GT5 damage shown off; limited to racing cars

GZ: Damage is in Gran Turismo 5, but as far as can be made out it's only for racing cars and not standard road models.

So we have a few new videos of Gran Turismo 5's damage modelling. The game is playable at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, which we confirmed yesterday, but Sony strangely cut the game from their conference. Perhaps they're holding back the game's release date announcement until the Tokyo Games Show.

hahaha that looks quality this game will be off the Hook

techie3771d ago

Def looks excellent. Can't believe it's going to have 1000 cars. 600 for the PSP game sounded absurd.

poindat3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

Yep, this doesn't need to be the "definitive" anything... It doesn't need to inundate us with information (although look at what happens when it does!), it doesn't need to give itself silly titles, and it doesn't even need a PR team. It speaks for itself. It's been the King and despite the haters and the impatient, it still will be when it hits stores.

It's actually over 800 cars on GT Mobile. :D

techie3771d ago

Oh. Absurd lol How many were in GT4?

poindat3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

Around 720, I believe. Though I think it may have been a bit more in PAL or some Asian countries due to exclusive cars.

Beat ya to it, Thom. :p

PirateThom3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

About 700.

Above: :(

Trollimite3771d ago

wish that there was no damage? i hate to see beautiful cars get destroyed.

StanLee3771d ago

I kind of figured. To get the licence for damage for 850 production model cars would be a task. You hear that?! 850 production model cars!!!! Double the cars in Forza 3. And that's just production model cars. Insane.

LiL T3771d ago

Auto companies see a game that truly represents their car ( looks real ) they don't want them damaged but if your cars are not a true representation (look plastic) they don't care. Ah well there is always tire flex, painting, stickers and body kits that dont do anything.

I will stick with GT5+G27 after what I have seen so far. To think I was about to buy a 360 and F3.

let the fanboy disagreeing begin....

GameGambits3771d ago

Forza 3 Developer shot himself in the foot big time with his mouthing off.

Definitive racing game this generation? Yeah I am looking at it right now with this trailer.

I don't even like racing games, but I'm going to buy Gran Turismo 5 day 1. Why? To make my HDTV have an orgasm. :)

Montrealien3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

There where almost 700 cars in GT2, that was 10 years ago. the question is, how many of those 1000 cars will be different Preludes and Civics Daiwoo compact cars for the Used market?

As for the Video, we are seeing some good GT here, however it must be said that the 360 into the wall shows that both GT and Forza still have ways to go to become true driving simulators. And the 60 tracks claim, I though we where beyond that. I am willing to bet my N4G account that they even counted mirror tracks... Talk about marketing PR.

either way, its looking like yet another amazing instalment in this great franchise.

edit: @ the Dissagrees, If you dont think it is yet another amazing instalment in the Gran Turismo series, you are on crack.

TK4213770d ago

Why don't you just shut up Montrealiean and enjoy the show?

Montrealien3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

wow, did I touch a nerve?

I will always be GT`s harshest critic, since I am one of its greatest fans, you dont like it? There is a ignore button. Now go create another account pls.

marinelife93770d ago

I don't think the name of Forza should even be mentioned in this thread. I don't hear anyone bringing up the name Test Drive Unlimited.

Montrealien3770d ago

TD:U is one bad ass racer, I still play it now and then. Speaking of playing old games, I was playing GT2 on my way to work today, damn I love that Lister Storm, what a beast. Gran Turismo Portable could not come soon enough!

green3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

In other sim racers that i have played that had damage,if you bump into someone the performance of the car will be affected. Now since GT5 does not have damage for 80% of the cars, does that mean that i can bash walls or other drivers without it affecting the performance of the car?

@ Montraliean: Thanks for the reply.

3770d ago
Montrealien3770d ago

ever since GT2, damage has afected the control of the cars, it just does not show on the car model itelf.

LazyDevs3770d ago

I'm sorry that damage system is awful. Ok so the door will fly open for no reason without being hit or damaged. And it had the exact same front bumper damage as the first video did. Maybe they should just remove the rushed damaged system.

god_o_war3771d ago

lol theres like 1 vid that shows damage and already people are speculating it isn for every car

LiquifiedArt3771d ago

Although i'd like damage for every car (as well as weather/day/night) effects, having racing car damage that's as closely simulated as possible is good enough for me. :)

rareairtone3770d ago

read this freakin story and get your head out of PD's behind

read this too it's towards the bottom, third paragraph from the bottom

Bren863771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

I'd like to think all cars have damage concidering how long this games been in development for.

