CryEngine 3, 360 vs PS3

"Kotaku says: Here's some rough, shaky footage of Crytek's CryEngune 3 running on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 at the same time. PS3 is on the left, Xbox 360 on the right. Can you spot the difference? No, me neither."

the movement seems a bit slow.. wonder how fast the game plays ..

Darkeyes5790d ago

Looks awesome IMO. Instead of doing such BS PS3 vs 360 articles, maybe people should applaud Crytek for accomplishing this incredible feat. That real time demonstration was nothing short of awesome.

Most dev complain that PS3 is hard to program... Well, so now just program the fking game on the PC and the engine will do the rest lazy bones (listening Valve?). The main advantage that one can see here is the amount of time saved... Boy, making 3 parallel things at a time means a hell lot of time left for polishing... Just imagine if a console version inferior, then one can invest the time and polish the game and then proceed rather than rushing to save time.

I really hope the devs ditch the UE3... CE3 looks better and seems easier to develop. PS3 gamers should especially be happy with this cause frankly lets admit that UE3 and PS3 haven't had a good relation... CE3 is the future... Looking forward to Crysis 2.

FamilyGuy5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

The detail looks AWESOME. Does this game have a release window, they really should upload some HD videos if they've got it running on consoles already.

"Well, so now just program the fking game on the PC and the engine will do the rest lazy bones"

If it truely is as simple as they claim, say hello to the new Unreal engine 3. They've made their money and had their time in the spotlight, it's someone else's turn now.

I love that they claim it to be so simple "push a button and the engine does the rest" I believe the claim was. This means 3rd (mostly 3rd party right?) party games will be produced MUCH faster. I'm very happy about this.

morganfell5790d ago

^^^Are you saying they are using shadows/darkness to hide the lack of detail?

FamilyGuy5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

I meant the detail of the forest looking area once the get outside. It looks like there's a lot of detail (foliage). Plus there's shadows from the tree leaves above.

solidt125790d ago

Man that water look incredible when the bullets hit it.

KRUSSIDULL5790d ago

Both look great just some difference in color/darkness also found the draw distance extremly bad just look at the fog in the end of the tunnel.

Strikepackage Bravo5790d ago

Darker monitor? Not likely, why would they set up a side by side and not take the monitors into account. The monitors were most likely identical in every way and setting, the PS3 version is just washed out as the PS3 version is in most multiplaform games. Does 1up think we are all stupid? Well never, mind most of you bought that garbage so maybe they're right in thinking that.

DaTruth5790d ago

Check out Nasim and his fanboy propaganda in the comment section of the site. they need a bubble system!

Time_Is_On_My_Side5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

"if the PS3 is so much more powerful why doesn't this look better on PS3? Why should i pay MORE for a PS3 to get the same perfomance as the 360? Stuff like this proves the Cell is a joke, and the consumer is the butt of the joke."

- Mr Marbles

Simple, multiplatform games are supposed to be identical; it's exclusives that show off hardware. The whole point of developing multiplatform games is to have everything identical, making similar hardware meet in the middle. You defeat the whole purpose of the developers' work - not to discriminate their audience - , look at *exclusives* for better hardware equalling better games.

All-35790d ago

There's a big difference between the contrast levels... I don't know how anyone could overlook the obvious.

DaTruth5790d ago

Why am I discussing the fanboys on the other site, when there are plenty of stupid fanboys in the above comments.

"1up has been taken over by fanboys!" Well why don't you head over there where you belong???

Mr Marbles5790d ago

In previous generations the superior console got the superior looking version of the multiplatform game. Games on PS2 and xbox almost always looked better on xbox. It is only this gen that PS3 fanboys demand that multiplats look at least identical to the 360 version. In prior generations if one looked better than the other we all just knew that one console was superior, only now that many of you are in denial and want to believe the Sony marketing dribble about the power of the cell, do we expect multiplats to look the same.

By making multiplats look the same developers are downgrading 360 versions of games so PS3 can handle the code.

