Batman: Arkham Asylum - Will It Be Game Of The Year?

With the majority of Batman: Arkham Asylum reviews scoring above 9/10, the game's metacritic ranking currently at 91, and an immensely positive reception from fans, could Batman: Arkham Asylum be a contender for Game Of The Year 2009?

Great game but no, Uncharted 2 is coming out this year. Not only is it already rated best looking and most engaging but now it has multiplayer. I know game of the year will go to COD:MW2 but uncharted will be by far it's greatest rival.

with Sean, that more than likely Uncharted 2 will get Game of the Year, even with Modern Warfare 2 on it's tail. Although, I wouldn't rule of Scribblenauts on the DS, which is a game that is totally unique!

Don't get me wrong, Batman: Arkham Asylam is superb, and definatly one of the best comic book games ever made, which is a rarity to this type of genre of game, but GOTY? Nahhhh.

It could of been a completly different story if some of the bigger titles (Bioshock 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain etc), didn't get put back until 2010.

Modern Warfare 2 will not have a superb story and believable charcters like Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 has also the grafics bonus.

And Killzone 2 is a strong contender for Best Shooter 2009, i think it's more unique than MW2 (MW 1.5?). I hope you know what i mean.. But still, MW2 and Uncharted 2 are my most wanted games.. Great gaming year!

I wasn't floored by this game or anything, it was decent but it did get repetitive, and the combat was a little too simple. I also found that the stealth elements didn't really play a significant role.

Personally, I think Infamous was a little better.

Batman has some hefty comp. Infamous is going to get some consideration (though the fact that it came out so early in the year will probably hurt it). Then there's Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Forza 3, and maybe even GT5.

And I do want a sequel to Batman AA. I'd love to see these guys do this type of game again but this time with all of Gotham City open to explore.

The first uncharted is probably the most underrated game this gen. Sure it's not for everyone, but the general consesus is that it scored lower than what it deserved, perhaps because of the negative image the ps3 had at the time. It was way ahead of contemporary games when it released.

batman AA is a good game but it has a lot of flaws.. stupid ai, a lot of backtracking (seriously DMC4 was criticized for that), repetitive game mechanics (the solution for every probably is to look for a vent), and no replay value (played it on hard the first time and got all the trophies, but the challenge rooms may extend the replay value a little bit)

and oh yeah, killzone does not have FLAWS like this. you can nitpick about the story etc but that just stupid.

Best game I've played this year has been inFamous. That wasn't a sequel. I've yet to played Batman though. Money's tight.

I loved inFamous, but I'd say Batman is actually better. Weird, eh? Well...I guess it's how you look at it. Both had very high production values and were incredibly fun throughout. inFamous has much more replay value though. I just wish Sucker Punch had given us more to the whole Trish/Cole thing...and just more story in general. It was a good story, but...with only three boss battles...I don't know. Could have been better. Those guys KNOW how to do boss battles...why limit themselves to only three?

I still say U2 will probably deserve GOTY. MW2 will be great, but not Uncharted 2 great. It's just too good. It's like going up against Bioshock or Shadow of the Colossus. No matter how good your game is...no matter how many awards your game wins...anyone who's played Bioshock or SotC knows there are very few games out there that can compete. I think the same will go for Uncharted 2. I really do.

Also, yes...September 17th is when the Office comes back! I'm hoping the writing has gotten back to normal. Season 5 was an epic fail for the most part!

I don't know, LeonSKennedy4Life. For the most part I thought season 5 was a great step up from season 4, which I consider to be the low-point in the series (besides season 1, haha). In season 5, you had Michael finally being acknowledged for his good work, and it showed that despite him being an idiot, he knows how to run a profitable paper company. He went through a great arc with the Charles Minor storyline in which he learned how valuable he really is, and what he's really capable of.

Season 5 was a very Michael-centric season. Now that I think about it, most of the seasons have been "centric" to someone. Seasons 1 and 2 were Jim-centric (him wanting to be with Pam and her not having a clue), Season 3 was Pam-centric (her finally realizing her love for Jim but not being able to be with him), and Season 4 was Dwight-centric (his emotional breakdown after he and Angela broke up). I'm hoping season 6 will be "everyone-centric" just so more of the background people can get more screen time.

My favorite games of the year so far have been Tales of Monkey Island & The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, Shadow Complex, Killzone 2, inFamous, Resident Evil 5, Flower, Demon's Souls, and Batman Arkham Asylum. And my two favorites out of that list of favorites are definitely Demon's Souls & Batman Arkham Asylum.