LiquifiedArt3771d ago

...It has nothing to do with capability or resources. It has to do with car manufacterers being "OK" with their cars being mangled.

Also you have to remember, they aren't going to make each car have its own unique damage model. That would be ridiculous. I'd love that, but its just not realistic another problem (besides sheer resources) would be the ability to see the defects in each car companies cars. Seeing ferrari's being "cut in half", but not a nissan sentra wouldn't look very good for the folks at ferrari. Remeber they all do different collision testing. You'd expect a Sentra to have better crash-test ratings then say a Lambo. Just because your more likely going to have a death in a Sentra then Lambo. Seeing as how 99.9% of the population can't afford a Lambo.

So What happens is you get PolyDigital making a template collision model for cars. Maybe one for Trucks, SUVs, Sedans, Coupes etc... Then they apply it across all teh cars in each class. You could therefore have a great collision architecture in your car, but be forced to share a lesser one with another car company. Ofcourse this works in the opposite manner as well.

It makes sense, but i'd want all unique damage anyway! lol.

sarcasmic3771d ago

That's why it's limited to racing cars and especially in rally. Crazy damage is pretty much two peas in a pot with rally cars.

Gish3771d ago

I think you mean two peas in a POD. But I agree with your statement.

Bren863770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Seems stupid to me. I mean c'mon what car game hasn't had damage? its such a standard feature you don't even think about it. The same cars in other games get damage but not in GT, seems a bit pathetic, they might as well left it out completely.

Godmars2903771d ago

Or is it only your car that shows damage? Nothing seems to happen to the AI cars even though they, at least in one instance, run into you.

techie3771d ago

The Lancer is a road car, not a racing car. I'm sure N4G users don't know how to read.

housegroove763771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

its not just you. The Evo that smacks the a$$ of the guy playing doesnt have any dammage on it. Still though, its awesome they worked in damage. I wasn't crying for it, but its a bonus its there.

Montrealien3770d ago

then why do you even bother submitting Deep?

Godmars2903770d ago

Meh, silly me. It being in a race I thought it was a race car.

The only real difference I can see between them is that one has race decals and one doesn't.

evrfighter3770d ago

I can go find a 1990 toyota tercel and go race people on the road. But it still won't make it a race car...

Omega43771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

This is probably the reason Turn 10 decided to go with less cars cause they wanted to unsure EVERY car had damage and was as realistic as each other.

Quality better than quantity eh :)

Galvanise3771d ago

Some manufacturers do not allow damage on their cars. So Polyphony have probably decided that all road cars won't have damage.

sarcasmic3771d ago

Yup, and the reason why Turn 10 decided that there shouldn't be weather or night racing was because they wanted bright sunlight to show the details of the damage.

tda-danny3771d ago

is that forza 3 in no way has more quality than gt5

ultimolu3771d ago

...You're very annoying.

Rock Bottom3771d ago

300 cars with THAT graphic and arcady controls? Pretty sure Turn 10 went after quantity over quality.

After all, they added in-car view and sacrificed 60 fps for 30 frame while using that view, and you dare to talk about quality. :p

Syronicus3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

But really, if you don't like the sony trolls hitting you up in your Xbox 360 threads, try not trolling the PS3 game threads.

leeger3771d ago

Don't worry GT5 will deliver quality and quantity.

Omega43771d ago

I can understand some of you guys are extremely disappointed since damage was like one of the only features GT needed to become the true racing simulator and it was one of the main reasons why GT5:P scored so averagely.

It will certainly be interesting to see the scores of GT5 and Forza 3 because of this new found limitation, they may have actually been better off not having damage at all, can you imagine being in a race where your car gets damaged and your mate doesnt you would certainly lose some immersion.

ultimolu3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

Why can't you people enjoy good PS3 news for once? Why must you keep doing this? What do you have against the PS3? Every five minutes, you're here ruining a PS3 articles with your nonsense. It's very annoying, and when I mean very, I mean VERY.

