Analyst: Wii and Wii HD Will Be Similar to PS2/PS3

EndSights:

How, if Nintendo intends to do this, would they market this new high-definition device? Would they phase out the current Wii system, or treat the upgrade much in the same vein as the DS, DS Lite and DSi? Neither, Pachter told us - look at the Wii and Wii HD as the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3.

If they do this I might just buy a Wii to play a few games. As it is right now the Wii does not look very good on a 40" lcd.

Maddens Raiders3831d ago

& why not...follow in the footsteps of the best software and hardware coupling the world has ever seen? Makes sense to me; Nintendo and Sony are indelibly linked forever.

jessupj3830d ago

Am I the only one that sees all these non-gamer wii owners are not going to care about some wii HD. The majority of wii only owners are not gamers. They don't care about the games they play, they don't follow the news or read up on future games they might like. And they are certainly not going to care about a $300 wii HD. They'll just pass it on as a wii with better graphics instead of educating themselves.

Do you really think a non gamer is going to spend a whole 200-300 just for better graphics? Do you think mommy and daddy are going to get a brand new console that basically does the same thing as their current wii. (of course the wii HD will mostly likely have more features and some good first party exclusives, but mommy and daddy will mostly likely arrogantly come to the other conclusion).

And what about all those people that bought a wii thinking it was going to be awesome because everyone else is buying it just to have it collect dust after a few weeks. Do you think they are going to get a wii HD?

The answer is for the majority..... no.

The wii HD will probably have healthy sales, but no where near the success of the wii for the reasons I mentioned above.

"Am I the only one that sees all these non-gamer wii owners are not going to care about some wii HD. The majority of wii only owners are not gamers. You're right, some wii owners don't play HD consoles because they prefer the motion games. But a lot of us are PC gamers that miss old school console gameplay. Even the motion control gamers care about the games - they just don't care about the games you play. Why do you think they like wii sports resort and not Madden? They prioritize the controls and gameplay, not the graphics.

For you to suggest that they're ignorant and need to "educate" themselves about graphics is ridiculous. My GF loves our wii. She also loves SimCity, Civilization, and The Sims. Civ and SimCity are gamer's games. But she rightly thinks that playing tennis, golf, or a shooter without the wiimote is a joke. It's nothing like the activity you're emulating. And while you may judge a game as more realistic for looking better, nothing is going to convince you that you're playing golf or tennis if you're sitting there mashing buttons.

A lot of us wii gamers are actually PC gamers who get all those big 360/PS3 games on our computers. The wii is our fix for those old school console games that everyone but Nintendo stopped producing. This is a sizable population of wii users. And yet your tone is condescending, like we're somehow less devoted than you. I've been gaming since NES, seen 3dO, NeoGeo, and Atari Jaguar die, watched Sega become a publisher, and you're completely dismissing Nintendo despite the fact they're the only company from that era still around? Here's my perspective and what Nintendo realized when they made the wii.

I have a quad-core athlon phenom with 2gb ddr1066 RAM and Radeon 4870 graphics card. The Radeon 4870 has 1gb vram, dual-GPUs on the same card, and can be linked to another using crossfire (which I intend to do when the price drops). That graphics card alone costs more than a PS3. I run my games on a Western Digital Raptor 10000RPM server class hard drive to avoid slow loading times. My system is overclocked. I have a widescreen 24'' HD Dell monitor. Graphics seem to be your thing, so let's educate you a little about what my PC can do compared to your HD consoles. Like you said, I don't expect a non-gamer to drop over a thousand on such a setup. But I have a B.S. in comp sci and I think it'd be good for you to learn about technical limitations and our perspective on graphics.

Halo 3 runs natively at 640p. It's upscaled afterwards to 720p, so you're only seeing a 640p image blown up. Halo 3 also lacks antialiasing - their use of 64-bit lighting required the use of two frame buffers as each frame buffer is only 32 bits. They stored the low values for lighting in one and the high values for lighting in the other, then combine the two 32 bit frame buffers for 64 bit lighting. This filled up the entire 10mb of RAM allocated to the frame buffer in the GPU - which normally handles anti-aliasing - and prevented them from using anti-aliasing at all. In addition, Halo 3 runs at 30 frames per second. I'm sure the mere 512mb of xbox360 ram isn't helping.

For comparison, my computer is capable of running a FPS from the same era as Halo 3 in better than 1080p, with 8x anti-aliasing and more than 30 frames per second. And I can trade a little bit of that visual quality to hit 60-70 frames per second, which is the sweet spot for FPS gaming and essential to most serious PC gamers.

Even worse is that Halo 3 has aim assist. It sticks the cursor on enemies when you scroll over them to keep you from moving past. Dual analog is very imprecise compared to keyboard and mouse and aim assist is necessary in most console FPS games to make them playable. No such issue exists with a keyboard and mouse. In professional gaming tournaments where both can be used, keyboard and mouse are unanimously chosen for their increased sensitivity and accuracy.

With your newfound education, can you tell me why I'd buy a PS3 or xbox 360? Halo 3 has no anti-aliasing and doesn't even natively run in baby HD. My computer can run comparable FPS games at better than 1080p with 8x anti-aliasing and still beat the Halo 3 frame rate of 30fps. What am I missing really? Please, educate me.

It's the same with titles like Oblivion. It runs natively on 360 at 720p, or 1280x720. This is a joke resolution for PC games. I can run it in 1080p with better frame rate and quicker load time (thank the 2gb of RAM and my server class hard drive). In addition, while this title has anti-aliasing on 360, I have 8x anti-aliasing. The graphics can't compare. If I get sick of my 24'' monitor my 40'' 1080p HDTV has a VGA hookup so I can directly connect my computer to it.

