CNET Review: Sony PlayStation 3 Slim - 120GB

David Carnoy of CNET writes:

"Needless to say, Sony hopes that a trimmed down--and less expensive--PS3 Slim will similarly invigorate sales of the PlayStation 3, which has lagged behind the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 and has taken some of the luster off the PlayStation brand (even as earlier versions of the PS3 received high marks from this publication). To many industry observers, the Slim PS3 represents a moment of reckoning for the PS3--a chance at redemption if you will--and clearly some serious engineering has gone into the creation of Sony's latest black gaming box and media player.

If you're a fan of the PS3 or have been sitting on the fence, waiting for its price to drop to $299, the good news is that from a features standpoint, the 120GB Slim PS3 is nearly identical to the 80GB and the 160GB "fat" PS3 models that Sony's in the process of phasing out. Aside from losing the capability to install another OS (Linux) on your PS3, nothing much else has changed."

No, most likely not.

CNET sucks, period.

LordMarius5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

4/5
Excellent

so not bad

"The good: More affordable $299 price; slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation; all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface; doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player; built-in Wi-Fi; 120GB hard drive; HDMI output with 1080p support; no external power supply; built-in Web browser; free online gaming service.

The bad: Lacks backward support for PS2 games; no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes aren't compatible; online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren't as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they're getting better.

The bottom line: With a smaller design, more energy-efficient operation, lower price tag, and built-in Blu-ray and multimedia capabilities, the PS3 Slim delivers a compelling package for an affordable price. "

Dragun6195363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

The Bottom Line is that most people are gonna get a PS3 Slim not because of Cnet, but the Impressive Line up that it has this year and the next, along with the fact that it plays blu-ray, Free online, wifi, and a 120gb hard drive for only $299. It's a steal!

meepmoopmeep5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

meh,

skip the ps3 slim
i'd rather buy a blu-ray playing laptop

:)

sonarus5363d ago

The PS3 slim offers everything the 80GB PS3 offers (-linux installation) which 99% of PS3 owners don't use anyway.

Its not trying to be more than the PS3 its just offering the exact same deal in a smaller more compact size which is a plus because PS3 is HUGE AS FCUK

meepmoopmeep5363d ago

yeah, i don't think linux matters much to most people

raztad5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

@meep

I know you are being sarcastic, but this is a honest question/comment.

Why just ONE BD player? I got two, my PS3 and my laptop (in fact a BD player/burner). Its just absurd to get a laptop w/o AT LEAST BD playback.

@meep

Well, you are looking at BD just as a media/entertainment device. BD is more than that. Just a single BD can keep 25G of data, a two layer one 50G. 10 BDs == 500G HD. BD is perfect for backup/storage needs.

meepmoopmeep5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

i don't need blu-ray on my laptop

i have no need for it.
when i watch a movie i want it on big screen with surround sound

i might get myself a slim for a 2nd blu-ray player though.

Trollimite5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

your last article on the ps3 prevents me from clicking that link! i want you guys to know that i will never visit your site, nor will i consider any of your other news, negative or positive.

thank you and have a good day!

likedamaster5363d ago

Sony did a great job making that bad girl slimmer. Props to them. That slim is looking more and more appealing.

zok3105363d ago

The review was not biased and to be honest it was very informative.

CWMR5363d ago

-Props to Sony on this. This is exactly what they needed.-

chaosatom5363d ago

CNET = not respectable in my eyes

Ri0tSquad5363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

Everything else can be solved through firmware updates. Not saying it will happen over night but just technically speaking.

They need to fire whoever wrote that other article.

morganfell5363d ago

@ Trollimite,

Damn straight. They are not getting another click form me. Bubbles.

Am I the only one who thinks the PS3 slim is ugly as sin? I'm glad I have the original in this case, it looks cheaper (even though it is), like the 360...

I can't understand why people are saying they are going to trade in their original units for this.

Guido5363d ago

Why? They have been one of the worst sites for electronics reviews for the past few years now. I hope nobody takes this site seriously. They are a joke no matter what they give any product.

Sarcasm5363d ago

"I can't understand why people are saying they are going to trade in their original units for this. "

Don't know either. HOWEVER, it'd be interesting to see how "cooler" the slim actually runs. If it does run significantly cooler than the current PS3, I might get one. Simply because my room gets too hot after about an hour session with a PS3 game. My fiance complains all the time about it.

Sibs5363d ago

It looks like it runs at 73 watts instead of 110 watts, that should make a big difference.

callahan095363d ago (Edited 5363d ago )

I actually don't agree with their "bad" reasons. Why would they have expected them to put in PS2 BC or an IR sensor when neither version of the PS3 "Fat" currently being produced has those features? I definitely didn't expect it to have those features.

But what really sticks in my craw is the last reason: "online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren't as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they're getting better."

OK, first of all, how are "commerce options" not as fully developed as Xbox Live? I can use my credit card to buy any amount I want, not having to buy a set amount of points like I do on Xbox Live that don't even come in the same increments that games cost! I mean, games on Xbox Live cost increments of 400 points, but you can only buy points in increments of 500, so you always have money left over unless you buy your game via Amazon.com (which is exactly what I did yesterday when I bought Shadow Complex). And you can go out to any number of stores and buy a PlayStation Network card and redeem the code for purchases if you don't have a credit card you can or want to use. How are commerce options not "fully developed"?