Strikepackage Bravo5790d ago

for pointing out the obvious truth? Do you have a rebuttal to my comment or are you admitting I'm right and just calling me names because of it? Sorry, but sometimes the truth hurts.

lowcarb5790d ago

Some one plays is just in denial as usual. All this shows is if any exclusive game on PS3 were done on 360 it would look better on 360. Ever wonder why a PS3 exclusive that gets ported to 360 look better on on it and any 360 exclusive going to PS3 looks worst? It's all fud and excuses because they can't handle the truth with there own two eyes.

5790d ago
Guitardr855790d ago

...Because PS3 exclusives look better...If you're buying a console for multiplat games then you are retarded, most games now have only subtle differences between games. the only ones who argue over the differences are people that want to stir up sh!t. Hell, I have orange box for the PS3 and I have to say it's not bad at all; if people hadn't complained about how bad it was compared to the 360 version, I wouldnt even had noticed anything at all...hell, I really can't anyway!!!

raptorjacob5790d ago

you guys are the only ones claiming one console far superior because it is darker. have fun playing the darkened version.

they need to lighten the 360 up a tad and darken the ps3 a smidge

DeadlyFire5790d ago

Looks great so far for consoles. Awesome to see the optimized edition of CryEngine 2 coming along so nicely. Looks like Crysis 2 Alpha test or something though. Environment looks like it could be. Still about another year to go for development. Can't wait to play it.

Can't wait for the DirectX 11 clips for Crysis 2 on PC. Not one person listed DirectX 11 for Crysis 2 on this page. Shame on you people. DirectX 11 games begin December 2009. Anything in 2010 to launch is 90% likely to incorporate it. It might be reason why some games got shifted from 2009 to 2010.

Strikepackage Bravo5790d ago

@guitard, why pay more for a console that has inferior or equal performance at best, MOST games are multiplatform, a better argument would be that you're an idiot for buying a console just for the few exclusives, in this case since PS3 has so few things it does better than 360, the few exclusives your paying more money for just aren't worth it. If pay over 200 bucks on a console I want the best performance I can get.

@Marbles, all very good points

@Da truth, still no rebuttal?

Arthur_5790d ago

...i'll stick to the PC. lol.

But it did look nice for both consoles.

nveenio5790d ago

Obviously the lighting is different, but only when it comes to contrast levels. The difference between the 360 and PS3 can be matched if you adjust your TV a little on the PS3 side. My TV adjusts contrast automatically, so I've never had any PS3 games look washed out. For the purpose of side-by-side, though, I can see why they wouldn't want the TV doing anything extra.

lowcarb5790d ago

lol...damage control at it's best.Did you ever think that maybe your just use to the washed out look and now you can't even tell the difference? I'm willing to bet you anything that if you take off those goggles you will see things different.

emitsiti5790d ago

.

Good to see both consoles runnig the engine well.

potenquatro5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

I always new they could run propperly on consoles. Consoles can upscale and low res gives them a lot of room. Cards of their same gen can run this game on low res aswell.

Crytek are pc devs, so xbox is familiar. But either the Cell is a bunch of bs, or this is another example of very good devs unable or unwilling to exploit the storied cpu.

Btw. In every gen. The better hardware has had the better version of a game. This would be the first time people claim difrent and I don't buy it. This is just another video card stress test. Score one for ATI. I guess the days of customized everything on consoles are over. Either that or we need more companies to step their game up. I remember Motorola and Yamaha made processors for consoles. I't like the Wallmarts of the industry Sony, MS killed small business. That would explain Nintendo going niche.

PS. the real winner here is IBM and ATI. IBM is on all three, and ATI is on Wii and the 360 the two most sold consoles. ATI is also on a lot of PCs. We nedd more people making gpu

Time_Is_On_My_Side5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

Last generation it would run slightly better. This generation developers don't try to meet in the middle because of the fanatics, they do it because it's the same game. A developer would be called on *favouritism* if the same game on *similar hardware ran completely different*.

This rule kind of changes with *different titles*, just look at Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 both the same games with different titles and one having a little more extra features. It was the same last generation, for example GTA: Vice City on the XBOX looked the same as GTA: Vice City on PS2, but the only difference was that it ran better on XBOX. This means that less loading, sharper edges, but in the end *it wasn`t a leap or a different game because of hardware specifications*. The *same difference* can be seen with Microsoft’s operating system “Vista”, it runs better on Mac computers, but it’s still the same old operating system “Vista.” To really see *a leap* you would have to still go with *exclusives* bottom line, it’s when people try to find a difference that leads to what hardware is better when in reality it doesn’t determine nothing, but satisfy their superiority complex.

