Insomniac: New Ratchet & Clank Future Is Single-Player

Despite what the back of the box for Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time might have said, Insomniac Games newest PlayStation 3 exclusive will not feature a multiplayer component.

As cautioned earlier, that PS3 box art for the new Ratchet & Clank was based on a standard template and "not final," according to Insomniac. So don't expect to see a well hidden surprise multiplayer component in the final game, nor any of the other features listed in error.

"As we've said before, [Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time] is a single-player game, and has been planned as such from the very beginning," reads a statement. "We're totally focused on wrapping up the Ratchet & Clank Future story arc that we started in Tools of Destruction, and continued with Quest for Booty."

Or leaderboards. I'm guessing the thing on the back of the boxart that says "multiplayer, leaderboards, in-game invite" etc etc is just referring to the PSN itself, not the game. Since they have a PSN logo on there there's probably SOME type of online feature, but not necessarily multiplayer. There was also a PSN logo in the E3 trailer, which Uncharted 2's trailer also had but Heavy Rain's didn't, so there's got to be SOME type of PSN functionality, as minimal as it may be. Though my fingers are crossed for co-op.

for me, R&C is always SP exclusive games! there are so many things to do to keep playing it plus the trophies hunting, not having a MP is totally not a bad thing! I can't say this for every other game but R&C SHOULD stay SP! plus I hate hunting trophies online because I don't have friends locally that have a PS3 except 1 guy but he plays different types of games than mine! PS3 is still a premium item over here in Malaysia and I also can't wait for the slim to arrive!

Doesn't really matter to me, as long as the single-player is great. And it does also be decently long ~12 hours, and then I always play through the game twice. So I'm definitely getting it when it comes out, it is easily the best platformer this gen.

You can hate all you want, but the first Ratchet & Clank Future was short as hell and had absolutely no replay value except if you didn't collect all of the secret items, which you could have found just by playing the game better.

The point I'm trying to convey, is that we KNOW R&C is a great game. The problem is, is that there's games that offer a lot more for the same price. It just doesn't give us the incentive to shell out $60 for a game that we know we probably wont go back to unless to play it with our kids.

That being said, I will probably still pick this game up.

Didn't Naughty Dog say something similar about Uncharted 2 before they dropped that multiplayer trailer? I've learned that with Sony and Sony's 2nd parties that a flat-out denial of something definitely doesn't rule it out. I hope at the very least they have online and split-screen co-op.

EDIT: also look carefully at the quote, they don't deny a multiplayer component, and they don't say single player ONLY. They just say it's a "single player game," which you could also say about Call of Duty 4 or any game that has both multi and single. Cmoooooon co-op!

Considering the R&C ACIT is bigger in scope than TOD and, being a R&C game has built in replayability, I can say that MP will probably not matter. To be fair though, MP is purely incidental to me when I buy a game. If it has it, great. If not. It's no big deal.

The only thing R&C CAN NOT have is "too much variety." We all know how much reviewers hate variety.

Multiplayer is way overrated and it's not necessary for a great game (ie Uncharted). I can't for the life of me understand why Naughty Dawg had to add a multiplayer function into a great start for a series. But either way, I'll be looking forward to UC 2 and the new Ratchet.

new weapons is what makes every Ratchet game better and the same goes for Jak and Daxter, Jak got more combos and weapons which made the game better and so did Ratchet.

Unlike Crashbandicoot which completely failed starting with Crash Twinsanity.

Ratchets formulare is still the same which is why I still play it but the day the games gets messed up is the day I leave the franchise. Besides I've never played a Ratchet game online so I don't even know how good the online is in Ratchet and clank.

SP is all R/C needs. I'm super stoked for this game. All summer long we have been dying for the Fall/Winter line up and it's almost here!

The best thing about this game (for me) is the very well written story and excellent voice acting. Those damn pirates crack me up and I always day dream of when I first played Oddworld.

And I didn't mention graphics cause...duh. Top notch.

Multiplayer is ALL the same?

i mean, in the end, it's all just iterations of Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Assassination, Control Points, etc.

doesn't mean it's not fun, just that there isn't really anything new or fresh in the multi-player department.

adding experience points, perks, and classes most certainly helped (as i've been championing for DECADES now; having a little RPG in your game isn't a bad thing), but in the end, i've come to realize that i don't need a multi-player "fix" in every game.

i invested over 30 hours into Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and i STILL didn't unlock everything, or upgrade everything or purchase everything.

i'm buying A Crack in Time for it's robust single player, and anybody that thinks that they are getting LESS game in a Ratchet and Clank title, clearly haven't played any Ratchet and Clank titles.

it's not notoriously scored for "too much variety" for no reason, you know.

anyway, MP is overrated, and personally, after playing some MAG and Fat Princess, in which i was killed repeatedly, on PURPOSE by a douchebag teammate (MAG), and having the opposite team hide our princess in a glitch, so we couldn't rescue her, then have MY team do the same to THEIR princess, so it was a stalemate, makes me NEVER want to play with people online, and i already BARELY spend more than an hour a week online to begin with.

i enjoy an engrossing, well crafted single player campaign, and i don't think that every game needs MP.

i was in the Uncharted 2 beta, and while that was fun (especially the co-op mode), i'm getting the game for the SP, just like A Crack in Time.

this mentality that all games need to have MP is ridiculous. i'm dreading to think of how the MP in Bioshock 2 is going to turn out.

Im perfectly ok with no MP in the new R&C. Its still a day one purchase for me. Same for Uncharted 2 which also comes out in Oct. Anyway its good to see devs still pumping out excellent SP titles. Too many games today have shoddy MP tacked on which people dont even play more than once yet if a game has SP only it gets bad mouthed for no reason. I really dont understand that concept.

Not every game needs multiplayer. If every game had multiplayer, you'd never get around to getting in-depth with the multiplayer in all of your games. I'm glad inFamous didn't have multiplayer, because it would have cut Killzone 2 off at the knees for me. I like to have one great multiplayer game every 6 months to a year that keeps me entertained. All other games I play in that span of time will be single-player.

had Trophies and Achievements. they are called "Skill Points," and are the exact same thing as Trophies and Achievements: rewards for performing certain skillful things in the game.

in R&C however, the Skill Points actually DID something, instead of extending your e-peen; they would give you points that you would use to buy unlockables and cheats.

personally, i don't need Trophies or Achievements to artificially extend my game's playtime. if the game is good enough, i'll play through it numerous times just because it's fun.

i've replayed Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and Ratchet numerous times (over 5 times each), just because the games are so much fun, i enjoy playing them over again, even AFTER getting the Platinum in Uncharted).
