Best Buy Offering Free Games To Prevent PS3 Slim Trade-Ins

With the PlayStation 3 Slim starting to show up at Best Buys around the country, the national retailer has kicked off a plan to try and cut-down on the number of people returning a recent PS3 for the newer PS3 Slim, sourced tell Kotaku.

An internal memo, verified independently by a number of employees at different stores, shows that Best Buy is offering people who come into the story to exchange recently purchased PlayStation 3's for the newly released PS3 Slim a choice of a free PlayStation 3 title in lieu of the new slimmer, larger-hard-drive sporting console.

The_Darkest_Red5371d ago

Wow that would be so unfortunate if you bought a PS3 and found out a few days later that the slim was announced. Oh well, I guess you should have done some research and seen all the rumors floating around.

Anyway, its cool that Best Buy is trying to do something for the consumers who got a little unlucky with this deal.

Silellak5371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

I intentionally picked up a 160 gig Fat PS3 the night the price drop was announced. I liked the look of the older model, and preferred the guaranteed reliability of the older model vs. something that's thus far unproven.

It's likely the Slim will have no problems, but in the end, I decided to go with the older hardware. So far, no regrets.

A bit more on topic...I actually got my PS3 at Best Buy, so maybe I should advantage of this unofficial "deal". A free copy of Infamous would actually make the 160 gig bundle at $400 a much better deal. Of course if they don't get the memo and actually accept my trade-in, that would suck.

IdleLeeSiuLung5371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

The slim although added better sound support removed the alternative OS support that the phat has. I don't think going to 45nm will have significant impact as the 65nm is quiet as a whisper already.

I also prefer the phat instead of a further cheapened PS3 version. It seems with every iteration Sony does to the PS3, it has less features and now also looks cheaper. I guess we can't complain, since we asked for a price cut!!!

Yeah, the returns for a slim version will hurt both Sony and the retailer. That is a great idea, but does it cost Best Buy that much to ship the product back to Sony or is Sony supporting this with those games? Great idea though on whoever thought this up!

f7897905371d ago

FREE GAME!!! If they start to process the trade-in, grab your ps3 and run out the door.

Chimerhazzard5371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

My PS3 is pretty recent too, and boy am I glad I bought one. I don't want to badmouth the ps3 slim, but I don't like the design very much, compared to the old model. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice looking console but there is something about the fat Ps3 that just makes me want to scream "THIS IS SO AWESOME". But then again, the slim is smaller and it would come in handy when I want to take it somewhere :P

randomwiz5371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

Actually it doesn't hurt Sony at all. Best Buy is one of the retailers that purchased all of their stock before they sell it.

Circuit City is an example of a retailer that does the opposite. The get a product from Sony, sell it, and then pay Sony for that product. The problem with this is that when they went bankrupt, they were over $100 million in debt to Sony alone

AAACE55370d ago

I intended to get the slim when it came out, but after putting further thought into it, I decided I liked the regular version as well, so I got an 80 gig. Looks nice!

FamilyGuy5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

"I also prefer the phat instead of a further cheapened PS3 version. It seems with every iteration Sony does to the PS3, it has less features and now also looks cheaper. I guess we can't complain, since we asked for a price cut!!!"

GTFO
slim runs cooler,
consumes less power than all other models,
cost less,
processes some audio stream people were asking for,
has a larger HDD
AND has integration with Bravia tvs

I'd take all that over loosing a Linux boot option ANY DAY.
Besides that, I've heard that the Other OS option is STILL available BUT it has to be done externally, like on an external HDD

And it's not "ugly" either, go to a gamestop and check one out in person, the thing is nice.

randomwiz

Wow, that SUCKS.

On Topic:
This is a good deal but what if you bought your 160Gb bundle at $500 just a day/week before the announcement? A $60 game hardly covers that.

sorceror1715370d ago

Sorry, FamilyGuy, OtherOS is *gone* in the Slim, even on an external drive.

Though as you say, the Linux option only appeals to a tiny fraction of the market. Almost certainly less than the number of people who own Bravia TVs, really.