The reason I can't apply this argument to the wii is because it has a control scheme my PC can't emulate. And Nintendo makes old school console games for it that don't exist for computers. But with your newfound education, why would I ever touch either HD console? It'd be a massive downgrade from what I'm used to in every way.

So really, please spare us the argument that wii users aren't real gamers because we don't care about graphics. It's condescending, patronizing and amazingly ignorant. Because lot of us are used to graphics that blow your HD consoles away, but we still appreciate an innovative game with excellent controls. Unlike those gimped PC consoles the wii delivers them in spades.

oobob has a strong point and

@jessupj
you are only one of many older gamers that believe they are hardcore because the media tells them what is hardcore. You sees all these non-gamer wii owners when the wii only does games period.

True they may not care about the Wii in HD but they will care about better art and the option to run games in HD or not as long as the motion controls are better. Yet we all know nintendo is not just going to stop at juct HD graphics.

I don't like getting into the HD resolution argument but I knew many where cheating which is why I'm tired of every one using the HD argument. Try using directx 9 ready gaming which means better effects. I mean none of you guys do your home work you just get feed what the media and the HD guys tell you then you are left waiting for a new game because well the one they hyped was only worth playing one or two times because it wasn't really that fun. It looks nice but it just did not get things right.

Another thing is Nintendo will not make people choose... they would have a choice upgrade to the new console or just buy the older one if you only want some of the older games. The DS and game boy are an example of this. The people that just want Wii sports and VC games and the Wii mote will still buy the Wii but we all know nintendo by now right? Really they are into making the unseen seen now... that is way out there LOL.

"The majority of wii only owners are not gamers." you mean fanboys right? They only care about the games they want to play. They don't buy into this idea that the reviewers know what they like because for so long they didn't. The gaming media is out of touch.

"they don't follow the news or read up on future games they might like." Well I don't know about that. They bought 500,000 motion plus ad on with out the game. They also where responsible for wii sell out and the wii balance board sell out. They also gave red steel a try and bought mario kart wii like it was GT LOL along with brawl.

These are the same gamers that are getting a dsi for an extra $60 almost. What is funny is that system is actually more powerful so people are actually going to get a surprise once people tap into to that.

The sad thing is I know more high end car driving Wii owners than HD console owners. They don't care about the price they all have gaming PCs any way that cost the price of a HD console [laptop] and 4 times the price workstation/gaming setup. They buy what they want not what they can afford. Countless releases show that the HD gamers just can not support the HD console by them selves which is why SONY and MS needs this wii gamers yet they are going about it all wrong.

"Do you really think a non gamer is going to spend a whole 200-300 just for better graphics?" Do you think a HD console owner can afford real PC graphics? Maybe but they are that cheap and you know it. On top of this Nintendo has made a product that did not exclude the people they could only afford a PS2 right now... Those guys are going to get a Wii after this year simply looking at the line up. Then you have the high end gamer also that loves the Wii because guess what he love better control and already is over normal maps, now he wants real games again.

Look at this MW2 is getting a price "upgrade" LOL you guys are getting ready to boycott it LOL. Wii fit sells for $96 last time I say it on sale during my vacation. at normal retail it sold for around $80 and it actually out sold the PS3 LOL. There was no complaining online either people actually came back to stores and waiting on the thing. I have to wonder who is hardcore here? Some one how is craving a game or some one who buys what all the cool magazines tell them to buy, yet complains when a game cost too much. Hell Neo geo games cost $200 LOL no one complained if you wanted it you bought it. Just like the PS3 it cost too much....

"Do you think mommy and daddy are going to get a brand new console that basically does the same thing as their current wii. (of course the wii HD will mostly likely have more features and some good first party exclusives, but mommy and daddy will mostly likely arrogantly come to the other conclusion)."

Mommy and daddy may actually just give the old wii to their kids now and put another on in the living room so they can brag to their friends that they have the new wii and ohhh look at the art! it looks so much better on our new LED HDtv. Seriously only mom and dads will be getting one of those not many pre teens. Another thing is the Wii units the living room. It is going to be way easier for some of you chain and ballers to get that nice new HDtv upgrade because the interior family can enjoy it.

"And what about all those people that bought a wii thinking it was going to be awesome because everyone else is buying it just to have it collect dust after a few weeks. Do you think they are going to get a wii HD?" If they don't then WTF are they all complaining about? Isn't that the reason why it collects dust it is not good enough for them yet right? They will march right over to gamestop and trade the thing in for $75 LOL and put the money up for a new Wii. Then they will join the port battles LOL.

Seriously though I don't think nintendo is going to take the bait yet. All they would have to do is call up ATI and talk to them about direct x 11 spec and what it can do. Siggraph is this august in MI and the larrabee will be their also. If nintendo is thinking about using it then that will be the best place to learn what it can do since they will be showing programmers how to use it. I wonder if ati and intel could work together though?

Another thing is ATI is not afraid can we expect ATI to be on board for the next nintendo console? You know they are showing off reels or mock ups of the next wii yet no one can talk about what is seen if they like their salary!I have to say ATI is the best partner you can have right now. I mean the AMD is still great at making chips and console don't always need super high end stuff just look at the power pc chips LOL. Another thing is the Wii pretty much is a SOC (system on chip) design already. You just shrink it and add more dies and use a ring bus for memory instead of SPU you have a few hollywoods or just put a terrascale engine in there and call it a day.

Next gen is going to be fun but it won't be what we think it is going to be.

Oh yeah that 3rd pillar was suppose to be the new gameboy design. That was canceled because people want the dsi obviously.

would make sense if they did that since iwata would talk about the 3 pillars he did go on to say the ds and the wii were 2 pillars

na-no-nai3832d ago

hmm i dont know. think about the price it might be. of course they gonna go to hd sometime soon anyways. but who knows.

ZOMBIEMAN13831d ago
