"PS3 is starting to reveal its power" says Buzz developer

The UK studio Relentless, responsible for Buzz, talk in the latest issue of Develop magazine about how they've found moving from the previous generation to the latest PS3 hardware.

They were comfortable making games for the PS2 but when they migrated to the PS3 they found it harder than they thought it would be. But now that they have everything in place with the right arts and technical people, they say that the "PS3 is starting to reveal its power to us."

They admit that the PS3 is a complicated machine to write for but that the new PlayStation Edge technology suite has made it a lot easier for them and they're really impressed with what they've been able to display on the screen.

Quote from the article
"When we're walking around the studio we're starting to see things on people's screens that really make you stop in your tracks to look at. It has taken us longer than we would have liked, but we're really happy with what we're seeing for PS3."

I wonder if this means there will be a new Buzz game. There have been a lot that came out in Europe and not much if at all any in North America. I think these are fun games that with Singstar could bring in more casual gamers and so I think it would be cool to see a new one.

At first it takes time for developers to get acquainted with the new hardware on any new console, to find the most efficient way of doing things and building tool sets and libraries so they don't have to re-invent the wheel each time they write a new game.

About a year after release we really start seeing what a console is capable of, such as the excellent looking Gears of War on the 360 for example. It's still relatively early days for both consoles, within a couple of years though it'll be interesting to see just how close the PS3 and 360 will be in performance terms. By then developers will know a lot more about how to fully optimise each specific system.

New tools such as "PlayStation Edge" mentioned in the article show that it's not just processing power, but features that can help the way your program, that can really make a difference. Either way, both systems will only get better and that's something we should all be looking forward to!
