearly my opinion and i understand people will see it totally opposite of what i do.

Christopher5487d ago

So, essentially 2Spock, you won't be playing the game again because of what you experienced in beta gameplay 6 months prior to the actual release of the game? Astounding, with testers like you this game will definitely be top notch upon release. Or, heck, won't see improvements because people fail to understand the purpose of beta tests anymore.

2Spock5487d ago (Edited 5487d ago )

As i stated above it goes beyond the beta. They could fix the texture pop-ins and the animations but i still will not play it. The core gameplay element is just generic as i stated above. It has some cool features but the gameplay drowns those features out in a bad way. I mean i never felt as if i was in a squad of anykind i never felt like i was a big part of something. And as testers like me i posted my feedback of what i thought of the game. And i bet there is people who have been playing it since day one that has not posted anything. It is testers like me that get stuff done. And i fail to understand what beta's are for, seriously? seriously? I have been in more beta's than i care to think of and not a single one has struck me this way besides MAG. Sure alot of them have had bug's or glitches or server problems and i was in the Socom beta and with all the problems with it the gameplay never ever struck me as generic. Just cause i don't side with you doesn't mean you have to make me seem like i am some retard that does not know what beta's are and such and trust me it goes way beyond it being a beta, the core gameplay element will never change beta or not.

Christopher5487d ago (Edited 5487d ago )

I'm glad you're not in beta.

Texture popins are things that get fixed during testing.

Animations are things that get finalized during testing.

Core gameplay elements are fully implemented and flushed out during testing. Such as making it so that people don't just go to a spot and spam grenades, for example.

Improving the concept of squad-based gameplay is done during testing.

It's testers like you that play for a bit, post on item on your complaints, then leave and don't look back. You don't get things done, you just stop in, complain, and leave. Real testers provide ongoing feedback on gameplay, bugs, and methods for improving the community/squad aspect.

"the core gameplay element will never change beta or not."

The core gameplay is squad-based combat with 256 total people possible on the battlefield. Anything to enhance that core gameplay can be enhanced during beta. I'm not saying it will, but with your attitude it never will, which is why you should not beta test.

You obviously haven't participated in many beta tests to see how they have made changes to many games, including the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta test which resulted in some quick updates and changes to the game elements in only two weeks. Sure, not everyone makes the game the players want, but there are improvements made during betas, it's ignorant to claim otherwise, especially to the core gameplay if your testers are finding it not up to par.

Remember, this isn't the only beta test of the game, there will be more up until the game's release next year. Why? Because the whole online element has to be worked out so that people feel like they're playing a squad-based game against 128 other people and that people won't just resort to cheap tactics in combat where possible. This isn't a guarantee it will be perfect, let alone great, at release, but your attitude is the wrong one considering how far from release the game is and the type of game it is.

Edit: I'm astounded at the number of people who agree with 2Spock and have no clue what the purpose of beta testing a game is, especially considering that this is a real beta test and not just one thrown out there to give people a taste of the game right before the full release. You guys really should feel ashamed looking at a game six months prior to release in the manner that 2Spock is.

nycredude5487d ago

Spock

Get off the servers then if you don't care about the game. Let someone else get in. From the sound of ityou are just freeloading hoping to get something free to play and since the "beta" is not up to your standards yet you complain and bash the game.

This game maxes out at 256 players so how are you judging it since the biggest game you got into was 30 vs 30? Seriously just go back to playing COD or something.

Most of my friends list who have been in the beta pretty much told me after you play MAG you most likely won't go back to COD. I'm not sure how I will fee about it yet cause I haven't gotten in but I was never a big fan of cod mp anyway so hope MAG turns out good. I know I will do my part in the beta instead of just complaining.

WildArmed5487d ago

the beta contain low-textures to limit the beta size.

But since they are expanding the beta (content wise) the updates are necessary.

the beta has changed a bunch since day 1

PROFIT5487d ago

but everytime i try to, theres all these loops and hurdles

2Spock5487d ago

Once again how genius saying things i have already stated.

"It's testers like you that play for a bit, post on item on your complaints, then leave and don't look back."

