Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed is PS3 Exclusive

Gamer.no, who contacted Ubisoft yesterday about the recent rumors reports that Assassin's Creed is still a PS3 exlusive. Talking to the Norwegian game site Product Manager of Ubisoft Nordic Harald Horsberg says that the game is announced exclusively for the PS3 after he had been in contact with the French HQ.

PR Manager Fredrik Moberg adds “there are no indications that this game is headed for other formats besides the PS3”

Another report is also coming from the official Ubisoft forums. A Community Manager from Ubisoft under the name of 'UbiRazz posted this statement.

"Ubisoft have confirmed no such thing. Assassin's Creed will come on PlayStation 3 and at this time, no other platform has been confirmed." said UbiRazz.

This of course won’t kill the rumors for good, as people will still argue that a 360 version could become available somewhere down the line, maybe 6-12 months after the PS3 version, but at the moment the official word from Ubisoft is that Assassin's Creed is a PS3 exclusive.

Official july 4th, 2006 ubisoft announced that assassin's creed is also being released for the XBOX 360 and the PC.
I was right. Also, just a note it's still "not" going to be released for the ps3 unless sony works it's bugs out in time. It just cant handle this game nor mgs4.

Oh come on. This is the third time I've heard about confirmination and de-confirmation.

This is Ubisoft we're talking about. Lately they've been following EA's tactics on releasing every game they produce to every console. I couldn't find the link for it, but the 360 version is already well into the development stages (don't know about the Wii/PC). This thing is like a merry-go-round. Why can't they just confirm it already? Most everybody knows it's coming out for the Xbox 360. There's no way this game is going to be a PS3 exclusive. Ubisoft KNOWS that if they wouldn't bring this game to the 360, they'd be losing a good amount of profits from it.

We just have to wait and see what happens. However I believe that come the Tokyo Game Show we will know exactly what Ubisoft intend to do with this title. Many developers are closing the doors to the ps3 since it's more so a "plauge station 3" instead. Ya cant have a game released on a bottlenecking system ya just cant and that's what the current yes current july 2006 playstation is.
So it's quite easy to say what's going to happen, really the ps3 is crap so far, nothing since march has been released on it to be demo'd that isnt played on either a PC or XBOX 360 or just a CG on a PC. March's MGS4 fiasco was the last time anything has actually played real time on a so called ps3. Listen at this point with everything I have seen there really is no rumor to this. Assassins Creed is not EVER going to be a console exclusive. No Ubisoft published game has ever been a console exclusive. Even the Over G Fighter game does not say "Only for XBOX" on it.
There is no fight or rumor about this , I think it is safe to say this game is a timed exclusive for PS3 and that is ALL! There is no way a 3rd party title of this production value from a company that is fending off hostile takeover issues will be an exclusive. Major gaming sites ( including this one )and publications all have "confirmed" statements that it will be mult. platform. We should stop arguing about it and doubting it. At this point I am going into wait and see mode with a comfortable feeling this game is coming to the 360 and PC.

It's important to understand that it is about over for the Playstation brand as far as industry dominance goes. Thst is a different animal all together. Gears of War is an ANNOUNCED 360 exclusive. Assassins creed has not been officially announced as a PS3 exclusive yet. I doubt it ever will. The game industry shows that are upcoming will be the test. If they announce this game as an exclusive then there you have it , if they don't and say things like "confirmed for initial release on PS3" then you can be sure it is multi platform.

The only thing this article does, is confirming that Ubisoft hasn't announced AC for PC/360 yet.

It says nothing about if it is a definite exclusive or not. So let's say it like this:

1. If it was an exclusive, Ubisoft would have said: "This is a PS exclusive, we won't bring it to PC/360 PERIOD.".

But they don't. They say only PS is announced other formats no comment. IF it was a real exclusive and Sony paid them enough they would say it.

2. So taking point one as a starting point, Sony probably paid enough for a timed exclusive for say 3 or 6 months after it's launch. Also they had the agreement of not saying anything in public about the TIMED exclusive. That's why they say the PS version is the only one ANNOUNCED

3. It could also be MS who has asked Ubisoft to tell nothing about the 360 version. And then suddenly @ X06 they pull this trick out of their pockets. That can be a nice hit in the face of Sony

