Is Halo 3: ODST Really Worth $60?

Originally titled Halo 3: Recon, Bungie and Microsoft have never denied that the game is essentially an expansion pack for Halo 3. However, when it was initially unveiled it was never meant to be a full-budget title, something that was changed later on. The question is, does the newly named Halo 3: ODST really warrant consumers shelling out $60?

In my opinion, ODST will be worth it. I love the campaign in all three Halo games, and ODST's single player looks like a fresh take on something that was already great.

Halo ODST comes with a new, fresh campaign with more story. The campaign is around 4-5 hours long, which is only a couple hours short of Halo 3's. It looks great for those who love the Halo campaigns like myself.
it comes with a Firefight mode that looks better than horde modes in other games because ODST actually uses levels designed and crafted for Firefight mode. In Gears 2, the Horde mode is only played on Versus multiplayer maps, which makes many maps a poor choice for Horde. Like i said, maps specifically made for Firefight will be much more fun and will have much more potential.

Then, ODST comes with the second part of the Mythic map pack which is three maps. The map pack will be free, and Bungie stated that as of now, these three maps will NOT be obtainable on the Xbox Live marketplace anytime soon. So to play the three new FREE maps, you need ODST.

In addition to the three new maps, ODST comes with all previously released map packs, which is a welcome addition and a great value to those who have not jumped into Halo's multiplayer yet or have not bought the maps yet.

Bottom line, its great to be a Halo fan, and if your not a Halo fan, why do you give a sh*t?

honestly, i think most full retailed games campaigns can be finished within 3-6 hours depending on how much value you want to get out of it

coming from bungie, you can expect to find a lot of hidden easter eggs, which is why i like their level design...plus given that it is an open world map and that (supposedly) the enemies respawn nearby if you stay in a certain area for a long time, i can see much replay value in its campaign once you complete it a single time...also the campaign is supposed to be 4 play coop enabled, i dont know about you guys, but i would love to play tag with friends in there just for fun with enemies interrupting

Yes, it is worth it. Especially if you're a Halo fan.

-New open world campaign that can be played with up to 4 players.
-New firefight mode which is much like Horde mode from Gears of War 2.
-Two new weapons including the M7S Sub-machine Gun and the M6C/SOCOM.
-All new accessories to use to take out your foes in stealth combat.
-All 24 maps including 3 exclusive maps (Citadel, Heretic, Longshore), along with Forge and Theater modes.
-Exclusive playable character Sgt. Johnson
-Exclusive beta to the upcoming Halo: Reach (This has been in development since Halo 3's launch, and will run on a completely new engine).

This game is launching with more content than Halo 3 did. Not to mention just as long of a story. There are a lot better scenarios of asking "is this game worth the full retail price?" such as Madden, games with only a single player campaign that are short, etc. Just because a game is running on the foundations of another game, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's some sort of expansion. I'm surprised no one said this about Gears of War 2. Is it because it was better masked to be a totally new game?

I know MGS4 is a bargin bucket game now. But when it was released was is worth full price for:

3-4 hours actual gameplay : $15-20
Blu-ray movie: $25

Therefore, it should have been priced $40-45 max

I love Halo, but was never a fan of Halo's multiplayer. I suppose if I was a Halo fan, loved the multiplayer and didn't already have these maps then the expansion might be for me but I agree with others. If Batman: AA, Uncharted, and other less featured games are worth the full price, then why not ODST? Any game that offers a full campaign, a never ending survival mode, and 3 (possibly 12) new MP maps (10-30 bucks right there), is worth the full price. And if it wasn't Halo, most of you would agree.

Just because it started as an expansion doesn't mean it still is. That seems to be too complicated for most of you to wrap your heads around. (Expansions don't offer that level of content.)

If you did take the time then kudos on your speed. My gut feeling, however, is that you raced through the game as quickly as you possibly could. If that's the case then why bother playing it at all, if your only goal is to finish it as quickly as possible?

I agree.. if you compare it to other retail games, ODST may not be 'worth it' because it doesn't have as many (new) features. But if you look at other 'full' games like batman:AA, it's definitely worth it.

It all depends on how much you enjoy Halo, really.. and judging by it's preorder numbers, lots of people think it's worth it. Same goes for MW2.

Personally, I'm not paying $60 dollars for it, just like I'm not paying $70 for MW2. Does this mean those games aren't worth their price? No, unless maybe the majority agreed with me (which they don't).

its kind of tuff to judge this ... odst ships with all the original halo 3 map packs on a separate disc.. and each map pack was worth 800 micro points (10$) packs include herioc, mythic and legendary.. and obviously odst comes with a new sp campaign.. with new mp odst maps for fire fight and other matches ... but since this is all acompanied with all the original downloadable map packs from halo 3 on a second disc thats probably the reason for the price hike

basically if you didnt get the complete halo 3 experience with all the map packs by dowloadin from live then this is a good deal

Its worth it for me considering the fact i did not get any of the Halo 3 maps.So for my £27 (which is pretty cheap for a new game in the UK), i will be getting a brand new campaign,firefight,all halo 3 maps + 3 extra and access to Halo Reach beta.