Sorry i do not like the gameplay as i stated before it feels generic. You nor your arrogant attitude will not change my mind, i form my own opinion regardless of what you think.

"The core gameplay is squad-based combat with 256 total people possible on the battlefield. Anything to enhance that core gameplay can be enhanced during beta. I'm not saying it will, but with your attitude it never will, which is why you should not beta test."

I know it for a fact it will not change, cause then they would have to start from scratch. You are not understanding what i am saying this is not something that can be changed. As i stated before the game feels generic, has nothing to due with being a beta.

"You obviously haven't participated in many beta tests to see how they have made changes to many games, including the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta test which resulted in some quick updates and changes to the game elements in only two weeks."

I was in the Uncharted 2 beta and there was no major changes to it from now. The gameplay stayed the same, they made minor changes sure. I was in the Socom beta and i played it alot when i was able too sure they made changes but only minor to gameplay. What i am getting at if you have to make major changes to your core gameplay then you have to start from scratch. And as i said before i do not like the core gameplay off MAG.

And i thought the game comes out in January, not April.

@nycredude
Sorry if i ruffled your feathers cause i have a different opinion than your friends considering you have yet to play the Beta, but you feel strongly about voicing your opinion. And like i stated above, seems you have a hard time reading. I am not playing it, i played enough last night to form my opinion and that's it. And i don't need something free to play sorry i have plenty of games to keep my busy included the UC2 Multiplayer Demo. And last but not least i am not complaining i am voicing my opinion and that's it enough said. You should be more worried about complaining to me cause you think i am complaining. I do not like the game so sue me......

TechWiz5487d ago (Edited 5487d ago )

I had 99% completed only had 4mb left and it froze. I started the update @ 8:15 and kept checking on it. Finally arond 11:45 it was at 99%. I waited and waited and never got to 100%. I will try again today. Oh well the game is worth it.

decimalator5487d ago

Dang, while people don't agree with 2Spock, he's still entitled to his opinion. Granted, he opened himself up by posting on a thread that was destined for flaming.

I have been in the MAG beta from day one, and it has improved quite a bit already. This is what betas are for.

To clarify, you have 3 things to download - a ~300MB "MAG Beta" directly from the PS Store once you enter your code. Then there is a patch to bring that code up to the latest version. Then you have the game data, which is about 2.67GB that I'm assuming comes straight from the MAG download servers.

The 300MB app is essentially the skeleton app that allows you to download the beta. It's a good idea, since that way they don't have to re-qualify every iteration of the beta for the PS Store, they just have to make sure that the 300MB download app works and is able to download the rest of the data, which they can tweak as much as they want or need over time, which is what you need to be able to do with a true beta.

The *updates* aren't 3GB. The patch was about 30MB, I don't remember exactly how big. Most of the 3GB is data that isn't going to change very much. And once the game is completed, this is the data that will be on the Blu-ray. Portions of it may get installed to the HDD, but you won't have to be downloading gigabytes of data to play the game.

I think that people are starting to get used to the "betas" that are now in vogue this generation, which are essentially just early access previews of a (mostly) finished game. There might be a few minor problems, but the goal isn't really to solicit feedback, it is to increase buzz for the game and reward the hardcore players so they feel warm and fuzzy and plop down the $60(+) come release day.

The MAG Beta is a REAL beta, it has rough edges that will be polished over the course of the beta and the remaining several months til release. It is also to stress test the servers so that we DO bring them to their knees. That is valuable information, and will allow them time to tweak to help prevent it from happening once the game is released.

It also helps to give feedback through the MAG Beta forum. If you're a beta tester, you have access to it. Try to keep it constructive, but tell them how you feel. If enough people feel that way, it will get addressed.

THIS is why 2Spock needs to change his attitude about the MAG Beta. If you're going to download it, play it once and then never come back then wtf is the point of being a beta tester?

Not surprised at the high demand for MAG.

Peter North5488d ago

RRODlings, have you ever engaged in a Multiplayer match with 256 players?