Ms would probably get it 1 year or 2 after it came out for the PS3. Also they are not going to lose money profit at all they are actually going to get lots and lots of profit for it. So with ubisofts history and coupled with the fact that many claim they saw it at E32006 running on 360 hardware...we were ONLY saying that it most likely will be announced at some point for the xbox 360. If you read this article its from a Sony supporter not a neutral source of news. With that said, what the article says is that its ONLY been confirmed for the ps3. From the copious amount of reports we've been reading from many biased media sources, about the PS3's inherent graphical superiority to any other platform, we could extrapolate, quite ineffectively I might add, that the new PS3 GPU, codenamed the RSX and designed by nVidia, would be a 7800 derivative. As most of you PC savvy gamers know, the 7800 is one of nVidia's current high-powered chipset lines, possessing a high gpu clockspeed, lots of chipset RAM and deep/fast pipes with good I/O speed. A 7800-derivative RSX would almost assuredly gaurantee that the PS3 would blow the doors off any platform, save for the PC, and even then, only gaming-focused machines with high specifications could crush such a system. I believe that Sony knew this and that nVidia was eager to land a "winning platform" after the business relationship debacle between themselves and Microsoft in the Xbox' first iteration.

That point made, I have repeatedly stated that Sony was indeed using a modified 7600 series card, within the PS3 and that the RSX couldn't realistically be a 7800 series card for a variety of reasons. To revisit these reasons and maintain their currency, the first would be that the 7800 is significantly more expensive to produce. While a 7600 GT can be had for anywhere between 150-200 dollars(US), the 7800 GT, even know, has a retail price for twice that. The 7800 GT is simply unrealistically expensive and prohibitively costly for a console, even one as "luxurious" as the PS3. By looking at nVidia's financial statements, you can note that nVidia makes approximately 20-30% with their graphics chipset, from retail to intermediaries, like eVGA and other graphics card brokers. This profit margin includes all hidden/sunk costs as well as CoGS that may apply to the manufacture of the card.

Therefore, a 300 dollar(US), bargain 7800 GT graphics chipset, will likely be sold to an intermediary, for no less than 200-225 dollars(US). I can understand and accept the economies of scale, as well as the financial and operational pull that Sony can bring to the exchange and how such influence could encourage nVidia to offer such graphics chipsets for even cheaper pricing. I can also understand that without onboard chipset RAM, the card's cost would diminish at Sony's manufacturing factories. However, keep in mind that the RSX has a greater amount of onboard cache than a regular 7800 series card(which again adds to the price). Even if Sony could coerce nVidia and its factories to cost a chipset of this nature for fifty dollars less(and that we use the full 30% margin that nVidia had applied, regardless of a potentially lower margin for this card), we see that the card wouldn't cost Sony less than 175 dollars(US).

Such a component, equaling a third of the PS3 makes little sense. With the Cell easily costing Sony more than a hundred dollars, the Blu-Ray drive easily shattering a hundred also, and probably twice that, it becomes clearly evident that a graphics chipset of the 7800 series' magnitude would be far to uneconomical for the PS3 and would cause Sony to lose hundreds of dollars(US) per console. Disassembling the PS3, we see that the PS3 would be using a Cell (approximately 150 dollars(US) http://www.theinquirer.net/... a Blu-Ray drive(approximately 105 dollars(US) http://www.theinquirer.net/... the 7800 series RSX(175 dollars(US), the specialized RAM-512 MB(100 USD--notice that DDR2 can be had for less but the PS3 isn't using traditional DDR2...), the motherboard/wireless components/psu(55 USD Merill Lynch Revised), the HD(80 USD...normally can be had for cheaper except that the PS3 can't use a regular PC form factor HD due to its small size...a laptop HD is likely...), case/cooling/assembly/packagin g/shipping(60 USD Gartner Revised), included peripherals/sunk costs(15 USD). The operation software accrual and installation of the Linux variant(15 USD)Total? 755 dollars USD.

Now before we continue, notice that while the cost breakdown above is an estimation and has a area of error that can be as high as 50 USD. That said, the costs were all posted conservatively. Margins for nVidia were chosen as high as possible and the minimum parts costs listed from those sources were taken, despite many articles listing that the parts could actually be costing much higher. Also note that many of the components were bundled and we are unaware of additional sunk costs and other components that could be expensive. Also note that even with these conservative amounts, the PS3 is in the red by about 150+ USD. That means that if Sony succeeds at selling 6 million copies, this year and next, it will have incurred an approximately 1 billion dollar loss. And let's remember, that these conservative estimates could easily be several hundred million too low. Doing the math, the presence of a 7600 GT, instead of a 7800 GT, would cost Sony about 100 dollars(US) per computer, saving them almost 3/4 of a billion dollars. Sure, Sony would be still in the red, but would only be over, realistically by between a quarter of a billion to half a billion dollars. A far more manageable sum.

