They were rewarded with a first act that opened familiarly enough on a highway littered with abandoned vehicles but quickly transitioned into less traveled territory.
One of the first of these, a classic roadside Motor Inn, broke out of the get from point a to point b linear level design with a couple different ways of approaching the situation. While you could go directly from the road into the main parking lot, you could also leap from the freeway embankment onto a billboard and then jump from that to the roof of the motel. Valve conveniently left a hunting rifle on the billboard catwalk which made a perfect spot for sniping".