ThatCanadianGuy5488d ago

I believe they are still trying to join an incredible 5vs5 match in gears 2.

mistajeff5488d ago

Well it's a good thing they're doing a beta then

shadowfox5488d ago

Yup! I'm sure a lot of people that were waiting to get in are pissed, but this is exactly what the beta is for. Now if it's still like this come January, then we have an issue...

JL5488d ago

"Now if it's still like this come January, then we have an issue..."

So very true. This game will absolutely die if they don't get this ironed out. With the possibility that this game could potentially be huge and revolutionary in a sense, they really REALLY need to get that worked out. Granted they still have plenty of time, but they really need to step their game up on this if they couldn't even handle the influx of beta testers that they had prepared for.

PinkUni5488d ago

f**ing ign and other sites f**ked with the scores because the beta was laggy

the final game was not laggy at all and yet they scored it like it like all they played was the beta

JL5488d ago (Edited 5488d ago )

@Pink
Actually the reason the game scored low was because when it came out (officially came out, not the beta I'm talking about), it was absolutely horrible with being buggy. Well, I exaggerate a bit, but it was indeed bad. I absolutely love the game now and it's one of my favorite online games, if not my favorite. However, when it came out it was indeed bad and probably did deserve those scores. What should've probably happened is probably more sites giving revised reviews once it was fixed. Especially considering the majority of the problems was the servers and not the game itself.

And to clarify my above comment. I am absolutely pulling for this game and if it proves to come through it will (I'm sure) become my favorite online shooter period. I really can't wait. I hate shooters for the most part because of the whole run-n-gun era. This seems to be trying to do away with that and really changing the way online shooters are played. I'm very hyped for it. But only a fool would suggest that this game would be absolutely crushed if it came out with server problems. Especially a game like this that needs a big community.

MAG was one of the most ambitious shooters ever and deserves a PS5 sequel

Zipper Interactive were once one of Sony's most important studios and became a household name due to their work on the SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs series during the PlayStation 2's heyday. Their most ambitious title was MAG. Could it make a comeback?

Best game ever. I had put over 1700hrs into that game before it deteriorated too far with cheaters getting out of the map and sadly decided it was time to let it die (Zipper had already been closed down by that time).

Amazing game. Hopefully sony makes a sequel

It didn't have a BR mode.

Da12RespectA1703d ago

That wasn't a battle royale game at all.

rdgneoz31703d ago

3 teams of 32 fighting it out would be considered Battle Royaleish. If you're gonna saying teams are OK when you start doing teams of 2 or 3 or 4, then 32v32v32 should work. And on besides that, it had 128 v 128 which was insanely fun.

Muzikguy1704d ago (Edited 1704d ago )

I personally hadn't played much of it. I did spend a lot of time in PlanetSide 2 though (somewhat like MAG). Games like these tend to get overrun by cheaters and then ruined too often.

Teflon021704d ago

MAG didn't have that issue as far as I remember. I use to love the 256 matches. That game had an amazing community. Everyone actually communicated and played together. No one B****ed at the team. Everyone understood there was so much going on that if things are going wrong. Everyone had to think of new strategies.
Fav moment was when all 3 other squads 32 took their objectives but we were struggling with ours and had one more to blow up. The other leaders were communicating asking if the 2 nearest squads should send ppl. Our leader was like Naw I got a idea. So he told us all to die and set ourselves at the nearest hills prone without being seen. So we all did and surrounded the areas.
He said everyone on his count throw your grenades. Then snipers go all out and everyone else run in. They won't be able to get everyone and if needed the snipers go in about 10 seconds after.

Everyone did that and I got to the objective and set it off. 9 of us survived and got it. felt amazing to say I got the objective, cover me in that moment. Wish it was PS4 so I could have saved that moment
It was literally the coolest moment I had in a online shooter, closest since was BF4.

Muzikguy1704d ago

@Teflon

That does indeed sound like an awesome moment. One that makes games like these memorable for sure. It does seem like MAG had a lot more cooperation than most any online shooter

Teflon021704d ago

It did because you absolutely can't get no where in it without teamwork. It also didn't have an extremely big base of players. Everyone who played really wanted to play. I really hope they bring it back and do the same thing to only have serious players get into the big matches again

UltraNova1704d ago

Wow, what a run! This game looks better than PUBG!

