PlayStation 3 Sales Rocket 1000% on Slim Release

Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed 999 per cent over the past week.

Sony introduced the new, slimmer SKU last Tuesday, and although Chart-Track does not reveal actual sales numbers, Dorian Bloch, director of the firm called the growth "a huge increase".

While I agree with the Wii being for the casuals, you have to remember that the PS and the PS2 were both considered the casual gamers consoles the last two generations. The PS3 picking up where those two left off, while certainly being a feat, would not be entirely impossible. All the Wii has for it is Nintendo's games. Sony has their's and 3rd party titles.

I'll be the last person to tell you I care about sales in any way. I just care about the quality and me getting to have it.

That being said though even I am curious about Japan in 2009. I want to see what Final Fantasy 13 + PS3 Slim = Out to. I really feel that'll be a record setter later this year.

I also feel this holiday season most people will be getting PS3's and not 360s. Most either have a Wii/360/both and now it's time for the PS3 to come swoop in. The good guys win in the end, and Sony has been good to me since PS1. I hope to see them doing well in the future and I hope next console gen they do the same.(I also hope Nintendo gets their big bank account to give me a HD console on par with or above a PS3 in the next 2 years already. The Wii is a dust collector)

But let's say in theory Europe has been selling PS3s around the same rate as the U.S. It's usually more, but for the sake of my uber fanboy math we'll theorize anyway.

Hrmm... Nahhhh No way it sold 1.3mil this fast. My fanboy math is hilariously wrong.

So let's just divide by 4 and as a rough guess.

1.3mil / 4 = 325,000

Now that makes more sense actually. Considering Japan which usually sells only 7,500-10,000 PS3s sold 150,000 in one week.

Good news but lets not be to quick with the assumptions here. It says in the article its outselling the 360 by a 3 to 1 ratio. So dont expect it to be something like a 10 to 1 ratio just because it increased by 1000%. Because PS3 was probably out of stock alot of places before the slim got introduced.

Still a 3 to 1 ratio over the 360 is very impressive.

The Wii appeals to people who never played videogames in their life, though. Senior citizens who probably never so much as played a game of Pong in the 70s or Tetris in the 80s, they are enjoying the Wii. My 60-year old parents have a Wii, and all throughout my life I couldn't get them to play a videogame no matter how much I tried to convince them they might like it. Their friends have Wiis. These people couldn't have cared less about the PS2. They like the Wii basically for Wii Sports Bowling and Wii Fit, and that's it, that's all they care about it. There are way more of them out there than you think. These people will never care about videogames, but the Wii has something for them that they like. I don't think its fair to say the Wii has the casual-gamer market in a lock (it's winning it NOW, but not necessarily for the rest of this generation). Instead, I'd say it has the NON-gamer market in a lock. It's appealing outside of the gamer community entirely. The PS3 and the 360 are starting to offer a lot to appeal to the casual-gamer, but only the Wii will continue to appeal to non-gamers, and there are LOT of non-gamers, so I don't see the Wii getting snuffed out anytime soon.

But I will not believe that there were still thousands of people buying PS3s the week before an announced $100 price drop. For those who didn't see the value and/or potential of the Ps3 in the beginning simply can't ignore the facts any longer, and the price drop + new slim design is all it needed to trigger a large spike in sales. The landscape has changed, now it's Microsofts move, although other than taking things away from the ps3 with money it does seem like they have any other plays, they set themselves up for this by thinking short term.

Funny how the biggest fanboy on the website blames this massive sales spike on console replacements, when he backs the most defective product in the history of electronics. Good job Mart!

" You claim the spike was due to defective unit replacements, and then you go on to say sales will return to normal. In other words, Sony wouldn't be dumb enough to have the same issue plaguing their consoles for years on end like the 360 does. Good job owning yourself again Mart.

The 360 is a failure the majority of the time, that is a fact (54.2%). If there were ever any issues with the PS3, they were related to mostly a specific model type, and are more than likely fixed in the Slim. The 360 on the other hand has never released a single model that wasn't plagued heavily by RROD or all the other various defects.

And another thing, stop being such a stalker. Leave ultimolu alone, it's creepy. Go outside and make some friends, you are too old to be creeping people on the internet in your mums basement at your age. Seriously, grow a pair.

The Wii was and is $249.99 the PS3 WAS $599.99 now it is $299.99 with actually more features and better hardware. Nobody really cares for PS2 compatibility after player a PS3 game...and we all know sony could do PS2 compatibility in emulation...they are just testing and getting it right...its not ready yet.

