TeamXbox: Will Microsoft Release a Blu-ray Player for Xbox 360?

TeamXbox writes: "It feels like this happened long ago, in a galaxy far far away, but it was until last year that Sony and Toshiba were fighting in a war to impose their own formats to store high-definition movies in optical discs. Unlike the VHS vs. Betamax battle, this time Sony won the battle and Blu-ray Disc emerged as the sole standard for next-generation optical discs. "

don't bother

Blu-ray is TEH FAILZ

:)

IdleLeeSiuLung5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

a) they have instant 1080p? That would just undermine their service.

b) blu-ray stand-alone player is reaching the $100 mark now? There is no profit.

c) considering the price relative to stand-alone, why would anyone want another accessory attached to the 360?

d) blu-ray on the 360 right now could only be used for movies and not games....

Why even bother asking in the first place!

meepmoopmeep5384d ago

yeah, MS has their instant play movie thingy so they don't really need a blu-ray player

but then again, there is a market for blu-ray owners who want to play their discs.
i wonder if MS will alienate them for the next xbox though since consoles are trying to be the main entertainment hub

NOOBKILLA5384d ago

a. I have both a 360 and a PS3. The quality to a "HD" movie on the 360 doesn't even come close to the video and sound quality that blu ray provides. 360 movies are 720p an upscaled.

b. The blu-ray players that are close to $100 doesn't even have an ethernet port on it. (ie. no firmware updates)

c. It would take even more sales away from the PS3. Some people buy the PS3 just because it has a blu ray player in it.

d. I agree with you on that one.

It appears only fanboys that wouldn't be able to afford a blu ray player for their 360 are the ones that don't want one for it. Why wouldn’t you?? I mean just think they had a 360/natal/blu ray bundle next year for $299. Sony would be in real trouble.

Just my opinion fanboys. Get a job so you get afford more than one system and/or a blu ray player!

hulk_bash19875384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

I think that the facts available about the format already establish why Blu-ray is far from being "Fail".

But a 360 blu-ray attachment is highly unlikely and unnecessary. Because of the above mentioned availability of already existing stand alone players.

Syronicus5384d ago

If MS were to release a BD player add-on much like their earlier HD-DVD add-on, they would have to make it competitive with the current stand alone players and as we all know, making peripherals inexpensive is not Microsoft's strong point...

No, we will not be seeing a BD add-on.

Mr.Mister5384d ago

they could support the hd dvd it can play game 3 game were release for it
and it would give developer more space

Arthur_5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

b/c no one would buy it. between 1080p Streams, NetflixHD, and being able to Stream BR-Rips and other HD content thru Windows Media extender or Tveristy----why would they?

And if you read the article, they explain at the end, that "no" is the answer to the question(the question that they asked to begin with meaning they answered their own question).

this article = failsville.

Veneno5384d ago

What about the people that want to build a collection of movies? Build a stream library?

Arthur_5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

lol. I suppose you could call it that. Netflix calls it a "que".

JBaby3435384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

Xbox360 owners have been adamant from the beginning about not wanting Blu-ray and consoles being game machines not movie players.

Xbox Avatars Shoe5384d ago

So I'm set :) Blu-Ray is amazing! Instant 1080p is still gonna have some unwanted artifacts in it cus it's a stream. I wonder if it will have the same issues as Netflix where it detects your internet quality or distance or whatever and degrades the picture/sound. I have 12mb/s internet but Netflix streaming on my TiVo HD and 360 has a tinny high pitch sound like everyone is breathing in helium! It makes Netflix streaming useless cus I don't want to listen to chipmunks while I watch "The Fugitive".

For some reason my internet goes out during rain and snow storms and I'd hate to be watching a movie and then it rains and it's ruined. When I put in that Blu-Ray there's no worries.

Time will tell if the streaming instant 1080p looks as good as a pre-existing 1080p source such as Blu-Ray.

IdleLeeSiuLung5384d ago

a) well, instant 1080p is suppose to bridge that gap albeit it will probably still have lower PQ than BR. From what I have seen though, this new streaming technology works really well and miles better than what I have seen so far.

b) well, you are talking about the lowest priced blu-ray players, but by the time a new BR player from MS arrives, a quality one probably could be had for around $100. I would rather have a stand-alone player than having it chained to my 360.

c) maybe, but the PS3 cost more. A 360 + a standalone BR player => a PS3 in cost with similar (not equivalent) benefits.

Some people might like a BR accessory, but there is hardly a large enough market for it considering the alternatives.

JD_Shadow5384d ago

360 fanboys that have said "we don't want it" would change their tune if they had the option to have one (which they do now, it's just on that...OTHER system that they want to think they are beating).

Willio5384d ago

"From what I have seen though, this new streaming technology works really well and miles better than what I have seen so far."

What and where did you exactly see this "streaming tech?" I just dont see how a consumer at home can stream hundreds of megabytes to watch a movie in HD. The tech you seen was prolli fully streamed already before showing it to the masses.

likedamaster5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

You are wrong and highly misinformed. Not all bluray movies are native 1080p. I repeat, NOT ALL BLURAY MOVIES ARE NATIVE 1080p, many are 1080i/720p native and then upscaled. Look at the back of your bluray movies, most say the native resolution. Ghostbusters for example could never be 1080p native because it was never recorded on a High Def camera. You can claim 7.1 and high bitrate, etc. but visually it's the same. Seriously, I watch blurays and then watch HD-HBO boxing and my experience is exactly the same for both. Now... from DVD to Bluray, there is a difference.

on topic/
Bluray exceptional? Yes. Add-on necessary for xbox 360? No.