Muzikguy1704d ago

Watching that video you wouldn't think the game was on PS3.

Spenok1704d ago

I adored this game too. Some of my best FPS online memories on it. So freaking good.

I'd love to see another game like this come out at some point. And NOT like Planetside... M.A.G. was something special.

yellowgerbil1704d ago

Yeah problem is if it existed now adays, it would likely be riddled with xp boosts and dance moves and all that other pay garbage...
MAG and Warhawk are the only 2 online games I ever got into, and both need a PROPER sequel on PS5.
Remember the first time I got 100 kills in a match, was in a turret with a repair kit and just mowed down wave after wave on Valors map.

UnholyLight1704d ago

Really interesting as an Xbox owner at the time. This game had captured my interest as a kid but I never got a chance to play it. Being on PS4 and soon possibly PS5, I would love to see this franchise brought back to life. I imagine with the power of next gen it would be really quite fun.

From what I hear and what I remember, this game was FAR ahead of it's time. A real shame it never truly took off from my understanding.

grifter0241704d ago

I'm an xbox boy since mech warrior but got a ps3 slim for mag. If you liked halo or cod you'd have had a blast in mag. Was one of the first games you could actually do something other than shooting and still make a difference in game.

spicelicka1703d ago

PS4 needs something like it. In the multiplayer space it's far behind the Xbox, there are no quality multiplayer games on it that aren't on other consoles.

Man do I miss mag and zipper.

TheSinsibleOne1829d ago

Seriously though. Nowadays this and next gen are practically begging for a new MAG.

zodiac9091829d ago

How did we go from having games like resistance 1, 2, warhawk with 30 vs 30 player battles, and M.A.G. with 128 vs 128 players, ON LAST GEN to now having 20 vs 20...such a step back.

JEECE1829d ago

Because Sony hadn't figured out how to market their exclusives yet. Plus at that time COD craze was at its peak. So "generic high school bro #7," who was the primary purchaser of FPSs at that time (or at least represented a crowd necessary to sustain a playerbase), if he even had a PS3, would have just seen a game like MAG as a "copycat of Black Ops, man."

Not to mention MAG was pretty terribly uninviting for new people after awhile, because it was more skill-based. This was great for veterans, but if you weren't willing to put in the time getting destroyed for awhile, you would never appreciate the game. The Battlefield: Bad Company and BF:3 games out during that gen were far more accessible to lower level players.

Vegamyster1829d ago

Battlefield 4 was at the start of the generation and had 64 players, to me it depends more on how the map/gameplay is utilized, i enjoyed the 20vs20 modes more in the MW Beta than the 64 player ground war mode.

_SilverHawk_1948d ago

I remember this game and it was amazing. I would like it if Sony would make another one because this game was ahead of it's time.

RememberThe3571947d ago

It was an amazing concept and it was a cool game, it was just ahead of it's time. I played the sh!t outta MAG, but the game itself played just okay. I'd love to have seen a sequel, even just a spiritual successor, especially with the next gen coming and the way cloud computing has advanced a game like that nowadays would be awesome.

Elwenil1947d ago

It may have been amazing if you played for SVER, but if you played for Raven or Valor, it was an unbalanced mess. I had some fun with it, but the player count was an illusion at best and false advertising at it's worst. The map and faction balance was so ridiculously skewed you knew who was going to win as soon as you saw what team you were against. It definitely had some interesting ideas, but was far from an amazing experience in my opinion. I would have much rather Zipper have made another SOCOM game rather than MAG.

darthv721947d ago

that game would make for a great battle royale release. So many players all at once... it was ahead of its time for a console shooter.

TheGamez1001948d ago

Was such an underrated game. One of my most favorite fps of last gen. So unfortunate zipper was closed down. Imagine if it was a success and thered be a 2nd game by now.....

TekoIie1948d ago (Edited 1948d ago )

I can think of many better games that I've yet to play...