Because it has more memory, more cache and a higher clocked gpu, the 7800 gpu chipset also requires better cooling, a larger fan, better case size and airflow, as well as a higher power draw. All of these requirements are a problem inside the PS3 and require for additional costs and allowances that the much physically smaller, cooler and more efficient 7600 GT wouldn't need. Keep in mind that the power supply needed to run the advanced RAM/Cell/RSX and HD, if the RSX were a 7800 series would be a high-range PSU and would increase the cost and would be highly unlikely to fit inside the console case, which Sony has confirmed was the design layout of the PS3.

Looking at this article, we see that nVidia hasn't been able to meet yields with the RSX. Moreover, the RSX was estimated to have gpu clockspeeds of 600 MHz, with memory clockspeeds of 700 MHz. However, the RSX is currently operating at 420 MHz for gpu and 550 MHz for the memory. Looking strictly at new 7800 GT releases, we notice that the clockspeeds for those cards are nearing 450 MHz. While some original 7800 series cards started at 400/430 MHz, the cards' clock rate quickly climbed up, but obviously, the 7800 series gpu isn't operating at a clock speed even close to 600 MHz. What would compel nVidia to believe that they could grab a proven graphics chipset, raise the core clock of the gpu by over 100 MHz(more than the leap between 6000-7000 series cards) and keep the heat to reasonable levels inside a SMALLER form factor, with the PS3 case? The indication is that Sony and nVidia didn't think they COULD do it, so they changed the playing field in their favor.

Looking strictly at the 7600 GT, the core clock rate is 550 MHz, much closer to the RSX theoretical clock maximum(550vs600) and, unlike the 7800 GT/GTX' monstrously highly clocked memory, which operates at 1-1.2 GHz, the RSX memory was capped at a comparatively paltry 700 MHz(almost half). That seems odd until you look at the 7600 GT's core memory clock. 700 MHz. Thusly, not only does the core gpu clock of the RSX match the intended clock of the 7600 GT but the memory clock matches perfectly also. Up to now, however, there have been discrepancies with the I/O speed. Most notably, statements that the RSX would have theoretical maximum throughput of 35 GB/s through its modified SB-like Flex I/O system. However, this is highly unlikely and, like the 7800 GTX, which touted even higher throughput speeds(almost 50 GB/s), we can expect the speed to be slower. This however begs the question. With 256 MB versions of the 7600 GT showing 24-28 GB/s throughput, and the RSX operating a likely 10-20% slower than its theoretical maximum, we can expect the RSX to miss the 7800 GT's 30 GB/s, especially since memory and gpu clock have fallen and the card is operating 10-20% slower and fall to a hovering 28 GB/s(about the same as a 7600 GT). About the only inconsistency with the assertion that the 7600 GT and the RSX sharing similar technology is the number of texture pipes, with the 7600 GT having about 12 less pipes than the RSX, from initial reports. The 7600 GT however has 12 pixel pipelines x 1. What we don't know however, is how the op units are distributed to the 24 pipelines of the RSX and, while, unlikely, it is possible that the execution units would be allocated in a way that causes to the pipelines to be highly diminished.

Ok, so finally, with all that out of the way, what can we expect from the RSX? A 350 dollar graphics card? Unlikely. Common sense tells us differently. While the RSX shares ONE specification with the 7800 GT, it shares several other specifications with the considerably less powerful 7600 GT. Best case scenario for the PS3 is that the the highly cache-compensated RSX is a twisted misfit hybrid of the 7600 GT and the 7800 GT... a Tiny Tim like 7700 GT(LOL). Worst case scenario is that it's a heavily modified 7600 GT, which in turn is derived from the 7800 GT. While it wouldn't be a bold faced lie to call the RSX a 7800 series derivative, because of its ties to the 7600 series and its number of pixel pipes, it isn't entirely accurate or honest. But hey, coming from Sony, what else is new?

The sad part of course is that the 7600 GT isn't a poor graphics chipset. It's comparable to what the Xbox 360 has in the Xenos 1600 XT derivative. And of course, it makes common sense that two competitive organizations would have similar products, rather than Sony magically finding a way to insert state of the art graphics systems into a console that financially, physically and sensically can't support them.