IdleLeeSiuLung5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

MS had a link somewhere (I don't remember) showing silverlight technology streaming HD video with stats directly to your PC. It is all but confirmed that this is the same stuff powering the 360.

From what I saw it is works extremely well at adapting bitrate to adjust for bandwidth in real time.

NOOBKILLA5384d ago

If I’m not mistaken, I don't think i said "all" blu-rays are native 1080p. I said streamed movies on my 360 which I have, don't hold a candle to my blu ray movies, which I also have.

Also, using an example like Ghostbusters that came out in 1984 isn't a good example when comparing streamed 360 movies to blu ray. You should be comparing any Pixar movie, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, Knowing, Band of Brothers, Transformers, etc to determine a difference. The streamed movies from 360 aren't even close to blu ray pitcher quality and don't even make me talk about the sound difference!! However it all depends on your TV. You must have a high refresh rate and contrast ratio on you 1080p TV to really get the most out of your blu ray player.

DeadlyFire5383d ago

Never will they do such a thing. Instead they will support HVD in their next console. A format that can play Blu-Ray discs.

KingKionic 5384d ago

I doubt Microsoft would release one .

Veneno5384d ago

They would lose too much face.

It's funny that xboxers put down blu-ray and rally behind digital streaming, yet their personal movie and game collections are all optical media.

Kushan5384d ago

Microsoft doesn't care about loosing face, they care about making money. They're not going to make ANY money on any blu-ray disks sold, so why should they care?
On the other hand, they've been doing a lot of deals with movie studios for downloadable films, which they'll make money from every purchase of. That's the real reason MS wont release a Blu-ray player for the 360.

And note that I'm not saying which is better.

Godmars2905384d ago

When they're talking up DL movies?

Hoping that people who ant to watch said movie more than twice in a month is going to rent it twice, instead of just buying it.

KingKionic 5384d ago

Yeah.

I think when they announced there streaming zune video thats where they said we are not doing it.

Gamer_Politics5384d ago

i hope not...360 doesnt need that feature

PotNoodle5384d ago

Microsoft said, if the consumers demanded it - they would provide. They were never against blu-ray, they pretty much only supported HD-DVD to try and take down the PS3.

But yeah, it could happen - but unless there is enough demand for it, it won't.

ukilnme5384d ago

According to the article, the demand is rising as sales are up but MS response does not give any indication that they will be supporting bluray any time soon.

Bnet3435384d ago

Well consumers aren't demanding it. If you go to the Xbox forums, no one is crying for a blu-ray player. It's a gaming console, not a movie player.

The Wood5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

for a level headed guy thats a silly comment. So just because people on an xbox forum aren't asking for it in droves it means people dont want it!?? Were you guys asking for avatars instead maybe?? Were they still asking for HD DVD addons?? Anyway MS are damned if they do and damned if they dont when it comes to this. MS IS trying to be a multimedia hub whether the hardcore fans realise this or not. Blu ray is the HD now and the HD format for the foreseeable future. MS and Sony work together in many instances. This whole us vs them stuff is just for the fanboys. If its viable for both parties BELIEVE it will happen, if not then it wont...Simplez

Nineball2112

no no no, that doesnt count because 'they didnt ask for it on the forums' ;)

Nineball21125384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

Kigmal... that's all well and good. But if it's (in your words)"a gaming console, not a movie player", then why in the hell does it have Netflix streaming and their own video store?

*sigh* SMH

It sure seems to me that MS would like it to be more than just "a gaming console".

Roper3165384d ago

@ kigmal

Then please explain the now defunct HD-DVD add on that is now garbage that MS released and why they are so strongly pushing netflix?

Arthur_5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

...maybe what kigmal meant to say is its a GAMING CONSOLE FIRST, AND A MOVIE PLAYER SECOND.

What attracted 360 owners was the games and XBL. But yes, MS has thrown in some "bells and whistles" b/c they want to be able to deliver more than just games. Its called "being competitive", or something like that, lol.

Bnet3435384d ago

What Arthur said. I should of rephrased what I said. My bad.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC2h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer4h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey6023h ago(Edited 3h ago)

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya1h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde1h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

Used to love this one, but X-Men Legends 1 and 2 will always be my favorites, especially Rise of Apocalypse. Would pay some good money to play it today with online multiplayer, back then I had no way to get a modem

RavenWolfx1h ago

Yeah, I loved the Legends games so much.

ZeekQuattro8h ago

I remember buying them dirt cheap on the PS4 and then a few days later I read they were delisted. I was wondering why the bundle was price so low and got my answer when that happened.

Knightofelemia7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Sad to say this is one game franchise next to the Xmen that needs a sequel. I use to play the hell out of Xmen Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Was great when my cousin had the OG Xbox play with four other people and then playing online. Great games glad to see it reappear even though I own the discs love the mechanics of this game.

Terry_B6h ago

It got a sequel..but for dumbass #reasons as a switch exclusive.

shinoff21836h ago

It looked so horrible to. They should've kept it similar to the first two.

Asplundh6h ago

Because Nintendo funded it, they did the same for Bayonetta.

Knightofelemia6h ago

I totally forgot about the Switch sequel.

jukins6h ago

Misleading. This page is whats available for people who owned the game prior to delisting.

Abnor_Mal5h ago

The first game was the best imo.