"Almost 10 years ago the greatest first person shooter came out"

HAH. So is Planetside 2 now the best FPS ever? Because it does everything MAG can and does it far better. I'm afraid that MAG is basically your standard FPS but uses scale as it's selling point. The vast majority of shooters that focus on smaller scale matches have gameplay leaps and bounds better than MAG so it is definitely not the greatest FPS.

I know many people are going to try and refute this by telling me to look at the three factions but MAG has literally no character. The game is call 'Massive. Action. Game' for gods sake which is a contender for 'The Worst Title a Game Could Have' award. I've never been a fan of Zipper but I hear great things about them from their PS2 days. However, with MP gaining popularity in the generation that followed I think it says a lot that they couldn't keep up with the competition.

Knushwood Butt1948d ago

'HAH. So is Planetside 2 now the best FPS ever? Because it does everything MAG can and does it far better.'.

It was released years later.

Was there anything offering what MAG did when MAG was released?

TekoIie1948d ago

"Was there anything offering what MAG did when MAG was released?"

Yes, Planetside 1.

Knushwood Butt1948d ago

Fair enough.

Can't say I've played it, but I enjoyed MAG for a while.

FantasticBoss1947d ago

MAG was one of the very few games trying to do scale like it did, but I think it missed the mark. Wish it could have had a sequel though as they may have been able to iterate on it to create something pretty neat.

Sony had a awesome approach to online in the PS2 days with SOCOM co op that had games working together to achieve a tactical goal they pioneered voice chat on the PS2 for SOCOM but as they steamrolled ahead it was clear team Deathmatch would take over in popularity which shifted zippers approach so all their experience amounted for not much when designing online in the PS3 era.
It still was a decent game but couldn't stand out compared to cod which had millions of players consistently

yellowgerbil1948d ago

Loved mag had over 1700hrs into it across many accounts, remember my first 100 kill sabotage game, was insane

BLow1947d ago

Yes, so do I and not that game they released on PS3. I'm talking the one Zipper did and not Slant Six. At least Slant Six tried to do the series justice once they fixed the issues.

The one Zipper did didn't feel like Socom to me. It felt more like Ghost Recon to be honest. I absolutely loved the voice commands and I figured they would be even better on next gen hardware. They didn't even bother doing anything.

Maybe, I just wanted it more grounded and not so techy if that makes sense. I just wanted to go into jungles or missions just using my wits and patience and not have to use a bunch of gadgets. I wanted to be able to give orders with my voice to squad members. Yeah, they can at least have earpieces lol.

It's hard to explain but I know the old school Socom players know what I'm saying. Socom just had a certain feeling and the new game didn't feel that way. Slant Six yes. Zipper no...

We can only hope but if they bring it back they have to do it right. If not don't bother and just make something new. I rather have the memories I had with Socom be mostly positive than negative. Unless you pull a God of War, don't bother lol.

I've already said too much but that goes to show how much I loved Socom. Especially 1 and 2.....

Deathdeliverer1947d ago (Edited 1947d ago )

Game was simply ahead of its time. If mag came out now with improved graphics people would be blown away. Back then people whined about the graphics even though it had players literally everywhere. It was several great games in one. Battlefield, Ghost Recon, and Call of duty.

Hungryalpaca1947d ago

What exactly was it ahead of its time in? Player count? Planetside released in 2003 and and played count per match was over 300.

xkvcq1946d ago (Edited 1946d ago )

The BETA for MAG was one of my fondest gaming moments. I was highly anticipating the start of the beta servers but I had school that day. I had started downloading it that morning as soon as it was available and just when it finished downloading I found out school was cancelled, last minute, because of weather. BEST. SNOW DAY. EVER. I played the beta all day, continuing to put off my homework :P

Well have I got news for you pal! Planetside 2 has been available for nearly 4 years on the PS4 and longer on PC and people still aren't blown away. Maybe the novelty of scale is actually overrated and people don't care as much about it which is why MAG failed when multiplayer shooters were at peak popularity during it's lifetime?

If you were blown away by 256 players in 2010 why would you not have been blown away by 1000 roughly 2-3 years later?