The mods should have banned you from here ages ago.

I swear...*shakes head*

techie3771d ago

Forza 3 drops to 30fps when you go incar? So when you flick between views it swaps from 60fps to 30fps? That can't be true. Sounds pretty sh*te...

leeger3771d ago

this is the immersion you'll get from GT5

and this is what you will get from Forza 3

Baka-akaB3771d ago (Edited 3771d ago )

dissapointed ? Most people seems quite happy here .
The actual definitive driving simulation (on console) gets realistic damage for a still wide array of cars .

Maybe the full on arcade damage over at forza will scare away it's actual , true and proper competition , Need for Speed Shift , or maybe at most GT psp ... but that's pretty much it .

Syronicus3771d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

Not at all. I prefer to play with 11 other people online in a single race having chosen from 1000 cars on a track selected from one of over 60 available at launch... Nope, no disappointment here.

Track your head with the PSEye!? I thought that was something Natal was bring to the table that nobody has ever done before! (/sarcasm)

Omega43771d ago

@ ultimolu

Why? Your actually asking why!?

Why dont you go to every Forza related article and tell me if GT isnt mentioned at all, then and only then will i even care in the slightest what you are saying

On a side note its interesting that you find limited car damage "good PS3 news" i can only imagine what you consider bad news

Major_Tom3770d ago

Omega4 who are you kidding, atleast GT5 is a full game with Weather and Rally Racing, unlike Forza.

Now GT5 includes damage and the visuals can't be beaten.

Pizzagaki3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

I agree with you Omega, i played both the GT and FM series, and FM is just way more entertaining, it may have a slight less edge then GT5 in gfx, but it just owns in the gameplay department.

Screw these haters, they probably like are the kind that eat pizza margarita, instead of a real mans pizza.

Besides, FM will have 400 cars with a damage model, and GT5 only a 170, so much for realism.

Usually i say Gameplay over gfx, but in case of FM3, it got both gfx and awesome gameplay.
Keep your driving simulator, this october i will play a racing simulator!

twoface3770d ago

Hey hey, what are you saying?

Forza is definitive. Forza has all these great things like customizable cars, video production function, full damage modeling, dynamic switching fps in and out of cars.
And it doesn't suffer from bad weather!

I'll still get GT5 though

Rhythmattic3770d ago

I've not checked your history.. Am I maybe/not seeing the same thing...

But After seeing that in car GT5 "Cam" Vid, and Direct F3 feed (in car 8.10) you just cant compare..

GT has more than just an edge.... Un... Bloody... believable ....

However, 360 owner's, you cannot, without a doubt, not buy F3... its definitely the best "Definitive Racer" on the Platform..

It just aint GT5.

twoface3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

I agree with you Omega.

Can't stand ppl who make it a point in their life to put down "opposing" system games. It's like a daily prayer thing to them.

Talking about prayers, I try to practice what I preach

ultimolu3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

No Omega, I don't go to Forza sections because it seems to me that they'll both be good.

The Wood3770d ago (Edited 3770d ago )

wheres your have none. More cars, Weather effects, Night races.. cumon man Forza has la mans but i swear its a 24 hour race. Have Turn 10 moved the le mans to alaska?? The reason people mention GT all the time is because its still the king of driving sims says the Industry. If the peeps from T10 weren't so vocal in their BS self hype people wouldn't be as vocal about their game and the things its lacking....When you say definitive you'd better have the clout to back it and then some

Ju3770d ago

Everybody is talking about damage, anybody every read this:

"the movement of C0ckpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)"

You get headtracking the first time ever in a high profile AAA title. Cool thing, cooler then damage, IMO. Now you can duck down to look under your mirror.

Unicron3770d ago

Hypocrite4 trolling the PS3 threads as usual, then complaining when the PS3 fanboys do the same.

beardpapa3770d ago

So I'm looking at your youtube link of the Forza 3 stage demo, and Dan says they were talking with the motor companies and working together to allow them to simulate rollover. I'm assuming this means they got the OK with other companies to allow damage to their vehicles.

Anyone got proof that Turn 10 signed a deal or got the OK from companies to allow vehicular damage? From what they're saying, it just seems to me like every other developer that's creating a "racing" game needs an OK.