So IMO that is even more content than alot of other games like Bioshock that i bought, finished in 8 hours and returned it to my local game store 2 days later without an ounce of regret.

There are two discs: Halo 3: ODST (new single player experience/Firefight mode) and Halo 3: Mythic (Halo 3 multiplayer mode, includes ALL of the maps from Halo 3 + DLC and 3 new maps)

I think that's worth the price.

Plus, you'll have access to the Halo: Reach beta in 2010.

I agree, it's worth the price. But in my opinion they should be offering a cheaper version that just has the new maps and not the entire "complete Halo 3 multiplayer experience." Because most people already bought most of that other content when they bought Halo 3, and some people already bought ALL of that other content when they bought the expansions. So if we could get ODST and the new maps without having to pay full price for some content we've already bought, that would be cool. But then again, it is nice to be able to delete all of the downloaded maps from the hard drive since they'll all be on disc now. I dunno.

odst is essentially the same thing. the firefight mode is something that every halo fan has always secretly wanted. if you play halo then you know how popular infection is. firefight is along the same lines. plus you have Reach, remember this is en entire new engine designed for halo. this is the future of halo. for those who criticize the weapons or say its halo 3.5 then technically you are right. this is a magnificent story that takes place prior to halo 3 that offers new insight into the universe. on top of all that it gives you 40 dollars worth of dlc...3 old maps PLUS a brand new one. also the reason its includes ALL the halo 3 maps is so that you can play the mulitplayer with all the maps. its the full fledged halo 3 multiplayer. with odst you can play the same multiplayer you have always been playing plus ALL the dlc plus the NEW dlc on one disc. no need to worry about hard drive space you just play it off the disc. its all right there, thank you bungie!

Devs all around want to make as much money as they can with every game they make !
No problem with that if they had made a very amazing game with super AI, art direction, replay value or some uber graphics so they could ask $60 for their game.

What I think it is interesting why some 1st/2nd party devs that makes games for the PS3 don;t ask like $100 for their games since many of these games took more then 4 years to develop, have unique engine and took many more devs to complete the game.

I was just wondering how a vendor in a store will explain to a costumer that a 40giga blu-ray disc PS3 game can cost the same thing of 8 Gigas game in a one DVD9 that should be cheap by now but it is not.

the relationship between MS and their fan base is pretty much the same as the relationship between a wife and an abusive husband. he keeps beating her up and she won't do anything because she loves him. campaign 3-5 hours = little less than normal at 5-6 so $50
2 new weapons = $5
firefight = $10 min
so thats $75 and if your like me i didn't buy the map packs i get those free.

also note this game is played differently than H3. health is managed different which changes the stratagy. the game is darker visior mode and what not

People seem to forget your also getting all of Halo 3 multiplayer. So anyone who dosent own Halo 3 will still be able to go online and play multiplayer games with Halo 3 players (obviously they cant play the original campaign co-op)

I only say that with caution because I haven't played it yet. 360 fans can argue with ps3 fans, but it does appear that Bungie & MS are playing its customers with all the Halo re-hashes. Yea, I am a PS3 fan, but I respect all the gaming companies, and their hard work in this genre. However, the Halo story/saga (IN MY OPINION!) ironically from it's 1st title...has not evolved.

Look at the Call of Duty, God of War, Mario Bros., and Resident Evil games. ALL EVOLUTION, INNOVATION, AND CREATIVITY. Nothing bad on Halo, but I see no reason for the latest games to be exclusive to only the 360. The graphics, story, weapons, frame rate, and multiplayer stuff could have been done on the 1st Xbox. AGAIN, I LOVED HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED, AND LIKED WHAT THE MULTIPLAYER IN HALO 2 DID. (Although I hated the cursing little kids and modders.)$60 bucks for an expansion pack is just in insult. This game was done last year and in classic fashion, Bungie & MS made it's wait on what appears to be an 4 hour expansion of Halo 3. ODST's contents are no secret, Halo fans know EXACTLY what is in e box and they know the price. Ask any true Halo fan would they rather pay 60 dollars to experience all that's included in the box of ODST or 29.99 for the 'Platinum' edition of Killzone 2 or 60 dollars for games like Haze or Section 8? Then try scream expansion all you want.

I applaud Bungie for always giving 360 fans what they want from this franchise. It doesn't matter if the usual detractors spend their internet time bashing what is obviously one of the biggest releases of 2009, the fans will speak on September 22nd. And thousands of them will be on a line a their local game at a midnight launch.

So next year, when the stats show that over a million people are still playing Firefight every day (because we absolutely know that Bungie will support ODST to the fullest) ask this silly question again

I was at a 360 launch...the system came out at $399...and only had NFS: Most Wanted, and Call of Duty 2...with NO Blu Ray drive or WiFi built in. Modern Warfare 2 will be hands down the biggest game period.

I loved Halo 1, but didn't like Halo 2 and 3.
I'm one of those "It's horribly overrated" people, and I'm also one of those people who question the loyalty of Bungie fans.

That being said, ODST looks really great, and I'll be buying it. The Firefight mode alone seems like it'll be worth the money.

Plus, I'd rather learn Halo 3 multiplayer and get into it, than to support Activision and CoD.