Just ask yourself, why wasn`t the computer claimed as the best version, and everything is always directed to PS and XBOX Why do journalist seem to make stupid comments to instigate an argument on their website These are questions my friend you should ask yourself, why, if it`s the same damn game

MGSR THE HD VERSION5790d ago

hmmmm, and people said 360 couldn't handel such graphics, yeah right.

DaTruth5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

Because you're the ones who degraded the conversation to a console war. If you call them fanboys, then do the exact same thing here, somehow that makes you better? It makes you a fanboy of equal or greater value!

There was no rebuttal for so long because I was playing 4 hours of MGS4; You know, actually gaming, not examining sales or fighting a console war.

And the best looking game last gen was GOW2 which was a PS2 exclusive! Last gen everyone knew the XBOX had greater power and nobody was denying it; It is only this gen when every single developer says the PS3 is the more powerful console, yet the fanboys this gen say differently!

Seriously though, how are you guys such huge fanboys that no matter how many performance studies put the Cell B.E. on top of every other processor, you bunch of nobodies feel you can dispute that? These guys are actually running tests, comparisons and studies, not just preferring consoles and justifying purchases!

ThanatosDMC5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

Where the eF is my Wii version?!

Whoa, why's the 360 version so dark in the hallway? What happened to all the lights on the floor and on the sides of the hallway???

indysurfn5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

Yeah it looks great on consoles. The thing is so did the unreal engine. But the unreal engine performs better on a high end pc, and then a xbox360, and then a Ps3.

Likewise the cryengine is being sold to developers, and publishers of the PC, and of the xbox360, and of the ps3. So obviously they are not going to push the demo to the point that the ps3 is only doing 20 frames per second while the xbox360 is still doing 60 frames per second. Nor will they put the highest quality textures in a large open area that the ps3 does not have the memory for, seeing it is only able to use 256meg to xbox360's max of 512meg. As people use this and the newer unreal engines people will see a larger lead on multi plates from the xbox360.
This will teach Sony that the next time they come out late to come out with more memory and put more than one real cpu in the machine. I don't expect Sony to allow Microsoft come out a whole year ahead with the PS4. I expect them to be first like they where with the ps2 (18 months early). I expect them to catch Microsoft with there pants down! And put the gauntlet down next generation, and not tell us to pay beyond, based on brand loyalty.

Gamertags5790d ago

but that isn't a very good comparison. There was a reflection on the 360 tv that blocked parts of the gameplay. The PS3 was very washed out and the shadows were barely visible.

Also the 360 version had mussel fire the PS3 didn't. Why was that? Did it have a silencer equiped?

ElementX5790d ago

Well, you can't see much detail from that distance... also the PS3 looks lighter.

UnDone145790d ago

I think RGB must have been off on the PS3 version. Still looks very good for a multiplatform game engine.

Highwayman5790d ago

Yes, the PS3 does appear to be lighter, while the 360 appears to be alomost too dark. I wonder if it's because of the off screen filming?
Anyways. The game looks very good.

beavis4play5790d ago

but 360 version looked too dark.............where's "goldilocks" to find the version that's juuuuuuuust right? lol.

FamilyGuy5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

My sentiment EXACTLY

LOL @ Goldilocks reference.

@ below Thanks for that, I rarely read an article when a video is posted here. I would still prefer to see it first hand but even if they were different it still means games will be produced much faster which is a win all around.

Darkeyes5790d ago

Read the article guys...

"Even up close there wasn't any discernible difference (though the 360 monitor was darker)"

Yup, both look awesome. The darkness is nothing that can't be handled via tweaking a few brightness settings and starting RGB on PS3...

Boy hope this is the end of UE3.

Freeze9525790d ago

You probably already know that if your looking for the best graphics buy the PC version, supplied the €1000 PC ;).

Personally I prefer PC gaming, but console versions are developing very well, to make both this close to identical is extraordinary, Trust Crytek to do such a thing.

I still prefer UE3, I think it's a better engine, I just think Crytek know how to develop a good looking game.