I think that Sony knew that the 7600 GT wouldn't make such a big splash. Not because the card couldn't be exercised to produce amazing graphics(console software is more efficient...look at what Sony did with the pathetic hardware of the PS2...the 7600 GT is a dozen times better) but because the 7800 GT sounds better. It makes the concept of the PS3, "as powerful as a PC" not only supported but palatable and makes potential PC gamers tempted and non-PC savvy gamers bite the bait, hook, line and sinker. Now that the release is close, Sony simply, quietly releases nVidia's "difficulties" with the card yields, which show a graphics system that looks less superhuman. The card now matches up almost exactly with the 7600 GT, which is competent but not quite the miracle Sony had promised. Most fans won't hear, or understand the difference and those that do, won't stop to think about the variations a few, scant months before release.

And so, Sony and nVidia release a comparably unextrodinary gpu subsystem, no better really than Xenos by any substantial margin, but they still keep the mindshare and reputation for being a graphical supercomputer, that had been hyped to the Heavens up to this point. A clever plan and one that I think Sony planned all along.

And let me tell you why. I agree that I could careless which is more powerful 360 vs. PS3 anyone could agrue this point everyday allday and never come to a conclusion... Well, I must say there are some good games out there for the Xbox 360. Say, Oblivion, that game is hecka fun, and there is over 200 hours of game play.....there is also Ghost Recon and such. But another point is, with these next Gen gaming systems, both the xbox 360 and ps3, the games are taking alot more time and money to put together. I think we'd all rather wait for a game where all the little details are polished and ready to go, rather than them rushing, putting together a rough draft and sending it out partialy finished. In the end, the wait will probably be all the more worth it. And if you don't have the patience, i don't blaim you, it is always nice to have more than one cool, new, fun game at a time...but, it is just a simple fact that we are going to have to be patient, no matter what we do, but at least we eventually get our games eh ? :)

Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed goes unconfirmed
Ubisoft community manager UbiRazz denies Xbox 360 and PC versions of Assassin's Creed. Neither have been confirmed by Ubisoft.

We at GameSHOUT held off on posting the news about Assassin's Creed, as our sources at Ubisoft raised their eyebrows when asked if it was for the Microsoft Xbox 360 platform.

"Ubisoft have confirmed no such thing. Assassin's Creed will come on PS3 and at this time, no other platform has been confirmed."

The rumors first appeared on a website called, "Club Skill", which has also posted an update restating Ubisoft's company line that the game has not yet been confirmed for any platform other than the PS3. Which of course makes us wonder why they even posted the news in the first place; if their source was a good one, you'd think they'd stick by their story regardless of the company line.

We still think the game will eventually make it to other platforms, but for now we have to wait on Ubisoft's official word.

If there's news, we'll post it. If it's rumours, we won't.

Remember this is a poll of opinion. Only 37 % thinks Sony will come in first. With all of Sony's brand power I would expect it to be higher. Looks like support from gamers is slipping away. That means 63 % think Sony will fail in comparisson to the ps2's great success. Its about right on par with Japans Polls. 70 % of gamers in Japan thinks that sony's ps3 price point is too high. Remember all polls are just a glimpse of the world. They can be off...up or down a few percentage points. But its still clear Sony is in trouble this time around.

Yet Sony is taking a huge gamble with launching their next-gen console with a next-gen disk format only a few months after Blu-Ray itself was introduced to the public. They recommended that people stay away from Blu-Ray until all of the bugs and kinks in the format have been ironed out. One has to wonder if such problems might affect the PS3 when it launches this November.

When the PS2 was launched, Sony promised the moon when it came to the console’s online features. It was supposed to be able to download movies and music, access the Internet and in short be more than just a game machine but rather a full entertainment system. They showed pictures of the PS2 with a PC style monitor, keyboard and mouse and touted the deals with AOL, Netscape and others to bring the Internet to gamers.

It’s now 2006 and many of those previous claims for the PS2 never came out. No Internet email or browser access. No music or movie downloads. As far as the online gaming experience, Sony decided to have an open door policy. There was no central PS2 online network but rather Sony gave third party game publishers the way to support the online features of the PS2 on their own. While the online support for the console was free, you did have to pay for a $50 online network adapter to connect to the Internet and online games. The end result was overall a disappointment.