And online gaming is remarkable for a free service. You've got games like LittleBigPlanet where Sony hosts over a million user-created levels on-demand. You can play games like Resistance 2 in 30 vs. 30 multiplayer, completely lag-free, with very in-depth stat-tracking and ranking, etc. The online gaming is excellent on the PS3. I prefer having PSN for free than I do Xbox Live for a fee. I was in an Xbox Live party chat yesterday with a few of my friends, in fact, and I found the whole thing pretty annoying. Everybody was interrupting each other and nobody could really get a word in edge-wise because there's too many people trying to say something at once with no way to know when somebody else is just about to open their mouths. Maybe it was just the group I was with and the time of day and the combination of games we were playing, but it wasn't exactly pleasant. I'd love PSN to have cross-game voice chat, between 2 people, and I guess with the right group of people in the party chat, I can see the coolness factor in that, too. But really, that stuff is completely auxiliary to the function of PLAYING GAMES ONLINE, which PSN does perfectly well for free, and it's not worth it to have to pay a fee just to do that, even if that fee includes other functions.

meepmoopmeep5362d ago

true, Blu-ray can be a storage medium

but i assume the write times will be super long
and i could just use/get an external HDD for that

but yeah, it can be good for some people
for me personally i have no need for blu-ray on laptops
and don't even see a point of them being on them.

randomwiz5362d ago

Cnet's going to do a prize fight with ps3 vs 360 as soon as microsoft formally announces a price cut

darthv725362d ago

My review is based on simply what I have seen and what it "MAY" actually be like. First thing about it would be the texture and feel of the unit. It may be slimmer and lighter and in that I am reminded of the 3DO FZ-10. It had the same functionality of the original heavier FZ-1 but felt really really cheap.

There are some advantages to that design but not to someone who has a nice home entertainment center. Something that cheap looking should go in the kids room (which may very well be the target). Best comparison is those cheap dvd players you find at target or walmart for $40. You know the ones I am talking about.

Looks aside, you can bet it offers the same features as the fancy big sibling. That is a definite plus. In most cases when a revision to something is made, sacrifices are made as well. In this case it seems the loss of linux install (big whoop). I find it nice they use a quieter power system but it stikes me as odd that they chose to stray away from the power plug type they have used for so long on other sony related products (ps1,ps2,psp,sony camcorders, etc). In fact the figure 8 shape plug reminds me of the original xbox. I could most likely use the newer xbox power plug that has the built in circuit breaker.

Overall it is nice the price is lower and it really shows. But the physical attributes arent what counts. Its the games and those are stellar.

For functionality alone it gets a 5/5 because it is the same as the original.

Asthetics...I give it a 3/5. It wont look good in my theater system which is why I am happy with my original.

Kaneda5362d ago

the review wasn't bad. He just name missing features and what's good about it. The Price!

Anon19745362d ago

Xbox 360 gets 4/5. PS3 gets 4/5. Wii gets 4/5.

So is Cnet saying all consoles are created equal?

you already know what this sh!t is. It's just FUD.

now, I'm waiting for GEC to defend this.

edit: I know. he only goes after ps fanboys though. lol

Sunny_D5363d ago

Lol, I was actually thinking the same thing. But I really don't think GEC is a fanboy.

thebudgetgamer5363d ago

but if you compare him the man of th years and shackas of our little community here. hes pretty down the middle.

GiantEnemyCrab5362d ago (Edited 5362d ago )

Well here I am.

If you call telling the truth about who owns CNET defending them then what the funk ever.

I could give 2 shats what CNET thinks of the PS3 Slim but I do find it funny how the PS3 fanboys can related anything critical of the PS3 back to MS.

Do you not see the craziness in that?

Fair enough though, yes I do defend 360 more but I do enjoy the PS3. I don't think this place is lacking in Sony cheerleaders/defenders.

I am not going out of my way to slam Sony and I've been nothing but fair to the PS3 and Sony since I bought one. Too bad the same thing can't be said about you. So maybe you should look at your own stupid ass and stop worrying about me.

Sunny_D5363d ago

Good thing, vid is embedded. No reason to give the site hits.

INehalemEXI5363d ago

100% lean mean gaming machine.

lelik5363d ago

wow no 5? honestly, cnet is f$cking useless

Arnon5363d ago

Because they didn't give it a perfect score? Rofl, is this what Sony fans say when stuff like this happens? :/

JustinSaneV25363d ago

How sad and pathetic the life of a fanboy is.

lelik5362d ago

they gave the 400 dollar version a 4, this one is the same but smaller and cheaper yet its still a 4? explain that to me. psn is better than ever and update 3.0 rapes. your a fanboy if a 4 makes sense to you in this case

Arnon5362d ago

I'm a fanboy if I think this didn't deserve a 5/5?

Still no backwards compatibility, removal of custom OS, touch-sensitive buttons replaced with actual buttons that don't match the surface they're on, still not able to use 4 USB ports correctly, no vertical stand unless purchased separately, no (well, probably) component or HDMI cables included, etc.

And you think this deserves a 5/5.... because... why?

potenquatro5362d ago

To him it desrves a 5 because it's Sony.

Shame on you for trying to make a valid point on NG.

Arnon5362d ago

Darn, I forgot..

/slaps his own logic.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies11h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken6h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6922h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker22h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6921h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt9h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken6h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1d 4h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto1d 3h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger881d 3h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies16h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