Kleptic5790d ago

Gametrailers finally did a good article a few months ago on the differences between the 360 and PS3 rendering wise...and stated that at 'normal' settings of televisions, the PS3 would appear brighter and 'warmer' where the 360 would appear darker and 'colder'...as in the PS3 had shades of red throughout, and the 360 had shades of blue...the most obvious comparison has always been GTAIV...where its very noticeable...

they did state that these differences were independent of RGB and full white settings ont the PS3...the 360 doesn't have these options, as it doesn't have full HDMI 1.3x support in the first place...where as the PS3 does for uncompressed LPCM sound decoding over HDMI...as well as x.v. color depth, and 'deep color' options for 10 bit displays...all these HDMI options are mostly needed for Blu Ray, and not needed for gaming...so its not really a big deal that the 360 doesn't have it, as it isn't capable of these sound feilds or video signal strength anyway...it does not have an HD media drive...

however GT did state that all these differences could be removed by adjusting the televisions for each system accordingly...it was just the two systems on the same television set at default settings will have those differences...thats all...this is the main reason that both 360 and PS3 owners usually say 'it doesn't look like that on my TV'...because you have mostly adjusted your set for your room, and overall gained a much better picture because of it...I know personally I have never played one PS3 game on my 46" bravia that looked as washed out as it does in comparison videos...nor have a played a 360 game on it that is almost unwatchably dark...

Looks amazing on both consoles with the 360 counterpart being slightly darker in the hall ways. Can't wait to destroy this game.

greenlightgamer5790d ago

The shadow textures on the 360 do look slightly better.

S-T-F-U5790d ago

And you can tell that from that video? You have really good eyes.

thereapersson5790d ago

how in the hell can you tell from that crap off-screen video?

devilhunterx5790d ago

yea its cause he got fanboy vision. 100/100.

greenlightgamer5790d ago

sorry i just meant the shadows look better and you can tell because if you look in the hall-way part and the forest area the shadows on the 360 do look better, the PS3 looks allot lighter.

MK24ever5790d ago

Shadow textures??? SHADOW TEXTURES???!!!! Freaking shadows ARE shadows, they DON'T have textures for god sake!!

Microsoft Xbox 3605790d ago

I'm not surprised. A 360 fanboy first to spot a difference between the two consoles from a crappy video. Typical.

Highwayman5790d ago

I spotted a slight difference. In some areas the PS3 looked better and in some areas the 360 appeared to look better. Though I'm not really passing judgement as it is a crappy off screen video.

thereapersson5790d ago

LOL, look at how many disagrees I recieved for pointing out an obvious fact. Looks like the disagree-slamming fanboys are out in force today

Kurt Russell5790d ago

(4.5 - :S
Shadow textures??? SHADOW TEXTURES???!!!! Freaking shadows ARE shadows, they DON'T have textures for god sake!!)

Shadows aren't always shadows. They can be either baked or dynamic. In this instance they're dynamic - But not always ~(mirrors edge for example).

You can have that one for free.

LONEWOLF2315790d ago

They both look really good BUT did anyone notice the background mountain?? Its as if they stole parts of it on the 360 version........i dont know it just looks smaller to me. And well on the PS3 version it looks taller and there seems to be more foliage DANG YOU dvd disk, thanks to you the 360 version has a dwarf bald mountain! In the end they both look nice!

DaTruth5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

Draw distances are better on the PS3 version! You can't fix that with settings, unlike the contrast. The PS3 version probably has real-time ray tracing, so the light from outdoors isn't localized in a single section like the 360 version, giving the hallway the appearance of looking brighter in the PS3 version because the light is flowing in and bouncing throughout!

They will probably fix that in the final production by just bringing down the contrast of the whole game(PS3 version)!

ChickeyCantor5790d ago

C'mon sony fans, the video clearly shows the difference in lightning between the two games, especially in the beginning when the player walks in that corridor.

anyway, whatever, I think comparing them is pointless anyway.

siyrobbo5790d ago

i kinda hope not, a lack of real competition led to a lot of lacklustre unreal engine 3 games that all looked the same, i hope that with updated unreal engine 3, this engine and id tech 5 (also isnt sony liscencing killzone 2 engine as well?) we will see some damned fantastic looking games coming out as each company trys to trump each other.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.
