Oz chain pronounces Xbox 360 Core dead and buried

Just like the entry-level PS3, sales of the basic version of the Xbox 360 aren't exactly flourishing and thanks to a lack of hard drive and wireless controller, it isn't hard to imagine why.

Now it seems that Australian chain, Dick's Smith Electronics, is withdrawing the Core system from its shelves and is not going to re-order, proclaiming that it is a end-of-life product. Whether this is limited to Australia only or is the a beginning of a tidal wave, remains to be seen.

on the premium, and maybe the elite.

WilliamRLBaker4484d ago

and they will stop production of the core, offer some incentive for the core owners, like a coupon for 50% off a 20 gig hard drive, and then price drop the pro, and elite.

JIN KAZAMA4484d ago

Why would someone buy the core. Its a last gen system, with no harddrive, no wireless controllers. Its just an xbox with a better graphics card.

warfed4484d ago

you could say the same about the premium too... since original xbox had a hdd

SmokeyMcBear4484d ago

yeah, it seemed inevitable, im just wondering if M$ will officially kill it off, allowing developers to make games making use of the internal hard drive, or will the core buyers in the year and a half that the console has been out, be factored into the development of games still. They should find a way to give cheap 20 gb drive to the core users, so the games that are made can be fully utilized.

fenderputty4484d ago

would do this. Otherwise all core users could be getting royally screwed if developers plan on all consoles having an HDD.

They shouldn't have bothered with the basic versions of their console, in my opinion, as the vast majority of people were interested in the better value, more feature packed, premium versions.

If they had just stuck to one version then there wouldn't have been such a surplus of the basic versions lying around afer release while at the same time consumers wanting the premium versions had to either wait, waste a bit of money buying upgrading, or worse, squander money buying one from eBay.

Hopefully both companies will have learnt from this and the PS4 and 720 will be in one version only and have ample supply ready for launch. Hint: they better start producing now ...

ALLGAMER4484d ago

But MS obviously havent learned from it. Think, ELITE.

Neutral Gamer4484d ago (Edited 4484d ago )

Haha, I see what you're saying ALLGAMER. Oh well, there's always the next generation ...

Maybe Microsoft should have just released the Elite as their one and only console for this generation? Although the price may have been too high for a lot of consumers. Still, when the PS3 Premium and Xbox 360 Elite fall in price next year (hopefully anyway) then it should encourage a lot more people to upgrade / buy a console for the first time.

Its about time that some retailers cut off the core package, its rubbish and stupid like the 20GB PS3 version was. Jin this is the first time I have ever agreeed with you. Come on MS drop the Core pack and just have the elite and premium.

Hopefully a price drop will come soon, this will help them sell a few more consoles and bring out some more games MS. :D