Sony has plans for its own online network for the PS3 console that on the surface sound a lot like what Microsoft has done for Xbox Live. Like the PS2 it will be free to use but Sony has yet to give a lot of details about the service itself, including pricing for things like add-ons for games and downloadable titles similar to Xbox Live Arcade. At E3 Sony execs were once again claiming that the PS3 is more than just a game machine. Unlike Microsoft Sony doesn’t seem to have learned that it’s not good to promise what you can’t deliver. Sony tried and failed with a similar plan for a iTunes music download service and until more details are learned about the PS3’s online plans it pays to be skeptical about what Sony might bring to the table

The Playstation 3 will lose money for at least a few years. How much and for how long is key, and recent projections from Merrill Lynch Japan suggest that the PS3 could lose a tremendous amount of money for Sony in the first few years. And considering that Hi-Def adoption is currently at 24% and more than half of consumers are waiting for price drops, the target market for Blu-Ray is not as lucrative as one might believe. Additionally, menus and extra features made DVD content easier to access and gave it more value. Also, DVDs don't degrade in quality over time, making them a better long-term investment. Even then, the question remains: Is Blu-Ray content going to be compelling enough to make me say "I have to have it?"

Recent announcements also suggest that Blu-Ray disc prices will come at a significant premium over existing DVD prices. With broadband adoption growing rapidly, one also has to ask if a physical format has a long life ahead of it. Bill Gates has publicly stated that he thinks the format war is the last we'll see, because hi-def content will be soon be delivered over the Internet instead. Similar criticisms arose with the PS2, and while Sony was able to overcome the same hurdles then, there is one major difference now that may keep history from repeating itself: the Xbox 360.

Since the original Xbox came into the game a good bit later than the PS2, developers had to stick with Sony because it was the clear market leader. This afforded Sony liberties that it may not have had otherwise. Now, Microsoft has the head start. Additionally, the Microsoft unit has already been praised by the likes of John Carmack (creator of Doom, Quake, etc...) for it's great development environment, while Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid fame has expressed some concerns that development for the PS3 could be more difficult than for the Xbox 360. Sony must have strong 3rd party support so that licensing fees will help recoup the costs of putting the PS3 into the market. Just being Sony may not be enough anymore.

While I don't think we'll see Sony close it's doors for good, I have some concerns about the affect the PS3 could have on Sony's financials over the next few years and into the future. Microsoft has created an impressive console with the Xbox 360 and while Sony has a strong history in the Playstation line, there are key components for concern. Blu-Ray, an online service like Xbox Live and a hard development environment create additional areas for financial loss that may not be recouped. For the sake of competition and a strong market, let's hope Sony can address these concerns adequately and while there is still time.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nintendo has stated numerous times that its next generation video game machine will be less expensive than the competition. Now it appears that it might be on store shelves considerably earlier than many were expecting as well.

While Nintendo has not made any formal announcements about the launch date for the Wii, most of the industry has expected the machine to hit retail at approximately the same time as Sony's PlayStation 3 (which is set for November 17). Now, industry observers - and insiders - say they expect the system to be available in October, with late September a dark horse candidate.

Indeed, the company appears to be already manufacturing final retail units of the Wii, according to a June 21st analyst's note from P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research. That would give it a significant head start over Sony (Charts), which has yet to begin final manufacturing of the PlayStation 3. Microsoft's first Xbox 360 did not roll off the assembly line last year until 69 days before the on sale date of Nov. 22. (That late start in production is the root cause behind last holiday's shortages.)

Up until the lanch of the Ps2 I was PUMPED!!! Then I got my hands on it and I was let down...I was expecting so much more because Sony had built it up to be so much more. Sony updated today its retail online store, SonyStyle.com, revealing that their first Blu-ray Disc player for the home, the BDP-S1, has been delayed until October 25, 2006.

Available for pre-order at $999.95, the BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc home player from Sony was originally scheduled for release in July of this year after Sony announced the player won't ship in March. Then in April, Sony updated the product's page with a new release date, pushing the launch of the BDP-S1 back to August. Many expected that this would be the month the Blu-ray Disc player would finally launch after so many delays but today's update has pushed back the BDP-S1 yet again.

Xbox 360 has only been out for 6 months. But yet every month consistantly the 360 has 5 games in the top 15 games sold every month. That includes all systems and platforms including computer games and hand helds. Xbox 360 has 3 million plus sellers and its only been 6 months. They have quite a few 500,000 plus titles that will hit the million mark by the end of the year. Think about that. With an install base of 5 million or so. That tells developers if you make a good game and bring it to the xbox 360 you will get million plus sales. In the gaming industry that is a major success if your game can hit the million mark. The xbox 360 isn't a year old and still has Major game releases coming in the next few months. The smallest install base of all systems but always 5 games in the top 15 sellers each month. Christmas 2006 will be amazing.

When the PS2 was released, it was a big selling point in having a DVD player within the system. But the player was(and still is)equipped with a low grade dvd drive. I never played a single movie within my PS2 because I always had a high grade DVD player. But considering that Sony was offering the PS2 for the same price as the PSOne when it was originally released, I thought, was a justified price.

