Game Anthropologists Watch the Natives

The business of testing consumer-responses to gaming has never been more complex, ranging from one-on-one usability tests to anthropological approaches in which researchers observe gamers clandestinely.

In the OGDC session 'User Research for Online Game Development' two very different approaches were studied, though both were described as complementary in achieving a better picture of how people interact with games, and how they interact with one another in the context of games.

Lisa Galarneau from The University of Waikato, New Zealand is a socio-cultural anthropologist with experience in online design and development. Her research looks at social patterns in virtual worlds.