I'm glad I have a phat, because I'm one of those weirdos who put Linux on their machine, and I don't have a Bravia. For most people, I agree that the Slim's a better fit.

IdleLeeSiuLung5370d ago

Sorry, but the list of things you listed are just natural progression. The only new thing is the new sound capabilities that as I said only a fraction will use. I would take the Linux option any day, but that is arguably as little used as the newly added sound options. Although I think the Linux option adds a lot more possibilities on the PS3.

I will never use the sound option as I don't have the equipment nor do I want to invest into it.

What irks me, is that with EVERY ITERATION OF THE PS3, THERE ARE FEATURES TAKEN OUT. Now they are even taking out features that is just in software. Why? It doesn't cost them anything to leave it on there, after all it is already developed.

Shame they didnt visit... the internet. They would of known about the Slim months ago, not only known but have it continually rammed down their throat :)

MoonlightProwler5371d ago

Sony should do some serious advertising in North America. Slim looks awesome.

peeps5371d ago

well yes but there were that many rumors it was hard to tell if it was true/when we'd see it. my ps3 broke about a month ago and i replaced it the next day. there were plenty of slim rumors but i didn't know exactly when it would release and if the rumors were true.

theres that many sites trying to get hits it's hard to take everything you hear on the internet as fact

zeeshan5371d ago

They need to push the advertisement pedal. Really, the slim is new, it can do a bunch of things and it's a VERY POWERFUL MACHINE and is now pretty affordable. Sony realllyy needs to be aggressive with their marketing. I have noticed though that most recently, they have been doing all the right things. It's like they learned from their mistakes and have had a to-do list like

Reduce the price - Check
Add more games to greatest hits - Check
Enhance firmware - Check
Add more spaces to Home - Check
Manufacture a slim - Check

I hope the list keeps going on and on :)

SuperSaiyan45371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

But I know that stores such as Gamestation and GAME no longer and for a long time now allow customers who have purchased a console to just bring it back cos they didnt want it. So am wondering can customers in the USA do that? As I was aware that with games they cannot return them at all?

Also I own the original PS3 60gb and to be honest I love how shines all over and the memory slots and bc that is offered along with 4usb ports and internal power supply. I totally dislike those tacky buttons on the new slim along with its new design and logo etc.
The only thing about the slim that is interesting is the HD audio.

jerethdagryphon5371d ago

id agree with you except mine got scratched :( and sony wont let me pay for a new cover plate

darthv725371d ago

The fat is the best of the bunch (IMO). In fact I just ordered a 320gb seagate 7200 16mb cache 2.5" hdd for my fatty. $70 at newegg.

Plus the fat just looks so nice and shiny in a home theater center. The slim looks like it belongs in the kids room.

solidt125371d ago

"The slim looks like it belongs in the kids room."

Yep and that is why it is going to sale like hotcakes. Looks more like something I feel more comfortable letting little Jimmy have in his room without fear of it breaking.

joydestroy5371d ago

you should've gotten the 5400RPM. look up articles regarding a 7200 and the PS3 and you'll see why i say that.

darthv725371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

I get what ur sayin. Maybe it is me but I know what is under the hood and wouldnt really trust the quality of such a machine in the hands of my gamecube/ps2 scale of kids. Those systems are expendable if necessary. PS3...not so much.

The look and price are matched for each other. Now sony needs to get a hold of their marketing dept if they want to sell to the wii crowd. The thing is, the wii is THE thing to have regardless of performance. Those who didnt get one last xmas will most likely get one this xmas over the more value proven ps3 or even the 360.

Just a hunch I am all to worried will come true again.

@joy...I read a few articles and what interested me most about this hdd was the amount of cache it had. Most of the other models I looked at (be it 5400 or 7200) had 8mb of cache. I am figuring the more cache the quicker it would load common stuff like going back and forth between games to the xmb. 5400 would certainly be quieter and create less heat.

f7897905371d ago

Physical buttons? The touch surface buttons made me freak out over how awsome the ps3 was. And why on earth is it not shiny anymore? I can understand doing that for the PspGo because your touching it, but you aren't going to get fingerprints over a stationary console.