Fast forward to today, and sure enough history is repeating itself. I have a HDTV, and of course I want to play High-Def movies on it, but not with a low grade HD DVD Player. I'll buy a separte high grade player for that. So what am I left with? A $600 dollar game machine, which is way too expensive.

Ps3 has ONE processor and seven dsp's. Dsp's are not processors. The all use the ONE processor. I'm not saying its horrible but its not best for gaming...but best for hd video streaming.

Blu ray is new and innovative...but its the cheap version of sony's 1000 dollar blu ray player and its SLOW. 2x speed.

Will the average game consumer buy? Only time will tell and I'm sure industry analysts will debate the point to death. But I'll give you my 2 cents worth. At $499 average gamers and families will likely purchase Sony's new system. Microsoft's Xbox 360 retails for $399 and $299 for the Xbox 360 Core system. I can see people spending another $100 for Sony's "newer" system. At $500 or 600, I'm not so sure. You can buy/build a decent computer for that price. Sony can argue all they want that the PS3 is a "home entertainment system", and they're probably right, but parents will still see this as a video game. Sure, many hard core Playstation fans can and will spend their own money on the PS3, but I'm not sure average electronics consumers will pay en masse. Sony's base has a large portion of youth to young to buy PS3 thats fact.

Well Ps3 with a high price point have lost the bulk of their ps2 owners interest. Many will either get a Wii or an xbox 360 which has many of the same games that the ps3 flaunts. And every single month since launch they have had 4 to 5 games in the Top 15 selling games for all platforms. 3 games have broken the million seller list and 7 are over 500,000 sales and creeping up on the million seller list. Thats in 6 months. Thats with around or about 5 million user base. We will see Tomarrow with the total sales released. But with that said.....Ubi soft already has one title in the million seller list. Ubi soft knows that Assasins Creed will easily sell a million plus games on the 360. If Sony don't pay them a hefty amount...its only common sense that they will release it on the xbox 360. All game companies consider 500,000 copies sold and up a major success. Ubisoft Boss: Sony Must Drop PS3 Price in 2007
Guillemot expresses concern about ability to compete with Xbox 360.

July 3, 2006 - In comments made to the Bloomberg financial news service, Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot expressed optimism about the prospects for the next-generation videogame console systems, but tempered this optimism by voicing concern regarding the competitive position of Sony's PlayStation 3.

According to the report, Guillemot stated that while Sony's next-generation offering would see "enormous demand" by the system's early-adopters, he was concerned that the system's pricing would present a significant entry barrier to those wanting to purchase the system after its initial launch.

In order to counteract this potential issue, Gulliemot suggested that Sony drop the price of the PlayStation 3 in 2007 in order to more effectively compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360. Despite Microsoft denials to the contrary, many industry analysts have speculated that the company will drop the price of its next-generation console in order to make it more attractive relative to the PlayStation 3's higher price point.

The notion of a price drop for the PlayStation 3 in 2007 may present a problem for Sony which is rumored to be enduring a fairly significant loss on each console sold largely due to the inclusion of such technologies as the Cell processor and Blu-ray optical drive. It is unclear whether the company will have by 2007 significant enough economies of scope and scale to reduce manufacturing costs in order to make a PlayStation 3 price drop a viable option.

Gulliemot concluded his remarks to Bloomberg by stating that he agreed with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates that 2007 will be a "crucial year" in the next-generation console competition.

June 30, 2006 - Ouch! The Associated Press is reporting that Japanese tax authorities have ordered Sony to pay an estimated 27.9 billion yen ($243 million) in additional taxes.

According to a statement issued by Sony, Japanese tax authorities found fault with tax payments related to profits from PlayStation console sales and profits from transactions relating to CD and DVD business operations between Sony and a number of overseas subsidiaries from 1999 to 2004.

The taxation bureau calculated Sony's income in Japan to be 74.4 billion yen ($647 million) more than the amount it originally reported.

June 30, 2006 - While Sony has easily dominated gaming for two console generations and is confidently preparing for a third, a surprising pricing strategy and vigorous moves from Microsoft and Nintendo have many questioning whether the champion will easily win another round. Adding to the skepticism this week are several reports from industry analysts which point to possible weaknesses in Sony's approach.

During a luncheon at the recent game marketing conference MI6, analyst P.J. McNealy of the American Technology Researchers warned that Sony's PlayStation 3's complexity could prove troublesome.

