Sony committed to PS3 "for 10 years and beyond" despite poor sales

SCEA president Jack Tretton has confirmed that the company has long term plans for PlayStation 3, playing down concerns over initial sales figures from the LA Times. The PS3 has sold 1.2 million units compared to the Wii's 2.1 million which launched around the same time.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Jack believes a million units one way or another isn't anything to worry about as they're in this for the next 10 years and beyond. An IDC analyst agrees with him saying that the PS3 "is ahead of the market, while the Xbox 360 and the Wii were designed for immediate market impact."

However, Kyoshi Shin of Japan's International Game Developers' Association, says that people compare the PS3 to "going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat."

indeed i remember an analyst saying the same thing, that by 2010 PS3 will have overtaken Xbox 360 in sales...I'm not sure I agree with this though, its games that sell systems and PS3 badly needs some super exclusives to beat the 360.

Vojkan6191d ago

Sony is living on PS2 and PSP sales(software and hardware). It will take at least 2 years for PS3 to cathc up on 360. Looking at 360 line up from now until the end of year i have to say it's really impressive and for Sony to counter it....it will be hard. Even MGS4 got delayed so what can beat Halo 3?

especially with the biggest of all ....Little Big Planet.

User-created content is the future of gaming.

This simple platform game is going to win the hearts and minds of millions of gamers but most importantly, the huge number of ps2 owners who will eventually migrate to the ps3 - especially when the price drops.

There is a Halo 3 Killer...and it's not a shooter.

Bring on 2008. It's going to be a great year.

Note: the majority of exclusives for the xbox 360 are shooters. But not everybody wants to kill and destroy things.

TheExecutive6190d ago

The 360 doesnt have support worldwide... people seem to forget this. Do you actually think the 360 will stay on top of sales with support in the U.S only? I sure dont.

PS3 will always play catch-up to the other consoles. If PS3 gets a price drop, so will XBOX and Wii. If PS3 gets killer exclusives, so will XBOX and Wii.

Vojkan6191d ago

I agree, it's logical thing to happened. Also i see Wii to be winner of this gen. Wii is getting more and more support from developers and as it continues to sell and when it drops price even more, it will be almost impossible to cathc it.
But i see this "race" more as race between 360 and PS3. Wii with it's previous gen specifications is in totaly another league so it's unrealistic to compare them.
Anyway this got to long. I just wanted to say that i don't think PS3 will win.

Ah, same guy who said KZ2 trailer was from realtime gameplay. We believe in you Jack.

The article has interesting bit at the bottom though "However, Kyoshi Shin of Japan's International Game Developers' Association, says that people compare the PS3 to "going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat."

miasma6191d ago

as much as i like my xbox 360 i feel one of the main reasons i bought it was so i could play games now (the immediate impact). it is a decent console but has not blown me away by any means, i am still playing my ps2 more than the xbox. If PS3 ever gets it together and has some decent games (doesn't have to be just exclusives) i will grab one.
As for playing catch up, i do agree that this time around PS3 does have alot of work to do. Xbox is more the competition, obviously, than wii is though. Nintendo is doing very well, but i still think that is going to be a fast burn though for just a couple of years at most.

miasma6191d ago

Just to add a thought to what a couple of people are saying about "the long term win" or "the winner" of the console war. Why do you people see this as a race? where does it end? It is good that there are competitive consoles. people will continue to buy what they like. Maybe by 2010, both console will be closely matched in terms of installed base. This is technology people, it will always continue to advance, and get faster, better, whatever. I find it a pity that so many people can be so narrow minded, and NEED a WINNER to make themselves feel good.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing693h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos35m ago(Edited 32m ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto9h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger888h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