I played both games. I loved both games.

However, Uncharted had a much more involved and intricate storyline...with possibly some of the greatest scoring this generation.

COD4 reinvented multi-player. I understand that. IW usually does that with every iteration of the series. I'm sure this one will be no different.

You're failing to see that Uncharted 2 has multi-player also. I was in the first beta. It was INCREDIBLE! I played that beta more than Killzone 2 or COD4! It's like counter strike, metal gear online, and the actual platforming from Uncharted all mixed together. It's definitely going to turn heads.

If you haven't seen the Uncharted 2 videos, I'd highly suggest doing so. It looks phenomenal! The script, the voice acting, the gameplay in general, the mechanics, the score...everything is pitch-perfect.

MW2 will be great in every way...but will ultimately not be the package U2 will be.

So, reviews are REALLY that important to you?

I'm sorry that the gaming community has turned you into the freak you are.

MW2 is not the same stuff again as COD4. yes the graphics aren't that much bettter, but the game's single player looks much more colourful, and frankly more of the same is good when it comes to Cod4's single player. They also removed unlimited spawning, so that'll be way less annoying on veteran. I don't get the hate for Cod4's single player. It was epic, awesome, and filled with amazing set pieces,tight action and amazing pacing. The pacing of the game is what really made me love it so much more, the way that you switched gameplay types, from all out assualt to sneaking through the country made me sit on the edge of my seat. everyone please play through Cod4's singleplayer again on hardened, i had the most fun on that diffuclty and that's how cod is meant to be played. More of the same in different settings and a new story sounds really good to me.

Now what makes MW2 different is multiplayer. From what i have seen, custom killstreaks will add a ton of fun and make the game more interesting, so will upgradeable perks(check PSM3 scans for that). I bet IW have tons of surprises, so don't judge till the game comes out.

As for Uncharted, the first one was a very good game, I had a lot of fun playing it. I'm looking forward to Uncharted 2, which looks absolutely amazing. I think eventually GOTY will go to MW2, but i don't give a crap, because i will be enjoying both these games regardless of what reviewevers say is better. Sorry for the rant i hate when Cod 4 and MW2 are attacked like that.

Yes obviously there will be improvements just like every other sequel out there, and i have no doubt MW2 will be good. However i was actually questioning what exactly is so mind-blowing about the stuff shown so far, since i haven't seen anything unique or incredible yet.

Don't get me wrong, I loved COD4 and kept it longer than i thought i would, but i sort of moved on since then. Like i said before, this isn't '07 anymore, times have changed and frankly it takes quite a bit to impress me.

I bet someone (magazine, tv show, gaming site, etc.) names Batman AA game of the year, it deserves whatever rewards it gets.

Also the game is not overrated, its a great game on all fronts. In fact I had no confidence in this game prior to its release, so its fun factor and quality come as quite a surprise to me. What else has Rocksteady done besides this, all I know is that when they make their next game we will hear, "from the makers of Batman Arkham Asylum...." This game is a reputation maker for Rocksteady, good job.

I enjoyed the demo, but unless there's some major variety further into it, I can imagine I'd get a bit bored with the full game pretty quickly. Not doing it down - It just isn't really my thing.

I still feel (based purely on the first game of course) that UNCHARTED 2 should clinch GOTY because of the depth, characters, direction and general 'playfulness' of the concept.

No, the demo doesn't represent all Batman:AA has to offer. There's upgrading combat and weapons, exploration/treasure hunting for Riddler's riddles, minor puzzles, bosses that feel nicely varied...

People forget that Uncharted had better graphics than CoD4, and yet that game still was GOTY. Its about gameplay and IW knows their stuff. CoD4 was a freaking amazing game, having a sequel to that game alone with the same developer makes it automatically a GOTY contender.

I will say, the Scarecrow battles are fricking awesome. And that little handheld device you get about 20% of the way in to hack computers is SWEET. I love how batman looks around while you do it.

Infamous and Batman definately get game of the year from me. You can have your same old recycled fps war games, so burnt out on those games. Still, best game this gen so far i would have to say Dead Space. Just an awesome game period. Batman is quite an incredible game from the minute the game opens, wheeling the joker down to Arkham as hes laughing and trying to push everyones buttons is very memorable. I felt like i was playing a movie and the graphics, omg!