Come of guys and girls...God of War 3, FF13, FF13 versus, Uncharted 2, MAG, GT5.....all of these games are gonna sell millions and intern sell millions of PS3 slim consoles....

Microsoft will be coming out with a new console when Natal hits...which will be Xmas 2011...all for $299.99!

The wii HD will come out in Xmas 2011 also with 1080p support bluray and upgraded motion controls, for $249 price.

I'm most pleased for Naughty Dog and Insomniac. I've always felt it was an injustice they they never got the sales they deserved for their games, particularly Reistance 2 (one of the best FPS I've ever played) They deserve to be rewarded so hopefully Uncharted 2 will be considered a flagship franchise by the PlayStation users.

Wasn't the PS3 the fastest selling machine when it debuted in Europe or something like that? Hopefully it continues to sell cos the machine itself deserves it.

But I still give Sony the middle finger for the crappy firmware updates. Yes, I hate them. Hopefully we'll get some kind of unified service this year.

I am firmly in the haters camp in that regard my friend. It forced me to get an Xbox 360 (which I should have bought earlier because I'm loving it), but honestly the only significant firmware update in 2-3 years has been the ability to go into the XMB/read and send messages without quitting the entire game.

I have images somewhere on my PC of the E3 where Phil Harrison showed slides of the XMB interface and how it had amazing stuff like video chat whilst racing F1, a sweet GUI. HOME etc. I actually ordered my PS3 that day and I'm still waiting for that awestome stuff.

Maybe some people are happy with Photo slideshow applications or iPlayer, or even some new codecs, but I have a thing called a PC so understandably I wasn't as pleased.

Well, I guess since I don't play a lot of games online, a lot of those features don't really matter much to me. But I can see how everyone else would be rather miffed because of "empty promises".

I will agree with you on the fact that there are some questionable additions to the console that I couldn't care less about; take the most recent update, firmware 3.0 for example. Seriously, a sparkly XMB? What on earth does that have to with gaming?

Thankfully, at least the software library is up to par these days, so there are games that people of every preference can enjoy! Remember how sparse it was back in '07?

Yeah a lot of my friends were surprised at why I decided to buy a different console just for that reason but user functionality and Online is really important for me. I'm a social gamer, I'll buy a good game if most of my friends are playing it online so we can have fun together.

PSN is a solid network service with no real issues but I just didn't enjoy playing online with it as I do with my other console, mainly because of that sense of connection with my friends. A lot of people give hate to Microsoft about the fact that Xbox Live isn't free but if millions of people are paying for it and enjoying it, what does that say about the importance of Online? Sony admitted recently they made mistakes in regards to that but all that matters is now is they try to fix whatever they can and release more features RELEVANT to gamning.

You're right. I really hope both Uncharted 2 and Ratchet and Clank both get the sales they deserve. Both insomniac and naughty dog both made some of the best series on the PS1,PS2 and PS3 and the sales should reflect that. I don't really play the sales game like most here on n4g do (though it is kinda interesting) but these people work hard and deserve to be rewarded for their hard work.

MGS4, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, KZ2 all sold at Platinum 29,95 within 4 to 8 months after its release. Soon they'll start to give the games for free because they don't sell enough.

And this Christmas, the PS3 sales will again be in 3rd position.

The slim was announced 2 weeks ago, my wreckoning is people held off for the slim, which meant low sales the week prior, then when the slim hit, everybody jumped in and the numbers went up

Regardless of how many actual units were sold, its good news for sony UK. I actually saw an advert for PS3 the other day, infact i saw it a couple of times

Opinion... For sony to be no1 again has to win it's old exlusives back -and new ones of course- otherwise nothing much will change. I don't think PS3 Slim alone can do it. Sony still has millions of units to cover.

I think Sony has proven and will continue to do so, that they can make brand new exclusive IPs that will sell well. Uncharted 2 being a prime example. It's already considered in the same regards as God of War and it's only on it's 2nd iteration.

And I don't even want to begin to talk about GT5. As much as the haters will hate, and the Forzealots will try to downplay it, it's going to move massive amount of consoles for awhile.

