PS3's new 3D Mode Captured on Video, Coming in 2010 to All Existing Games

You know what's absolutely useless? A video of Wipeout HD being played in 3D, with some schmuck wearing 3D glasses and babbling on about how much fun he's having. Well, that schmuck is this Engadget editor, the video can be found after the break, and we've gotta say: we loved it. Especially for something like Wipeout HD, whose neon-infused tracks make for an almost too convenient example of rapidly approaching vanishing points, we'd say 3D could really be a quasi-"killer app" for consoles going forward -- especially if those fancy new motion controllers don't catch on for Microsoft and Sony. In many ways, 3D just seems to make more sense in a video game than for a movie, and the whole problem of finding content to deliver in the format has already been solved: a software update for the PS3 sometime in 2010 will enable it to provide a 3D viewing experience to "all" existing games on the system. We're sure there will be some exceptions, but it sounds very promising. The console itself pumps out a quite regular signal over HDMI, which the TV syncs up with your 3D glasses. A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye. Of course, you'll need a brand new TV, but at least it won't be restricted to just Sony televisions. Start saving those pennies!

Sounds interesting. I just bought a 120hz television last week. I guess it won't work with this technology. But theoretically, should 120hz be enough for 3D? Why would it need to be 200hz? 120hz could send 60hz to each eye, and a lot of TV's out there are only 60hz, so that seems like it would be enough, I would think. But the current TV's don't have the chipset or the output to send the 3D signal, so the point is moot anyway. I guess I'll have to wait 5 years or more until I'm in the market for a new TV before I get to have a 3D set.

deadreckoning6665773d ago

Nope. Im happy with regular ol' 1080p for now. I'll upgrade in 5 years

BiggCMan5773d ago (Edited 5773d ago )

as soon as i read "all existing games" i was happy, as soon as i heard "new t.v" i said F_CK!!!... this is truly awesome at its best though, cant wait, maybe ill have enough to get a 1080p, 3D, 40" t.v some day...

sniper-squeak5773d ago (Edited 5773d ago )

This is the future for PlayStation 3... as the guy said "you've got so much information coming at you..." - it's going to feel like your IN the game... just imagine in-car view and GT5...

<3 Sony

Ju5773d ago

I tried that out on a PC a while ago. I must say its a completely different experience in 3D. Imagine bullets flying your way. I had a new flat panel on my purchase list at some point. Guess I'll wait a bit for those 3D displays to come, then.

hesido5773d ago

.. the TV set should be fast enough to display *compeletely* different images in alternating order without afterglow effecting two versions of the frame. Hence you need a very, very fast set. Don't know the details of the technology but you *might* also need a blank frame between frames to reduce the afterglow. If that's the case, 120hz is out of the question even theoretically.

p3rf3ctgam3r5773d ago

From what I've read (sorry I don't have time to research links) . . . the 3D technology alternates two images, so theoretically, a 120hz television should be capable of alternating images with a framerate of 60FPS (total of 120fps in 3D).

heroicjanitor5773d ago

Things are moving very quickly and it's difficult to determine whether buying a new tv will be worth it, if I had bought one I would need to buy a 3d tv now... I still don't think I'll wait for 3d I'll probably get a hd tv soon.

simplyRealistic185773d ago

its not 120hz it's 240hz, 120hz for each eye,not 60hz for each eye, the guys said it in the video

phosphor1125773d ago

60hz would mean 30hz for each eye, which is roughly around 30 fps. I think higher hz rates would mean better fluidity though, meaning less motion sickness.

FamilyGuy5773d ago (Edited 5773d ago )

So what's the use of all these 120hrz LCD tvs that claim "3D ready" under their features? And all the newer 1080p DLP tvs claim "3D ready" too

I'm sure we'll all test it out on whatever tvs we have when it does launch in a fw update. I just hope sony doesnt limit your ability to attempt 3D playback on non-240hrz/3D ready tvs.

evrfighter5773d ago

and they say that pc gaming is expensive...

LOL

DaTruth5772d ago

Just buy a plasma and than there are no worries about hz!

Raz5772d ago

How is it possible that we're entering 2010 and we still need a ridiculous looking pair of 3-d glasses to view 3d images?

Bah. Humbug.

PS360PCROCKS5772d ago

"Someone plz explain: How is it possible that we're entering 2010 and we still need a ridiculous looking pair of 3-d glasses to view 3d images?"

You're joking right? You need the glasses to bring the images together in one picture. The colored lenses are for your eyes...I can't believe I'm even answering that question, I'm pretty sure you'll ALWAYS need something over your eyes

vhero5772d ago

This is gonna sell to a very Niche market but Sonys new slogan is correct it really does everything.

Bibto5772d ago

@Raz
If you don't want to wear the glasses, I suppose you could always just practice to blink really fast.

ReservoirDog3165772d ago

After reading a good number of these comments, I guess I am the only one who is annoyed by this new 3D push. Sly Cooper 3 probably just left a bad taste in my mouth with it's headache inducing 3D sections but regardless, I can't see the point.

I just hate these gimmicks video games have taken. Motion controls, 3D; they just seem a forced. To me at least. But what do I know?

Sony always push it self to make the future available now
while Microsoft still living in the 80's with their dead HD-DVD and DVD9 format

54percent5773d ago

That's not true! want a burned toast?

Alcon Caper5773d ago

Hm, people are still in the midst of buying normal HD televisions. Now we have to by 3D HD televisions.

No. I'm sorry, but I can't afford that.

Kill Crow5773d ago

PLAYINB3YOND5773d ago

if it works now and they already have the software update available why not just add it and have it optional depending on whether people have 3d compatable tv, becuase some people have just or still havent bought an HD set let alone a 3D one.

randomwiz5773d ago (Edited 5773d ago )

The only 3D capable tv's out there right now are a select few Samsung or Mitsubishi DLP tvs. And they use a different type of 3d.

So its kind of useless to have that option.

HBK6195771d ago

Mainly because it would require a TON of testing and modifications to get it working just perfectly for ALL games as said.

If this came out and something didn't work, imagine the backlash!

crillyconlig5773d ago

3d resistance would be increadable, all those enimies at once, epic

Grin5773d ago

That's cool. Without the glasses gives me a headache.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