Chimerhazzard5371d ago

Oh the fingerprints... and the scratches... True that. The PS3 phat looks awesome, but I stress each time I have to grab mine... it gets scratched SO EASILY, and then there's fingerprints all over the place. But hey, it's shiny :D

joydestroy5371d ago (Edited 5371d ago )

@darthv72

you didn't research enough. there is little to no performance improvements when going from the 5400 to the 7200 because the PS3 can't utilize it. it was designed with the 5400 in mind. but hey, your console. i wouldn't take the chance of it overheating, but then again i have an original 60gb model that's virtually irreplaceable now.

oh, and here's a quick source, i just googled "5400 or 7200 ps3"
http://boardsus.playstation...

EDIT: there are some false accusations within that forum thread, but what i've said is accurate. apparently there is an IGN article addressing this as well. one user said:

"If you read the IGN article, they said 7200 RPM Hard Drives are actually slower than 5400 RPM Hard Drives in the PS3."

darthv725371d ago

My ps3 is the 80gb motorstorm edition. I have not opened it up to see the exact model but lets say it is a 5400 rpm 8mb cache drive. Wouldnt it be more beneficial to not only increase the speed but also the cache capacity?

Going from 5400 to 7200 would generate more heat/noise (although this is a newer model of momentous drive so it is supposed to run cooler and quiet) yet it also has 16mb of cache. Other drives I have looked at from hitachi and fujitsu seem to have 8mb standard for the same price as this one which is faster and more cache.

Some of the articles I have read are also posted from the late 06 and 07 time frame. I am sure drives have been improved to require less power while improving performance since then. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info.

jack_burt0n5371d ago

there is a real world performance increase of ppl i know who have tested 7200 and even some ssd have reported some things can get alot quicker as far as heat goes i would only worry if ur ps3 is already on the noisy side otherwise it will be fine.

Why? Because we have to support SONY by buying it, not by trading our old models.

If you want the new model so bad, just sell your old model or trade-in at gamestop, but you'll know they'll fork you bad...

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro62d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7262d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_62d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga62d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2362d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200062d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin62d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole62d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix62d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198962d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

The inFamous games deserve more love from Sony

Would like remasters of 1 and 2. I enjoyed them much more than Second Son.

1 & 2 had more of an emphasis on climbing and the traversal requires a bit more effort in a good way. It was rewarding. Second Son made climbing mostly obsolete so they put little effort into it. The traversal was just great in inFamous 1 & 2. There's a reason Sunset Overdrive copied and improved upon the induction grind mechanic.

Reminds me of how I felt about the decline of parkour and the well designed tombs (basically Prince Of Persia levels) that we saw in the Assassin's Creed games.

The story and atmosphere were also much better in 1 & 2.

Electricity is just a brilliant superpower for an open world city. It perfectly fits just like webslinging does in New York and it has many applications.

Cacabunga81d ago

For sure.. one of my favorite Sony licenses

Shane Kim81d ago

Loved one and two. I actually liked the story as well.

Minute Man 72181d ago

The standalone DLC was a sweet

jznrpg81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

I enjoyed Second Son but it was too short. The first 2 were great though

-Foxtrot80d ago

Second Son was alright but didn't touch the first two games

It felt short and lacking in comparison

Also I really thought Reggie would have made a better protagonist, someone who is anti-conduit as much as him and ends up becoming one would have been interesting to see. I kind of enjoyed his character throughout the game as his development.

badz14980d ago

why is it right now, the thing I want the most from Sony is to release remasters of inFamous (1,2 & SS), KZ (1,2 & 3), Resistance (RFoM, 2 and 3) and Motorstorm (1,2 & 3)??

The_Hooligan80d ago

All great choices. I would like to add Warhawk/Starhawk to that. The multiplayer in Warhawk was amazing. I am surprised Sony hasn't looked into MAG either. That game was ahead of its time.