"This is now the most complex box that's ever been built in this industry. It's going to have a Cell processor; it's going to have a Blu-ray drive. The number of pieces that are going into this box are even more astounding [than the over 1700 parts used in the Xbox 360]," commented McNealy. "While Sony has certain manufacturing advantages at the end of the day, this is a very complex process, and they're going to be limited to the yields that they can come up with."

Sony has set a goal to build six million PS3 units by the end of March 2007 and set a monthly shipping target of one million units per month from launch in November 2006. McNealy also speculated on the production schedule of the complicated next-gen system: "We don't think [Sony] is going to be in assembly for another four to six weeks -- end of July, early August."

Meanwhile, Next-Generation reports that the strategic market research and consulting firm DFC Intelligence sees the PS3 as likely coming in third behind Microsoft and Nintendo in the next-gen console war.

Ge-Maga asked the big question. Why PS3 only? Kataoka took this one. "There is the fact that VF4 had already been released on the PS2, but another big reason is that the Arcade and PS3 GPUs are both from NVIDIA, so the technical barriers are low. Also, VF5 is tuned to the limits of the Arcade capabilities, so multiplatform development would have been difficult."

These two aren't picking on the PS3's competition, though. "I believe that if development is done with multiplatform in mind, there won't be a difference in the abilities of the PS3 and Xbox 360," said Kataoka.

Well, I must say there are some good games out there for the Xbox 360. Say, Oblivion, that game is hecka fun, and there is over 200 hours of game play.....there is also Ghost Recon and such. But another point is, with these next Gen gaming systems, both the xbox 360 and ps3, the games are taking alot more time and money to put together. I think we'd all rather wait for a game where all the little details are polished and ready to go, rather than them rushing, putting together a rough draft and sending it out partialy finished. In the end, the wait will probably be all the more worth it. And if you don't have the patience, i don't blaim you, it is always nice to have more than one cool, new, fun game at a time...but, it is just a simple fact that we are going to have to be patient, no matter what we do, but at least we eventually get our games eh ? :)

Here are the reasons I find valuve in PS3

Well I personally find value in the PS3. Before any of you Sony haters jump on me please read thru my post.

1: I own a Big Screen HDTV 1080p Samsung and can't wait to play games at this resoultion. An added bounus is being able to play movies at this resolution on the Blu ray player.

2: Both PSone and PS2 have gave us great games and have had long life cycles as far as consoles go, and I don't see the PS3 being any different .

3: The main reason why I purchase a game console is for games. Games like Heavenly Sword, DMC4, MGS4, FFXIII, Eight Days, Lair, Tekken 6, VF5, GT5, ect. ect. are all games that either really interest me or games I will buy without thinking twice.

4. Furthmore I am a 360 owner and I can say honestly, that M$ has stolen my 400$. Almost a year into the system Lifecycle and not one "killer" game has surfaced yet. What burns me up even more is the current "dry-spell" of games that is going on now. This summer has seen nothing worth talking about come to 360. Moto GP is sub-par and very boring, and don't any of you even get me started on Over G fighters (could possibly be the WORST GAME EVER MADE). I couldn't be more angry at M$ for this, I paid my money at launch for NEXT-GEN now!!! not to be forced to wait till Wii and PS3 ( I will be getting both and trading my 360 in for games) drop to be playing anything worth my 60$.

600$ is steep but in my eyes it's well worth the price of addmission if you can afford it, or at least save up for it, why not give it a try? That's just my opinion

No 1080p tv's out right now actually accept a 1080 p signal. read your manual dude. They upscale to 1080p. True 1080p tv's that accept the signal in its true form won't be available till the beginning of 2007. And thats the Truth. I will post the link that states that if you need to be shown to be the liar you were prior before you changed your name. No go back in hiding.

Why do ALL SONY FANS lie so much to make mute points? I will never understand that. No one will ever be happy with everything. But No one believes you have a 360. Because if you did...and you have a 1080p tv...it would look amazing. Your tv uspcales to 1080p. And if IGN PC says that a 4000 dollar cutting edge computer game system looks identical to a 400 dollar console...and thats with a PC port...not an exclusive 360 game...that shows the incredible value right there. SUMMARY
Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.

The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance

The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.

Memory System Bandwidth

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times.

The Xbox 360's CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one.

Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.

The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3's. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.

CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.

What do you think of the PS3's Cell architecture? How much harder is it for developers to write asymmetric multiprocessing code that will run on the PPE and the SPE's? How difficult will it be to port code that is tuned for the Cell over to the 360 while maintaining good performance? Do you think Sony made the architecture complex deliberately to make porting that way harder, or were they just trying to get maximum performance out of their system?