Looks good for Sony they have to keep this up though the ps2 sold heavy into its later years and this will have to happen here as well. I cant see it being a problem though if the quality of games that are present between this year and next are kept up to. At first I didn't anything of it because I thought that would be low, but I started to think if that is just one week imagine NPD for the whole month of September. It's not even the holiday season yet and there haven't been a major PS3 game release yet so just think of the possibilities. In 2007 the 360 sold 500,000 in the US in a month when Halo 3 came out but just think about it they had to release their best game to get those numbers Sony is going to do more then half a million in the US this month with out a major game.

This just proves that Sony dropped the price due to high demand of their console and that MS dropped it because they knew Sony dropping the price of the PS3 will give a massive blow to the 360 so they desperately cut the price even though they said they won't be cutting the price for a very long time.

MS are a bunch of liars and hypocrites.

The PS3 was in high demand hence the big impact it made in sales after the price cut, but it looks like only a handful of people want the 360.

Well, Microsoft has currently had more price cuts and sku changes than any other console on top of being out a year longer.

This is like watching the San Diego Charger last year. Everyone counted them out and started saying LT is way past his prime and a loser, and then they managed to make it to the playoffs. Great job Sony!

We all knew that the PS3 was going slow and that a Price Drop would make sales explode. Yet we read and got criticize by many who stated PS3 is doom and A price drop now is too little too late. Well sorry boys, but the truth holds the passage of time. And just like the first post calls out Soxfan, there were many that bashed and bashed the PS3, saying the PS brand is weak, the YLOD is the same as RROD, Sony is in crisis, the PS brand has lost many exclusives etc etc.

Today is a day for saying I told you so, but be careful because the PS3 haters believe it to their bones that the PS3 is doom and this is just fireworks blah blah blah. All that i ask is to show humility and satisfaction for being right all along and that the PS brand is on its way of becoming synonymous with gaming once again.
PS3 and PSP is a powerful combination of never before seen entertainment. Just play GTA on the PSP and realize that you are playing a real PS2 game on the palm of your hand. And GT PSP will be a huge huge achievement for the PSP.
ALL in all, Im happy that Sony launched the PS 1 back in the 90's and changed the definition of gaming that Nintendo had build with kiddie games. Now we are on the verge of PS brand greatness, and like in the past they deliver like no one else does.

It's funny how much of the press has been trying to suggest that the PS3 slim did nothing for sales, and was actually beat by the 360. Then stuff like this comes out and they don't want to talk about it, you have to go to more obscure sites to find out the truth. I mean best buy had the thing up front of the store on display to everyone, they must have sold a ton themselves.

Once again, to all those whining about sony losing exclusives... what about bioshock, oblivion, braid, lost planet, kane and lynch, ninja gaiden and ninja gaiden 2, or fallout 3's dlc? what about mass effects developers refusing to say it is 360 exclusive? the fact is, xbox hardly had any exclusives to lose, so all of the lost exclusives so far have been 360 games. Sony on the other hand had 2 generations worth of games, so it's only logical that in today's age of rising development costs that some of those would go to other platforms. the internet didn't melt when mgs2 went to xbox, but if a port of mgs4 were announced, this site would melt. even gta4's dlc is rumored to hit ps3 on disc eventually. the only exclusives ps3 has lost to 360 that actually mattered are final fantasy 13 (and ps3 still has it exclusive in the place where it matters most, japan), devil may cry (which didn't make much of a difference in console sales, did it?), and tekken 6. ff13 might make some difference, though rpg's aren't as big outside of japan, and gta4's exclusive dlc (while it's still exclusive) has made some difference as well, but aside from that it's mostly negligible.

of the NEW ip's that sony has announced, as well as it's best selling older ip's (MGS, Gran turismo, etc), they still remain exclusive to PS3. 360 got a port of Rising, but Kojima himself has already said he isn't even working on it (I sat right in front of him as he said it), and instead the "new guys" on his team will be making it for him while he focuses his efforts on the "true" sequel, the PSP MGS Peace Walker.

Exclusives are the last thing PS3 needs to worry about.

Seeing 2 at the beginning of the price is SOOOO much more appealing than seeing a 4 or a 5, or even a 3...

Question- for anyone who cares to answer:

Are we seeing gamers lapping up these consoles? Or BluRay adopters? At first, I think it was a mix of both BR supporters/die hard PS loyalists.

Now that they have some titanic titles coming down the pipeline, are we finally seeing the software move consoles?

I'd like to see some sales on PS3 software. The answer might lie in that.

Or-- if Sony announces at the end of the month that they just added two million+ PSN accounts or something.