Maybe Sony should make an internal studio like Bluepoint games and all they do is remake/remaster these amazing games, even going back to PS1,PS2,PSP, Vita portfolio. And because of the recent articles suggesting cost cutting, budget issues and releasing more games on PC, they could do that with these remakes/remasters. Do a day one on PC and PS5. At the end of the day Sony or any other company is going to do what makes them the most money.

Kiryu199280d ago

Wouldn't the onus be on the consumers? If they bought the Infamous games, then we'd have more games from that series.

KwietStorm_BLM81d ago

Infamous has sold millions of units. People have been asking for more. They aren't interested. Just like people have been asking for more Resistance or even a remaster collection, but insomniac isn't revisiting that either. Likely never getting a new sequel since they're a Marvel studio now.

LucasRuinedChildhood81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

No. Infamous was successful. But after a few entries (which are taking longer to make these days) a lot of Sony studios move on to new IPs. That's not a bad thing at all. They don't need to make inFamous games forever, just like we didn't need new Sly Cooper games forever.

But people would like to be able to easily play them on current hardware which is reasonable. Same for Killzone, Resistance, MGS4, etc. Good games shouldn't be trapped on old hardware. It's good that Bluepoint ported Uncharted 1-3.

kpgs81d ago

I'm not saying it wasn't successful. I enjoyed playing all 3 entries and DLC. But like you said, people move on, studios move on. But I don't think I've heard people asking for more Infamous in a long time.

Profchaos81d ago

The franchise was popular we got quite a few games but Suchet punch wanted to beach out I think that's why we got ghost of Tsushima over infamous 4

Tbh ghost is a fantastic game I'm not complaining about that but I'd love to see infamous handled by another team

jznrpg80d ago

Id take GoT2 over Infamous right now but after GoT2 or maybe 3 if they go trilogy I’d like a new Infamous.

badz14980d ago

that's the problem with Sony that puzzles me A LOT! they have studios specifically specialized in remastering and remaking old games for new gen hardware, but we are getting very few of them. SoTC, Uncharted collections, Demon's Souls Remake, TLoU Part 1...and?? that's it? why aren't they giving their old games new lease of life on the PS5 for the new generations of gamers to enjoy? they clearly have the expertise. for god sake, I can even accept lazy porting like Nintendo are doing for theirs if I have to.

FinalFantasyFanatic80d ago

There are a lot of games that consumers have been asking Playstation for, Playstation won't do it, so a lot of these developers have gone and made it themselves by any means possible such as Kickstarter (e.g. Armed Fantasia, Penny Blood, Ratatan, 100 Heroes, ect...). Developers have even asked if Sony could help them out with porting/remasters some of these older games for Playstation, they said no.

Crows9080d ago (Edited 80d ago )

Um...dude like you say that as if nobody bought them....the devs went on to do ghosts after 3 infamous games....3

People ask for new resistance and new infamous at every moment where it makes sense to mention it.

Having a remake of 1 and 2 would be very welcomed I'm sure.

I would love to see a new game but a feel that would get a response similar to Saints Row.

TravsVoid81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

If they keep any of the characters from the previous games I think it would do fine unlike Saints Row which decided to replace fan favorites with less likable replacements. I wouldn't be surprised if that decision caused a majority of their buyers to be new to the series rather than returning players. I will say though, if Infamous Second Son or the first two Infamous games were remade I would be a day one buyer on PC.

ocelot0781d ago

Loved all 3 of them. I couldn't get on with the vampire spin off though. Wish they didn't move away from cole but I didn't mind the other character.

Nixxes Software Can't Go Wrong With An Infamous Remaster

Nixxes' Remaster focus could set the stage to resurrect many obscure titles like the karma-centered, superpower-fueled sandbox of Infamous.

maniacmayhem297d ago

Infamous remaster? How about an Infamous re-Boot! This is one game that doesn't need a remaster, it needs either a proper equal of a reboot of the original. And since Sony is currently in development with Marvel, i can totally see them having guest marvel characters to appear in Cole's world.