I don't think the Cell is as well designed for game development as Sony would have you believe. Some aspects of the SPEs, such as the lack of branch prediction, make them particularly unsuited to running most game code, which contains a lot of branches. They appear to be designed more for serialized streaming math code, more common in video codecs and audio processing, the traditional domain of digital signal processing chips. The memory architecture of the SPEs, specifically their lack of automatic cache coherency in favor of DMA transactions, seems like a lot of overhead is needed to feed work units to the SPEs and copy the results back to system memory.

The PPE appears to be essentially identical to one of the Xbox 360 cores, except without the VMX128 enhancements and with half the cache. However, a much greater assortment of work has to be crammed into this single core—all of the game loop, all of the rendering commands, and the system allegedly takes over some time as well. Only the second and third cores on Xbox 360 use a small timeslice to provide cool stuff like the Guide, music playback, Dolby Digital encoding, and more things that we can add in the future to all games, past and present.

I think porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be reasonably difficult, since the Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another. And the content might suffer as well, since you'll never see a PS3 title with more than 256MB of textures at any given time, due to the split graphics and system memory banks. When we announced 512MB of unified memory on Xbox 360, I think all of our game developers (and the artists too) did a little happy dance. It's easier to use and gives developers much more flexibility in how they allocate memory for various resources.

In terms of performance, I think that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will essentially be a wash. We ran the numbers a while back and the two systems come up surprisingly close in theoretical peak performance, despite the one year difference in release dates. However, I know for a fact that we have a great advantage in software and services—our development environment and tools are years ahead of the competition, and this will ensure that Xbox 360 game developers can easily realize all of this performance and make superior games. Xbox 360 is a great system to develop on, a real pleasure—and I know that every developer agrees.

First I would have to believe you have a 360....and I don't...

But I actually love Over G Fighers. Is it for everyone...uh, NO. But thats why you rent it first. lol....And Microsoft didn't make that game dude. That was Ubi Soft. The same company that makes Assasins Creed.

Over G is what it is. Yeah its getting bashed in the reviews. But I think its because people go into it expecting something else. Which is fine. I'm just glad that they are making a variety of games for the 360. But I love the game. And obviously a lot of others do too because when I play on xbox live there are always many many sessions to join with people playing. And in all the reviews they all agree thats where the fun is to be had in Over G....Online dog fights...But there will always be a game on any platform that some people won't like. Believe it or not there are actually people on earth who don't like Halo. lol.....Its just the way life is. Every game can't appeal to everyone. I'm just glad that we have many choices. And come Christmas we will have 160 choices in games. I am toooooo excited.

But once again...No one believes you about you owning an xbox 360....You just read the review that just got posted on IGN today and thought you would bash it like they did...lol...Nice try LIAR.

One more thing. I don't have a 1080 p tv. I have the money to get one but there are NO 1080 P tv's that accept a 1080 p input signal. Its a fact. lol...if you are too lazy or slow to look it up in your tv manuel...give me your tv model number and I will show you via online link...then you can see with your own eyes that you can't recieve a 1080 p signal. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment has defended itself against accusations of racism over a controversial advert for the new 'Ceramic white' PSP.

All devkit and hardware analists know that the PS CPU is slightly more powerfull in RAW power, but when you have to let it work for games, it has less overall power output then the 360 GPU.

So it's what you like. Raw power gives nice spec's on technical sheets. Real power like the 360 gives you better performance in games. And even compared on paper it's just SLIGHTLY better.

Then the GPU. You can't defend the PSZero's GPU. It's just less advanced then the 360 one.

360's GPU has got 48 pixel/shader pipelines. PSZero's GPU has less

360's GPU can arrange up to max. 512 MB memory, PSZero's GPU is fixed on 256 MB

360's GPU has 10 MB embedded superfast Ram, it's databus is higher on output then the normal Ram and the PSZero's total ram.

The only thing PSZero's GPU is better on is a slightly higher Mhz tweak. Yet again, it looks strong on technical sheets, but in real time the 360 GPU looks better.

CPU and GPU on paper nice spec's that's Sony's strategy. Like the PS2 would be a supercomputer 10 times more powerfull then a high end PC. And it would have an emotion engine which would be capable of blablabla. You'll see? It's Sony doing it over and over again. Ofcourse there would be devkit users that prefer PS because they have games in line up for the PS and would like to please Sony and earn some money.