BanginTunes296d ago

This is one of the worst things I have ever read

1Victor296d ago

I would prefer Warhawk or Starhawk ether or both will keep us fans happy for a looooooooong time

The_Hooligan296d ago

Warhawk would be awesome! So many good memories playing that game on PS3. They could do a massive 50v50 mode, battle royal with last Warhawk standing, classic 20v20 mode, so many options.

shinoff2183296d ago

I'd rather infamous. Sonys got enough online bs in the pipeline. No need to add more.

1Victor296d ago

@shinoff I disagree with you both of those games was extraordinarily fun to play just the satisfaction of transforming your plane into a bot and stomp a enemy then transform and fly off on Starhawk was a experience that hasn’t been replicated since.
The game was extremely valanced to the point you could go against a tank on foot and win with the ratchet or 1 shot a plane doing a massive attack with your tank. In Warhawk you could pick up half your team and fly them to a base and take it over but those are experiences you had to play to know how awesome those game was even YouTube videos don’t do justice to those game.
Anyways I’ll stop here or I’ll run out of words to post a wall text taking about those games

Christopher296d ago

Here's the thing, infamous and *hawk are such different games and with different audiences that Sony could... do both at the same time? Nixxes doesn't need to be involved in the shooter (that would be new for them I think since they usually do SP games) but someone else could and Nixxes could share support with development/engine needs.

shinoff2183296d ago

1victor

Ya know Christopher is right they are completly different games. Me personally I don't value online games I just don't care for them. Hell in another bubble I probably enjoy them. In this bubble nah I just prefer single player unless I'm playing Mario or Mario party with my girl and kids or something.

1Victor295d ago

@shin of course I know Chris is right but the games have to be approved first before assignment to a studio I didn’t mean this studio in particular making those game I meant the approval process and Sony harder push on MMO games.

A remaster would allow people who don't have access to a ps3 to experience the game since there's so many stuck on the ps3 that are exclusive to the console and Sony refuses to invest in backwards compatibility

darthv72296d ago

Who doesnt have access to a ps3? There were over 87m of them sold. They are cheap and easy to find. Just like wii and ps2.

shinoff2183296d ago

Or maybe it's just not ready yet, ps3 was a different kinda animal.

DankSinatra296d ago

@darthv72

Not everyone is willing to go out and buy a ps3 for a single game or a handful of games when they have a ps4 or a ps5. A port or remaster would actually help. Younger audiences who did not grow up with a ps3 would have exposure to these games that Sony has essentially left behind on the ps3 due to them not investing in backwards compatibility. If they would do backwards compatibility then we wouldn't need to shill out more money for the same games. Something I actually applaud microsoft for (the only thing they have done that's good).

zaanan296d ago

Vits297d ago

There is a lot of the PS3 era that I would love to see ported/remastered. But, unfortunately, they are probably not commercially viable and I have no idea who owns the rights currently. Stuff like Sire: Blood Curse, White Knight Chronicles, Tokyo Jungle, Folklore, etc.

Infamous on the other hand was never a series that I found good or interesting. Especially when compared with other contemporaries like Prototype. But, given how bare the subgenre is right now, I would dig a remaster.

BehindTheRows296d ago

Sony owns Siren. I can’t speak for the rest.

As for inFAMOUS vs Prototype, I feel the opposite. inFAMOUS mopped the floor with it, quality and gameplay. Just felt far more polished. That said, I enjoyed Prototype’s powers a little more.

Vits296d ago

Fair enough, I agree that the production values of inFamous were higher. But I found it to be a snore-fest.

...no meed. Sony could add ps3 support to the 5 and then people can play loads of games already available. No streaming required. Rpcs3 could be adapted to run on the 5... it would solve so many problems.

Vits296d ago

No need, because they instead could do these two other things that they have shown no interest in doing? Sure.

But then they couldnt charge you for remaster (even though I would love one for infamous) or charge you for PSN premium.

It would be even funnier if the series x gets rpcs3 support and can play the ps3 games while ps5 still cannot (not without streaming them)

Don't most people still have issues with rpcs3. It's not as stable as alot of emulators out there. From what I've read

Infamous, Resistance, and killzine are so ripe for a remaster, I wish Sony would make it happen.
